Interesting article:

Is the novelty of Wii wearing off?

It was an exciting launch for sure, but one that Wii critics have claimed is a temporary phase. Opposition to the controller's motion-control concept cite it as a gimmick whose appeal would soon diminish. Are we already seeing this happen in Japan?

The DS was also supposed to be a gimmick that would wear off. On another note, where is this report getting its information? The latest Japanese weekly sales report had the Wii up 5% this week compared to last week. :|

The thread title is misleading.  You make it seem like this is a negative article towards the Wii, but it actually has a positive outlook for the future of the console.

From the bottom of the page: " Wii is not a temporary craze. Industry analysts, retailers and developers alike have backed Wii to have a healthy run in the new-generation console war." So,no. Every console slows down a bit after launch.

And how can that be bad?

The Wii WILL do a "DS" on us. Trust me. :)  BTW I sense PS3FTW coming here to bash the Wii....... just a hunch. :P

I would also like to note that it says that the sales are dropping and it points to an article that is 2 weeks old.  The sales for last week are actually up 22%.

Sales are off because it's the 1st quarter and in almost all cases sales are always less in retail for any product. We  will not know anything until 3rd and 4th quarter's when retail sales pick up. Anyone who understands retail knows this, people who don't quote things that generally don't make any sense.

It's not bad, I bought a Wii and Nintendo has long been one of my favorite game developers, I would love to see them come out on top.  I was just suggesting that the TC change the title of the thread.

My thread title sums up the article's title. I haven't twisted their words... don't shoot the messenger.

If the Wii is considered a novelty, then why hasn't the DS sales slowed down yet?

Seriously, you can't just ignore parts of the article you post.

It clearly states the Wii will have a bright future.

Lol, because I didn't post the entire article, you are upset? That's why I posted the link!

Look at it this way... the website themselves came up with the negative title and negative opening paragraphs. If you went to their home page and saw the link title, you'd have the exact same impression as you express here. Only by clicking on the link can you know more. Same as here.

the wii's sales are up this week in japan from the previous one, but the increase in sales has diminished a bit IIRC. This could still very strong sales in the heat of the Q1 drought.

The touch screen gimmick did wear off. People started buying it for the games, not the touch screen feature.

The novelty of the Wii will wear off as sales go up.

Then the Wii will be the standard.

So when the PS4 or the next Xbox comes along, they will have to follow the way of the Wii in order to compete.

Well, doesn't that stand out.

Almost saying 'PS3 critics have claimed the PS3 is growing stronger in popularity, as 360 owners are throwing out their consoles for their hope of a PS3.'

Wouldn't Nintendo have some kind of patent on that control system? Just wondering.

Why are people jumping on the TC? As the article states, the sales of the Wii & PS3 had dropped for 4 consecutive weeks and I believe they went up again last week. The DS continues to sell like wildfire so I really don't know what the Japanese want...

On the specific technology they use, they surely have a patent.  But there are probably similar technologies that could be developed that would achieve the same effect.

That's true.

Nintendo patented the N64 controller.

But somehow Sony released the Dual Shock controller a year later.

There must be some kind of loophole.

Thank you sir. A voice of reason in the wilderness. You guys who don't like the article need to contact the original writers since they are the ones who put it up.

I agree. The Wii can't just win on it's own. Games have to be there and it has a truckload of potential.

That's logical. As time goes by, novelty will of course wear off. Just like the novelty of having a handphone. But that didn't stop people from continuing to buy handphones.

Er...those are what 'Wiicritics' and 'opposition' have been saying. I've read the article and there is no evidence to back this claim. Also, sales are expected to slow down after the festive season. You have to look at the sales onwards to Q3 and Q4 to see if it really is 'wearing off'.

OH, just like the psp did a ps2 on us? Success in handhelds doesn't make success in consoles and success in consoles don't make success in handheld... or else, the Gamecube and n64 should have done so much better since nintendo handhelds at the time were destroying their rivals.

The DS is a different scenario, simply because it has ridiculous 3rd party support and Nintendo's own excellent 1st party support.

Wii's 3rd party support is laughable at best right now.
