Not that I care as it's LONG past its welcome, but it just seems like I don't hear much about it anymore. It was this great indie darling and now just another corporate beast. I kind of noticed that it doesn't chart on NPD anymore and Twitch numbers for it aren't that big these days. Did it finally peak?

I know Microsoft envisioned great things for this game, like boosting up struggling Xbox software numbers since they purchased it for the Xbox division, but is that dream dead? You'd think the microtransaction well would still be deep enough to keep it charted on NPD since it goes by digital revenue and not unit sales. Oh well.

Will Microsoft respond with a Minecraft 2 soon?

The kids are all about the Roblox these days.

I still think Minecraft is still extremely popular though, It's just not the kind of game we squabble over in SW.

Yeah, people are still logging in, but at least from the console side, there aren't many new customers these days. Maybe it's different on PC. But it just seems... quiet.

Have you done some research or have you just made that up?

I'd bet the majority play it on the PC or Tablets anyway. Not that MS would care it's all the same to them.

@BenjaminBanklin: You are aware Minecraft is on PS4 & Nintendo Switch right? There’s the various console editions, pocket edition, java edition, windows 10 edition, and bedrock. The Switch has the Switch console edition and the upcoming bedrock edition. Console edition and bedrock differ somewhat, but bedrock is going to be receiving all the support. Microsoft spent lots of money on Minecraft, of course they're gonna promote it whatever it takes. The people who run the Minecraft feed are always sharing community creations and on the PC, it's a different world and Minecraft was always, always meant to be played on the PC over consoles. I guess the numbers are different from console to PC and Minecraft 2 is just way too early, I save that for next-gen at the very least.

Did I not just say it doesn't chart on NPD anymore? At least in the top 20, meaning not many are buying it or buying into the microtransactions for consoles. Then, I proceeded to say the story could be different with PC. It was a fairly clear explanation I believe.

I'd guess that lots of people download Minecraft. Do the NPDs include downloads?

I thought Minecraft was a cute, little game! A fun distraction, anyway. But yeah, it was kind of a fad... You can build and play survival but there's really only so much you can do on it. The latest updates I heard were about adding undersea life and more mini games. Not to mention the crazy amount of skinpacks it keeps adding. We got Final Fantasy XV recently.

Yes.

Fair enough. Maybe it is slowing down a bit then. It has sold 144 million copies though.

Lot's of competition from Fornite now and Roblox is really popular as well.

All my kids and their friends still play. There still adding to the game as well. They just added turtles. I don't know why the Op thinks the game is fading. There's know way they will being doing a 2, I think the game is more about adding content than making a 2nd one.

My youngest kid has Minecraft on both her laptop and the old PS3. The one for PS3 collects dust while the one on her laptop is still going strong.

And yes. She likes Roblox as well.

Minecraft on the PC doesn't look like it's fading at all, at least with my kid's demographics. I think the mods have a lot to do with it.

Minecraft is nowhere near dying/dead.

The reason you don't see it charting as high anymore is because it's starting to reach market saturation (in other words, everyone pretty much owns it already in one form or another). And as it was already pointed out earlier in this thread, the game had over 70 million active users as of January 2018. So yeah, you've clearly got it backwards. Minecraft is absolutely not fading. Not even close.

I think you're underestimating the potential of Minecraft. Things like this are some of the real reasons Microsoft wanted to purchase it.

@nepu7supastar7:

I'm not surprised, which is exactly my point.

Most people only see a survival game with basic building elements, not realizing that there's actually a lot more to it. There are players who are actually creating fully functioning tools using the resources that the game provides (which is amazing). This is just one example. Browse around YouTube a little and you'll also find things like functioning RAM, Calculators, etc.

It's not just about building houses with blocks.

Why does the game hurt you so much? Past its welcome? The only welcome it had was other people played it and enjoyed it. You were never forced to be one of them.

Every game fades, but I suspect the franchise isn't done just yet. When it fades proper they will release a sequel, without it's original creator unfortunately.

I think Microsoft invested in the IP less for Xbox and more for licensing it to schools as educational software which stands to make more money than it simply could through the traditional gaming market.

Any news on that front of it not working out, then you have your answer.

It's still popular but it's definitely not as big as it used to be. A lot of the big Youtubers that would have played it in the past have moved onto other games. Even the Yogscast hardly play it now.

@davillain-: Don't forget, Microsoft is supporting Crossplay with the Bedrock Edition. And PS4 owners won't get the update due to Sony not wanting the crossplay

At this point, I don't think Sony cares about supporting crossplay anyways, even the fans couldn't careless about it, but then again, most of the Cows here have PC, so I imagine they already played Minecraft.

In my opinion at this point Sony blocking crossplay just seem arbitrary and just prolonging the inevitable.

@boycie: Funny have the tables have turn. Sony was all ready to support crossplay and MS refuse to last-gen and now, look who's play the victim here. Sorry but Sony has every right to say no! Not that I personally care. If you want to play with the same folks, buy a PS4 or you can just sit here and bitch all day long.
