Tech 5 is such a joke. For 80gb of textures it doesnt look near that good, and with having to make such large textures, say goodbye to the mod community. Cryengine 2 still looks better.

X360 owners is gonna suffer greatly if this technology catch on (which I'm guessing it will), whereas PS3 owners will enjoy upto 200GB (if i'm not mistaken) of content in a single disk.

it'll be swap fest if a game comes with 80GB textures.

John Carmack is genius.

This demo is impressive because it isn't about just graphics. It is about efficiency. How he created an engine that is multi-plat friendly and able to save a lot of money by not having to extend development time due to minor issues, while giving artists their freedom.

Now I wish Carmack can just focus on one system and pull out the maximum power of the console instead of focusing on multi-platform. Imagine what he can create if it went for pure power performance instead of efficiency.

Thats actually the point. Hes created a system able to take any exhorbitant amount of texture memory and make it a single unified texture.

This is true. They've create quad-layer, 200GB Blu-Ray discs, but the PS3 can't read them. It maxes out at reading the 50GB variety.

The 200 GB discs can't be read by the PS3. It would require a new optical drive.

Edit: It has nothing to do with compression. The discs have more layers.

thats really good. i dont think we will surpass 50 gigs (with compression) for at least the next 7-10 years.

That wasn't my point. 80GB of information, compressed or not, would take four Blu-ray discs.

Of course compression will shrink that number down quite significantly, yet the Blu-ray's read speed will bottleneck the game leading to HDD streaming being necessary.

Cryengine 2 i think still looks better than Rage in some spots

however Rage is equally impressive imo

R-Dot-Yung

Crytek Engine 2 is way stronger and promise to deliver even on old hardware. No needs for 80 GB's...

PS3 is only capable of reading dual-layer Blu-ray's.

Digital distribution is going to make hard-copy media obsolete in a few years.
