Its happening, and the kind of damage controlling needed is simply not possible from our local lemmings. This system was garbage from the second it was announced, and now that devs are creating games for current gen in mind, its becoming impossible to developed for that doorstep. The Series S, from day one, was nothing else but a fool's trap. A system created for people that don't know what they want, and simply buy it because it says "new" on the box. THIS SYSTEM IS HOLDING THE CURRENT GENERATION back, and developers are pissed!

Studios Asking Xbox To Drop Xbox Series S Requirement, Dev Says; System Has Become "Albatross"

"Many developers have been sitting in meetings for the past year desperately trying to get Series S launch requirements dropped."

A game developer has claimed that "many" studios are trying to drop a requirement that their games have to launch on the Xbox Series S.

As reported by VGC, VFX artist Ian Maclure responded to a post from Jeff Gerstmann, formerly of Giant Bomb, who said he believes the "'Series S is holding back next-gen games' argument seems really broken to me." Maclure, who worked on Xbox Series X|S title I Am Fish, responded to this to explain that a number of developers actually do want the Series S requirement dropped.

"It might sound broken, but the reason you are hearing it a lot right now is because MANY [sic] developers have been sitting in meetings for the past year desperately trying to get Series S launch requirements dropped," wrote Maclure.

"Studios have been through one development cycle where Series S turned out to be an albatross around the neck of production, and now that games are firmly being developed with new consoles in mind, teams do not want to repeat the process," added Maclure, whose account is now private at the time of writing.

The Xbox Series S was designed as a more cost-efficient console, costing only $300, a whole $200 less than the Series X, which currently sits at $500. This does come at a couple of costs though, as the console targets 1440p resolution rather than the native 4K on the Series X. There's also no disc drive, meaning players will only be able to play games digitally, which is obviously where Game Pass comes into the equation.

Gotham Knights was recently confirmed to run at a maximum of 30fps, which Rocksteady senior character technical artist Lee Devonald seemed to suggest was in part due to the fact the game was releasing on the Series S.

Microsoft is holding gaming back, and that is not OKAY. Its time to stop trolling this generation, Microsoft. STOP!

Lol, another one. This must be the fifth one so far. What I wrote in the GS article:

Weaksauce devs, no skill, lazy af to actually build the games and optimize codes. They rather use stronger and stronger gpu instead of putting in some work. They want the gpu itself to do their job, even write the code so they don't have to. They clock in, and collect a pay cheque. Sad sacks. Just a bunch of soft developers. These guys should take a hike. If they don't want to put in the work to make a game for the series S, they don't need to make it for the X either.

Shitty devs suck at making games. If they manage to provide different settings on PC, why is it somehow impossible to use the same feature on the consoles? Hundreds of games manage that just fine, including the current heavyweight champion - 2077.

Nothing like spending $500+ on a system just so games can be designed for something that's barely a step above the One X.

Series S is holding back console gaming while console gaming is holding back PC gaming.

Will someone please develop a game with the RTX 3090's power in mind? Anyone?

No, because pc gaming is irrelevant. The last time they made a game for PC we were in 2007. Hard pill to swallow, i know.

Considering PS5 games are made to run on PS4 hardware, game developers got way bigger problems to be concerned about before thinking about Series S when it's been proven with many good game developers showing Series S can run games at 120fps with great visuals if they put efforts into it.

All these consoles are ill equipped for the next jump in visuals. They launched with AMD GPUs that suck at ray tracing. Also, they top out at 12 TF. So, it is no surprise that developers just don't want to deal with the 4 TF shit box. It is a stupid and unnecessary burden that MS placed on developers.

RT isn't the problem, they can literally just ship those versions without it and it would not be a big deal. Their overall performance is just weak, 10-12 TF was ok when they released, but it is now 2022. Consoles should probably lean away from off the shelf parts.

So far S versions have been good and the system has been selling. So I don't give much credit to this.

Developers obviously would rather have 4090s as minimum specs but oh well they'll have to work within limitations and be good at their job.

From time to time Sony fanboys find these "concerned" developers and every single time end up with egg on their face.

Edit: Having said that, it is a shame the GPU isn't just a bit more powerful.

Xbox Series S... The S stands for SUCKA! LOL! Imagine shelling out 250 bucks to play some potato mode Starfield then getting left holding the bag for the rest of the gen. This is great 🤣🤣🤣

Series S is good because of the affordable price. It’s selling much better than the X in Japan due to how compact it is.

I am proud of Microsoft for placing the burden on developers to optimise their code for consumer hardware, rather than placing the burden on consumers to spend money on expensive hardware to compensate for crappy coding from developers. Love your work Microsoft! Keep up the good fight!

WTF are you talking about?

Spiderman 2, Final Fantasy 16, Resident Evil 4 remake aren't games being designed around PS4 hardware genius. Stop deflecting with utter nonsense arguments like this.

Oof....

From Gaf:

Apparently the "MANY" devs are actually the one guy in the OP who is not a dev, but a really crummy VFX artist that specializes in mobile games for iOS and Android and has nothing to do with optimizing games. He has also deleted his BS tweets.

Sounds like the reasonable solution is to target PS5/PC only. The series consoles are going to be in last place anyway. No big loss.

What it says in one of the article you provided:

As of today, the first-person shooter “Metro Exodus” is also available for the new generation of consoles. You can now enjoy the game in 4K, 60fps and active ray tracing. PS5 players can also enjoy DualSense features.

How exactly responsible development studio 4A Games has benefited from the new console’s hardware, they recently announced at a press conference.

Less restrictions on development

Developers seem to be impressed with the high performance of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. The studio’s chief display programmer especially praised AMD’s Zen 2 CPU. He sees a significant increase in this compared to the last generation consoles.

“I’m a rendering programmer and we’ve found that the previous generation was more limited in using CPUs. We’ve often been more connected to the CPU and don’t think that’s an issue with this generation. It’s definitely a huge improvement over the previous generation,” explains the experienced developer.

He adds that a powerful CPU affects many areas of development at the same time. This can be used to improve opposing AI in pure new generation titles, for example.

Last summer, the developers at 4A Games talked about the technical advantages of the PS5. They highlighted the SSD speed and ray tracing function, which will play an essential role in the future. Shortly thereafter, they called this technology a “generation leap.”

In the future, you can expect a multiplayer offshoot of the “Metro” series and a brand new trilogy from 4A Games.

Oof....

From Gaf:

Apparently the "MANY" devs are actually the one guy in the OP who is not a dev, but a really crummy VFX artist that specializes in mobile games for iOS and Android and has nothing to do with optimizing games. He has also deleted his BS tweets.

His resume and Portfolio

Edward850, a verified Engineer at Night Dive Studios (System Shock Remake), has a very different take on the Series S than the clown in the OP.

I mean we could go all the way back 2020 when ID tech engineer showed their concerns.

53 Xbox Series S games running at 120FPS as of April. Next gen and previous gen games.

https://www.windowscentral.com/list-xbox-series-x-and-s-games-120-fps-support

Yeah dont randomly copy paste stuff on the net. Actually read. Devs there just making PR remarks on all consoles.

Yup, I read them all and their praises. Did you want to try again? And what you quoted supports when many other developers have been saying about the Series S. A great console to develop for.

Now, don't randomly get all excited on your keyboard next time before you post, you won't look as clueless.

Complaining about using PR when the OP is based upon PR. Negative PR is okay to use I guess. :P
