The amount of content in this game is amazing and the season pass was really well done. They brought on these very popular licensed characters and apparently are going to bring more https://screenrant.com/super-smash-bros-ultimate-dlc-future-plans/

I wish all fighting games gave us this amount of content. But it's not just about quantity it's about quality and value. For that reason, I think Smash Ultimate is the gold standard for fighting games. What say you, SW? Do you agree?

Ask to Fighters Generation, Shoryuken, or any fighting game site. I DARE YOU!

You'll be swarmed like a bunch of unprepared Terrans and Protoss are against the Zerg.

The standard from what I can tell is still Street Fighter II. Since that's where practically all fighting games built upon.

The genre may have evolved, but that game, and all it's pillars are still used.

Masterpiece is thrown round willy nilly for garbage shit, be hard pressed to deny Street Fighter II and it's improved upon iterations, earns that title.

Following the examples of how Nintendo does DLC so well, not alot of fighting developers don't wanna take notes from Nintendo is just mind-blowing. (Looking at you Mortal Kombat X & 11)

I think Nintendo are a bit weird with the amount of content they gave us in Smash Ultimate. They really didn't have to do all that to warrant the price of the game or sell a huge amount of it. Other fighting games sells just fine with a fraction of the content Smash Ultimate has.

It's awesome, though. Nintendo did an amazing job that puts other fighting games to shame.

In terms of mechanics and gameplay it's Street Fighter.

Always has been.

To answer your question the answer is a yes followed swifty be a well no. Yes because they did find a way to popularize the brawler fighter, aka the free for all multiplayer fighter. These fighting game have mechanics which allow for at least 3 or more combatants to be on the field which is fun. Now when it comes to 1v1 yeah Smash Bros aint even close. Street Fighter and like most have reference SF2 is the gold standard in which everyone borrows and uses mechanics from. Heck I would even say SFIV is the latest 1v1 fighter template as of late.

Smash Bros. is too unconventional of a fighting game for it to be the gold standard.

I hate 1v1 fighting games, but I don't think its right to compare Smash to them.

Ultimate is the gold standard for the amount of franchises and content in one game. But its sad there are no event matches or adventure mode like in Melee.

I'd say Smash Bros is the gold standard for fan-service, and I don't mean that in a disparaging way. It's clear a lot of time and labour went into this game. There is so much content stuffed into it, the amount of details and easter eggs seems endless, and the level of polish is just top notch.

But a gold standard for fighting games, no. So much of the magic of Smash Bros is the fan service, and too much of that can really muddy up a more traditional fighting game. Gold standard to me would be something like The Last Blade. Deep mechanics, dozen or so unique but totally balanced characters, mimimal story elements to give context but not get in the way.

I own it.. I've played it a ton. I don't get it...

SMASH is like a 6/10 franchise for me. Absolutely no staying power after 10 hours, but maybe that's just me.

For me it is. Keep in mind I don't play fighting games competitively. I just enjoy playing 4 player Smash with items turned on.

Despite its popularity, I doubt even Smash Bros. fans would consider it the gold standard of fighting games.

For content, presentation, and fan service sure. Not really so much for mechanics though.

Hell No.

It’s not even the best smash game.

Having lots of things to unlock doesn’t mean much if the core gameplay and controls are trash.

@dzimm: You'd be surprised how dumb the hardcore Smash fanboys are. I read a few of them gushing over Ken and Ryu being in the game and how they felt and played better in Smash then any SF game...let that nugget of stupidity sink in.

I know Smash is not the golden standard for fighting games, though I will say that what Ultimate represents for the franchise and the support it gets is an example to follow IMO. I still and will likely always love the franchise.

Even calling Smash a fighting game makes me cringe. Is it the best brawl type fighting game? Yes. Is it the best fighting game? In my opinion it isn't even close.

For it's type of fighting game YES!

I don't think Playstation All Stars Battle Royal 2 will able to dethrone Super Smash Bros series.

Just like how first PASBR is inferior to Super Smash Bros Brawl.
