So in the spirit of all this RPG babble, I was curious what system wars thought on this subject. I am kind of torn, actually because I like Square and BioWare games (FFX and KOTOR are two of my fav RPGs/Games of all time). So what do you guys prefer. To be honest, Im beginning to shy away from the emo-ness of the JRPGs, but I am still excited for FF13.

P.S. for those of you who dont know, WRPG is western RPG, and JRPG is Japanese rpg.

Ahh the age old battle.

By no means are WRPGS bad. I mean I love mass effect, KOTOR, Fallout 3.

But I do enjoy JRPGS more. Just somethin about em.

But either way each style of RPG has heavey hitters and some loosers.

Both have also supplied amazing games though,

Well I voted for WRPG. Although it was a tight race, I gave the edge to WRPG for their more recent triumphs. Maybe if SE comes out with a new Chrono, I may change my vote.

WRPG/JRPG is such a vacuous designation, it ought to be dealt away with. When you start looking at WRPG v. JRPG games in general, there really isn't anything seperating the two genres. There are turn-based WRPG games, there are action JRPG games, there are WRPG games with little choice, there are JRPG games with lots of choices. Even if you want to claim that more of a given trait is in X genre, that doesn't mean the given trait defines the genre itself. Looking at those things unique to both sides, there isn't anything.

It's so superior that it doesn't take any explanation to back up the hard cold facts.

For me, I've always preferred jRPGs, partly because I loved the adventure aspect in games like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, and turn based battles does add a level of strategy.

Lulz, I think for me the reason I like JRPGS a bit better is because the settings and what not are a littler wackier or more around our time with cooler stuff like FF8. I mean if you look at the WRPGS I listed Mass Effect, Fallout 3 KOTOR, is because I'm not a huge fan of goblets ,trolls and stuff like that.

Even though I like both genres I have to go with WRPG's. When you have games like Planescape, Deus, SS, Kotor, Fallout, Elder Scrolls, Baldur's, Neverwinter, Ultima, Diablo, Vampire, Witcher, Arcanum etc etc. I just can't find enough JRPG games to compete with these beasts.

I look for a lot of deep storytelling in games, and more often than not, JRPGs accomplish this better. I realized this after playing Oblivion. I must've sunk 50-some hours into it, but when I tried to replay it, it just lost all of its charms. It was just felt incredibly contrived and boring. I don't really get that when I'm playing JRPGs. I mean, Chrono Trigger is just as fun as it was years ago, and I'm really hoping that Atlus brings P3P stateside.

JRPGs are a lot more imaginative in general, whereas I feel that too many WRPGs are stuck in the dark fantasy craze brought on by Warcraft. The other thing is, WRPGs are propped up by a lot of sidequests. It's fun for a while, but it lacks storytelling structure.

WRPG's are far superior. JRPG's are becoming a dying breed. As a one time huge fan of JRPG's, it hurts to say it, but it's true.

JRPGs often have more contiguous story lines as the game forces you along a linear path, which is sometimes much nicer than the "do whatever" feel some WRPGs seem to engender.

I will join in the hi5, Shadow Hearts: Covenant was like 2nd best PS2 RPGs last-gen for me, or best if Persona 4 counts as this gen. :o Also for the topic, I like both too much to choose, lately I've been playing a lot more wRPGs, but I enjoy them as much as my plehtora of jRPGs.

Do you own a PC? If you did you would see a lot of variety in WRPG's. They have Vampires The Masquerade: Bloodlines in which you play as one of several vampire clans in modern day California. They have the two Freedom Forces in which you play as a madeup team of super heroes from the 1960's era and in the second one there's a lot of time traveling to Nazi Germany. There's Deus Ex that takes place in a conspiracy laden future full of nano enhancements and a bunch of diferent factions. KOTOR of course, Planescape Torment does take place in the DnD realm but it's a dimension usually not explored where your first companion is just a floating wise cracking skull. Even The Elder Scrolls 3 is has vastly different flora and fauna than it's bland followup. As for stories, there are very few JRPG's I can take seriously as a lot of them seem to aim the stories and characters to the teen demographic. I've never seen a JRPG that explores the gray areas of decision making such as The Witcher, or a JRPG that I can be a total evil bastard like Mass Effect, Kotor or NWN 2. (besides Ogre Battle: TMOTBQ)

i prefer jrpg. wrpg always seem bland and boring to me, its always alot of quest, quest, quest, and maybe some more quest. go to point "A" take this object, and bring it back. or kill X amount of enemies. the story doesnt catch my attention, and the characters doesnt really have a personality. i do happen to like some wrpg, just not the majority of it.

They're different. Better or worse then depends on the individual games. I've much preferred the JRPGs I've played, but that says nothing to the genre itself.

Side quests actually give reason for grinding and in a lot of games you don't necessarily have to do it. Also in Oblivion, the Side quests actually hade better stories attached to them than the main quest.

Really? Oblivion and especially Morrowind had some pretty interesting quests...they usually involved killing things or fetching items, but that's the game. It's all about how you dress it up.

And I don't remember any "kill x enemies" quests in either game.

I prefer WRPGs. I haven't had that much experience with JRPGs, but my mind was made up after playing FFVII for about an hour and absolutely hating the turn-based combat and random battles. The only JRPG I've played that I did love was Dark Chronicle (Dark Cloud 2) after a friend bought it.

I love both, but I feel that WRPG's when done right are better. The JPRG's can be a bit out there in terms of story, setting, and characters making it hard to relate to or understand. Since I live in the United States WRPG's are geared towards my culture making them much easier to understand and relate to, which makes the overall gameing experence better.
