Isn't it crazy how Mario games have been so great for so long?

It just seems like eventually, something bad would happen. Something bad happened to Crash, Spyro, Sonic and lots of other mascots. It's hard to make a good video game, just 1 game. Tons of developers out there fail and never even release 1 good game in their entire careers, let alone make man great games and maintain that continuity for decades. Nintendo has consistently released great Mario games for so long, greatness has become expected.

Not only that, Mario is the most popular mascot in the history of video games. Mario doesn't get by through cheap gimmicks and casual appeal. Mario has huge expectations and a lot of hype to live up to, more hype and more expetations than anything else you could easily argue. Despite these huge expectations and steep hype to live up to, Mario always manages to live up to it and sometimes even set the new industry standard like Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario 64 etc.

Mario games never forget their roots and while always advancing and always improving, they still have that original feel. They always have that level of polish with games that you rarely ever find any bugs in. I still can't believe I 100% completed Super Mario 3D Land and didn't run into a single camera issue.

If next gen, some new Uncharted, Halo and Mario game were coming out on the same day, I would bet on the Mario game getting the highest reviews if it were a game in the main series.

To be fair, Mario did have his fair share of downtime with Sunshine. God, was that game inexcusably awful.

Ehh, I own that game and it was far from awful. It's actually a great game. It may not be amongst the best Mario games, but it is a 91.40% on Gamerankings.com. The game holds its own.

I agree with the first part of this post. Not with the second :P

Have you played it recently? Try it. It has aged worse than Mario 64, and that is saying something. The game just feels wrong, the camera control is awful, the platforming was fishy, the sense of momentum was off, everything was wrong. It did have great level design though.

I was recently thinking the same thing. It's the one franchise Nintendo has consistently kept fresh and innovative, and each game is basically better than the previous one.

The controls haven't held up, but it has definitely aged better than 64, which I found borderline unplayable last time I tried to play it again.

64 sucked as well but SMG 1 and 2 are pretty much perfect and 3D land is great as well.

Oh give me a break, the game wasn't that bad It was the most open ended of the 3d mario games and it was definitely the most difficult.

Yup, can't fault them. Nintendo make some very solid games.

Also, I liked sunshine. Screw the haters.

No, it was awful! The Voice Acting, FLUDD, and the terribad levels.

It's a horrible Mario game.

Its really not surprising at all. Unlike SOME OTHER developers, Nintendo has some sense of self control. I can say this confidently after they stopped pumping out Mario Party games like madmen.

Sunshine was amazing. The only really bad Mario games I can think of are the educational Mario games during the SNES period.

Mario Land 1 is below average. It's the only "bad" Mario platformer really.

Not really crazy, but amazing I say. I've loved every Mario Game I've played (both 2d and 3d [and 3D]).

Eh. I thought Sunshine was great at the time. I still like it, actually. It's only the Wii games I don't enjoy, but that's solely because I don't like the Wii controls. I'm not aware of any Mario games I thought were bad after playing them.... maybe the one for the original Gameboy was annoying at times? >.>
