Is it true Halo 3 doesn't even run at 720p but is actually at 640p?

Resolution doesn't really affect graphics.

Then why are current gen games all not running in 420p or just using regular rca cables? Why is hdtv not run in 420p? Why do people spend thousands of dollars for a 1080p tv if they could just buy a 50 dollar walmart tv?

there's a difference between 1080p and 480p, but no discernable difference between 640p and 720p

Im just wondering where xbox360's graphical superiority comes into play if it can't even play a game at 720p. This isn't some generic 3rd party game. This is Xbox360's most anticipated game.

i don't think it's the 360's hardware is bad, it's just that bungie used this technique for some reason. the 360 will be running alan wake, which has amazing graphics and a big world, so it can't be 360 hardware

720P is the begining of the "HD" resolutions. 640p is progressive scan. That doesn't mean it looks bad, it's just not HD.

Go to bungie.net and they have it all explained, and why it's a better choice for them than 720p. Actually it's only on the vertical axis by the way. Oh, and the game looks great. How beautiful the game looks is determined by the models mostly, not the resolution.

Do you see where im getting at though. A game system setup to use hdmi and 1080p has a game in the making for several years that will be the biggest selling game of all time and is supposed to show what the system can do. Yet the software company *who is owned by microsoft* cant even get their own system to run the game at 720p.

Considering people only realized this by counting onscreen pixels, it's not that big a deal. It isn't something that nearly anybody would notice.

Naturally it's more complicated than that. In fact, you could argue we gave you 1280 pixels of vertical resolution, since Halo 3 uses not one, but two frame buffers both of which render at 1152x640 pixels. The reason we chose this slightly unorthodox resolution and this very complex use of two buffers is simple enough to see lighting. We wanted to preserve as much dynamic range as possible so we use one for the high dynamic range and one for the low dynamic range values. Both are combined to create the finished on screen image.

Halo3 looks fantastic on my 1080p LCD. I could care less what resolution its running in. The lighting in the game gives everything a very cool look I have never seen before.

The people who spend "thousands of dollars" on a 1080p TV are wasting their money if it's above 50", because you can get the same quality on a TV of half the size at 720p. If they have a 720p TV at least 50" big however, then, oh dear. Also, they might not have "thousands of dollars" to spend in the first place, so they'll have to put up with playing Halo 3 on a "50 dollar Walmart TV". :P

Not that anyone will believe me now, but I noticed this in the store watching a display. I didn't know at the time it was a resolution thing, but I noticed some jaggy trails, particularly when swinging the view left to right. It seemed like the walls were quite grainy and pixellated. I mean it wasn't awful, but it certainly looked lightyears behind BioShock.

It is kind of unfortunate that they couldn't do this game in 720p natively. Everyone knows upscaling doesn't really cut it. There isn't that big a difference in the numbers, but if the results are those trails that I saw, ugh. Supposedly it looks great in 1080p so I'll play it in 1080 when I get it.

Does your TV support 720p? If so, play it in that res. Interlaced is kind of gross. I bet you will notice a difference.

Ok, so i'm kinda of getting sick of these posts and I have to throw out this one question to you::

Does it really matter all that much?

That's it, thats the only question that really matters, and I'm going to venture a guess that the true answer is "No". Maybe i've just been playing games to long, but honestly, your going to sit there and tell me that a couple of "jaggies" hurt your gameplay experience? What are you? A monster with eagle-like vision? How about you move that chair you sit in more then 5ft away from your massive TV and try and actually enjoy a game for once.

I myself can barely tell the difference between a HD movie and a DVD movie (the only HD difference I have ever been able to tell is when watching Football). How about you people get your collective stuck-up graphicx-whor heads out of your asses and go enjoy a game based on the one thing that actually matters: Gameplay. Hell, it even has the word "Game" in it. Now if you excuse me, I have to go remember how to get through Fourside in Earthbound again (oh noes! the jaggies in Earthbound make it unplayable! OMG! Help me) ((idiots)).
