Been a while but I started listening to the OoT soundtrack just for nostalgia sake, and I can say that its a masterpiece, sets the gold standard for games. Its so amazing, I can't believe how much they nailed it. Are there any games that come close or beat OoT in music?

It isn't even the best Zelda OST. It contains several remixes of A Link to the Past songs, and while they are all great, it's not very original.

The best video game OST still remains "Roar of the Earth" from Shadow of the Colossus.

Zelda and enjoyable OST's never went hand in hand in my opinion. I tend to find most Zelda game tracks to be very monotonous.

There are a few I consider better than OOT:

  • Shadow of the Colossus
  • Final Fantasy X
  • The Last of Us
  • Journey

And a few that are comparable, but merit argumentation:

  • Halo: Combat Evolved
  • Pokemon R/B
  • Kingdom Hearts II

I considered listing DOOM but it's too recent for me to have a declarative opinion yet.

@Pedro: As the communists tell us, humanity evolves and thrives through conflict. Conflict builds character and, without character, the Fatherland is lost.

So we argue about video game soundtracks to make ourselves strong.

I love Doom (2016). But it's soundtrack wasn't even in the same stadium as Doom/Doom II.

Only song I like from OoT is Lost Woods AKA Saria's Song and that's about it.

Awesome Zelda game BTW when I played it on N64 & now, 3DS.

Personally I've heard soooooo many excellent soundtracks that I don't think that I could ever properly have a best ever list. I would say that for Zelda games I think A Link to the Past is better then Ocarina of Time. Some other favourites of mine for other games are:

- Chrono Trigger

- Chrono Cross

- Blazblue

- The King of Fighters '95 and '96

- Final Fantasy 7, 8, 10, 13

- Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Lol. Since when did OoT receive that acclaim?

Well best ost is subjective but people generally regard FF as the best in osts.

Other personal pick is

Nier

Persona series

Halo

Shadow of the colossus

Last of us

I remember I liked the music for trigger, but the SNES/CRT tube tv wasn't exactly putting out HD audio

It's weird how I was disappointed with the ost at the time.....not necessarily the actual music, I remember some catchy tunes....it was more the sound quality I think. I just remember being disappointed with the ost of OOT. I think I enjoyed A Link to the Past more. Anyways, just a matter of taste, been a very long time....maybe today if I'd listen to them again my opinion would change.

I cant get excited about video game music. I love the old school stuff a lot made on limited hardware. That stuff was cool and interesting. But modern games just have normal sounding music and surely we can find better music in this world to be excited about than what is made for video games right? Someone explain to me this video game music thing people are always going on about. I remain open minded to anything people may want to tell me that could help me understand this and I don't mean to sound in any way confrontational about it. I don't get it.

OoT had a great soundtrack, but, my favorite soundtrack of all time is Streets of Rage 2. Shout out to Streets of Rage 3 for following up with another great soundtrack.

Also worth a mention are Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Super Mario Bros.

@mark1974:

I think for a lot of people it's about how well the music complements the game. Like I'm not just gonna sit back and listen to the OST for Hotline Miami, Shovel Knight, or Doom 4, but holy shit does the music just work perfectly for those games. There are countless examples of game tracks that work so well for what the game is doing even if the music itself doesn't really stand alone as something great.

Though I'd also say that some games just do have some legitimately great music regardless. But of course like you said, you can surely find better music outside the scope of gaming tunes. Kinda gets into a similar realm as game stories (though I do have more respect for game music lol).

@ConanTheStoner: Yeah that's how I feel. The music serves it's purpose and it would be awful to have nothing but silence. But it is like you say, just like stories in games. They fill a need but are super weak compared to actual good stories like in literature and movies. If someone made me a mixed tape of all kinds of awesome music and then all of the sudden some track from Zelda came on I would be like what the f*ck. It's not actual good music but just complimentary to the game. Like when riding the elevator. It's better than silence but not by that much.

It's great but I don't know if I'd consider OoT's soundtrack the best of all time.

TBH I don't even know what I'd consider the best of all time since there's a crapload of video game music I like alot...

I listened to OoT music and remembered why I turned it off. It and other soundtracks like it never serve to get me fired up to play the game. It doesn't mean the OoT music is bad. It simply means it's not my kind of game music.

The greatest game music to ever get me fired up to play a game is the original Hell March for Red Alert. The only music I kept on for a Nintendo game is the one for Wave Race 64.

I think people like to listen to videogame music as a trigger to remember a game, or a moment in one. Because when taken out of context, yeah videogame soundtracks dont cut it. They're mostly built as backdrops to compliment a game, rather than constructed to craft some album for the typical listening format for that medium.

Not that there arent good soundtracks out there. Machinarium and Sword & Sworcery EP's soundtrack - They're legitimately excellent as standalone albums, even though they were made as a soundtrack to a videogame. I guess both being adventure games might have had something to do with how flexible they were able to pull a collection of music together to make it work.

My issue is more along the lines of well, gamers lol. They have a boner for lame untextured string arrangements with oversaturated reverb, because the composer just threw sheet music at the biggest orchestra they could rent, all so that they can record something that sounds like it was ripped from daytime television Korean drama. Or they are into it being EPIC1!!1. Worse is when they start spreading those lame OC remixes that sample them.

Zelda has a great soundtrack to be sure but there are plenty of games with great tracks dating back to the NES days with midi music. Some of my favorites are most 8 and 16 bit Sonic games, Mario 3, Double Dragon, Final Fantasy 7, Zelda (of course), Shenmue, and Uncharted. Even Halo has a great soundtrack even if it's not a game I play, I still have the soundtrack to Halo 2.
