Is the Nintendo Switch OLED proof that Switch is on its last legs?

Historically, Nintendo usually announces a hardware revision towards the end of its life cycle. That's what they've been doing with their handhelds since GBA days. i.e. 3DS had a Lite and XL model. So it seems to me that all of this talk about great Switch sales may not be telling us the full story. Nintendo seems to think that they will need to release a successor in a couple years or so. This would also jeopardize Switch's chances of breaking the PS2's all time sales record which @casey-wegner loves to talk about.

As long as the Switch brand is selling, Nintendo has no reason to pump out a new console. That’s just the reality of it. People are either gonna fall for this crap console revision or they won’t. The only way for Nintendo to get the message is to not buy it. Show them this was a misstep and they’ll react. The problem for Nintendo making a new console is they’re so hit or miss. With Nintendo, you never know if you’re getting a Wii/Switch or a Wii U.

It only means that Nintendo, for some reason, doesn't feel the need to make the Switch any more powerful before a proper successor.

I dont know about need to but 2023-2024 is when i would think they would release a successor just as part of their own release schedule.

i mean the switch was released in 2017 so 5-6 years shelf life is pretty normal for a console.

Not really. Nintendo has a plethora of exclusives that will entice gamers to own which ever Switch console.

The short answer is no. To be honest I think this model seals Nintendo hitting 120+ million (most likely far more).

I said it after E3 when all they had to show was Warioware, a Mario Party compilation and a 2D Metroid that Nintendo was buying time until their next console. This system is dead and anyone who thought it would surpass PS2 sales is deluded.

I wouldn’t exactly say that the Switch is on its “last legs” considering that it’s selling like it currently is and will probably be on the market for another two years. I will say that this in all likelihood puts the idea of a Switch “Pro” to rest and Nintendo will just transition into its successor.

Hardly, but I will say I don't expect things to go smoothly during their next big system release jump. Many hardly noticed the lack of rights retention across devices after Wii days because many skipped the Wii U, plus they had something else, a BC buy-in, and a Wii mode on Wii U after a rights transfer to access old stuff. But, if they haven't figured out how to do cross system rights sharing for same users across devices, I wonder if people won't stand for it, because there are a lot of Switch owners now.

Yes, tech-wise. Nintendo is milking the Switch as much as possible before releasing a 4k model. Funny thing is, this OLED model will sell rings around both XSX/S and PS5 this holiday.

So sales-wise, not in the least.

I remember how much people seemed to hate the idea of mid-gen upgrades. Now some people get mad when it doesn't happen. I guess it's probably not the same people but I guess my point is even if you don't like that the Switch isn't getting a The Pro version, there's probably plenty of people happy enough.

I just learned that they didn't even bothered upgrading the batteries on a system that's coming out almost half a decade after the original. Just pathetic.

It's almost as if a bigger, better screen doesn't require more battery life.

Yea, that's what I'm getting at. There probably aren't that many potential buyers left, so this is aimed at existing owners who want an upgrade. They've done this before with previous products.

They are dominating the heart and minds and Souls of the hardcore Gamers as well. I'm a hardcore gamer I've been playing games ever since the original 8-bit Nintendo console. I've owned all the consoles from all three console manufacturers over the years. And the switch is my most supported console of all of them. I bought and played more games on the system than any system that I've owned and had so much fun. I've just went out and bought Y's 9 which was just released today by the way. With the amount of sales that the system has and with all the competition from the mobile market there is no way it can only be casuals supporting the system. Most casuals are on mobile anyway. The truth of the matter is Nintendo has stolen the hearts of all Gamers around the world with this console.

Why people think Nintendo would launch a new hardware revision, during a global chip shortage, following the launch debacle that the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles went through shows how out of touch most gamers are. Launching a screen and dock update will give the aging Switch hardware a sales boost during the holiday quarter. Just the boost it needs to continue it’s hot streak.

Nintendo is currently in a 3+ year NPD win streak. Lowering the price during that streak would be idiotic. In what world do you live in?

I live in the present, thanks. They launched a system a long ass time ago. The minimum they should've done is lower the standard model price by $50 and sold the OLED version for $300. The replacement for the Switch is around the corner, and they haven't lowered its price of the original Switch by one bit. Who does that? It doesn't matter if a system sells a ton. When it gets older, you lower the price, its only logical. The Switch is a ripoff. Nothing else.
