I think it is. Don't get me wrong, it's a fun franchise but it's not as good as many people make it out to be. Especially GTA IV
What do you guys think?

The franchise as a whole is something I've always liked. Even GTA IV, I'd be lying if I said I didn't enjoy it. But I felt like it didn't match the expectations set in me by San Andreas. But that alone is no reason for me to call the whole thing overrated, so no.starjet905Overrated =/= bad.
The franchise as a whole, no. GTA is one of the most influential franchises of the industry, and GTA III was one of the games that got me into this hobby, so I wouldn't call it overrated. Even today, I love to play older GTA games.
I do think GTA IV is slightly overrated, but I still really loved the game, though not as much as SA and VC.

If this question was about GTA IV in particular, I would've answered yes, even though it's a good game.
Some drawn out dull storytelling and generally hollow world and mechanics that just don't work as well as they should.skrat_01
this is how i feel about it too. i love open world games, but GTA is only good for making some driving-mayhem on a large map. it's fun to do for an hour or two, but that's it. the big city is ultimately quite empty.
i like exploring, discovering interesting places and finding lots of variable enemies. and loot. but yeah, i know, GTA is not about that.
To be honest, the last amazing experience i had in GTA was Vice City
I completely missed GTAIV as when it eventually arrived on PC, it was one horrible piece of software. unoptimised crap and completely unplayable
I recently picked it up cheap on my PS3 and i'm totally un-impressed. Maybe i need to be on the crest of an every breaking wave of games but GTA IV is just not enjoyable,
I ended up putting Peggle on after an hour ro so. Its an all together better game
Typical Contrarians, I hate everything that the majority likes, and now I'm going to name drop a bunch of awful shit. Gta and rdr were the best two games of gen 7, deal with it. No one will ever like scifi fantasy bullcrap.joehult
typical COD/GTA player.
Story, the most important aspect of a game, seems to always be missing in all the iterations. Sadly, GTAV is looking to be no different :(
This is why we can't have nice things.
To answer the topic question, no, GTA is not overrated, although every other game in its genre is underrated.
No. The gameplay is solid, the characters are great and so is the story. There are plenty of things to do and the online will be something from out of this world. Definitely not overrated.
Yh definitely not overrated
Anything but yes is wrong.
Most of mainstream franchise are overrated like COD, Halo, GTA, Final Fantasy, Uncharted, Gears. and on and on. GTA is no exception. there i said. Mafia 1 was so much better than GTA3 when it was released.SNIPER4321
Mafia 1 was a major borefest, a good story and shitty gameplay.
All things considered? Nope. GTA3 was absolutely groundbreaking upon release, and Vice City was an excellent follow up. San Andreas was great, it just happened to bite off a little more than it could chew. GTA4 was a great change of pace from the game's usual formula, and The Ballad of Gay Tony was a glorious return to form.
I always have fun with this series, no matter what.
Bar none, they make the most compelling open world cities in the industry. So no they aren't overrated.
People deciding to only run around like morons shooting people then ten minutes later cry about being bored is their fault.
I know many people hate on GTA IV, but as a resident of NYC, the model for Liberty City, I don't think I've ever seen a more accurate representation of New York in ANY video game. This is one thing that GTA always get right, the feel of running/driving around an actual city. their cities feel like an actual place instead of a bunch of buildings and streets slapped together.
Just the 4th one, only things it had going for it was the atmosphere and free play. Bad story, mostly forgettable characters, bad gunplay etc.tagyhagThe gunplay was far better than previous GTA's and the ai was a huge upgrade as well. Story and characters are subjective.
