On many gaming sites (Gamespot, Game Trailers, IGN, etc..) I always see graphics comparisons from consoles to PC. Most of us know that graphics on PC are relative, meaning they can be great or not so great depending on hardware. On consoles however, the graphics are the same for their respective consoles (except if there is an optional texture pack, which is usually only on the 360 because of the different SKUs people might have. The PS3 has those texture packs built into the game, if it's there).

My question is, is graphical comparisons between the consoles and pc a waste of time? We know that if you have a good PC, you will always have better graphics than consoles. And, if the game looks similar like Dark Souls did, there will always be mods that will improve the graphics substantially.

Discuss.

Graphics on consoles can differ too. There are still people that game on SDTVs for example.

Yes, but PCs have options like PhysX, extra buffering, extra Anti-aliasing, better shaders, soft shadows, mods, etc..

And to answer your question: no.

Comparing 2 pixel differences between a PS3 and 360 game, and claiming one version is better than the other one because of it, are a waste of time though.

is not a waste when we have a broken game on one console but perfectly playable on the other like for example Bayonetta.

90% of the time the differences are not even worth mentioning, maybe they can do some internal comparisons, but if the differences are minimal they shouldn't put up any comparisons.

Yeah or something along the lines of Mafia 2 which looked almost last gen on PS3.

But comparing minimal differences ? Boring. I'm not going to want a 360 or PS3 version more because of some minimal difference.

No.

I like being constantly reassured that my primary gaming platform graphics are superior. It's a essential reminder that the investment I made makes me apart of a higher power -- it's a constantly good reminder that I did good by no longer settling for a class of consolite peasantry.

Yes, especially on Gamespot when 720p is the highest quality the video goes too. The difference between 720p and 1080p is ridiculous.

Not really but they use compressed videos that don't show the full framerate and resolution difference.

This is true too. At least there is a difference in the details, not like the consoles where you try hard sometimes to see a difference only to realise there is none. Least the PC difference is noticeable

My favorite ones are the graphic enhancement mods. Seeing how the games look compared to the console versions. Sure, they hurt me emotionally and occassionally they make me cry. But it's still kewl to see.

Yeah some mods can really push a game far and beyond what the console versions look like. Skyrim for example. Most are crap in game but like you said, cool to see.

This site for example has given technical goty to mostly console games , which is laughable.

I don't mind if it's just to compare notes or to put your system's best foot forward. So long as the word versus is not there and not an attempt in ownage. Unfortunately, around here, every thread is just an excuse to slag the competition.

I voted yes because PC will always win, no contest. I would like to add though that it's stupid to argue over the console versions as well. At least in console vs PC there are very clear differences, but for PS3 vs 360 the differences are so minor.

This. I almost never notice any real different between consoles, PC, well that is just a waste of time. I really dont understand why they bother to put a console up against PC.

Nah, consolites can behold what true high definition is once they compare the differences. There's never something wrong in opening the eyes of a blind man.

well to be fair...the graphics that some devs are churning out of 7-8 year old tech is pretty impressive...that being said...theres only so much you can do when you can only run ~dx9c...but then i remember that the witcher 2 is dx9c...and then my argument goes to s***

tl;dr its impressive how good some console games can look on this old tech they have but they still cant technically compare to pc

Definitely. It's like comparing a 1966 Fiat 500 with an Aston Martin.

Even an average PC still look better than consoles. PS3 and Xbox 360 are comparable with a high-end PC from 2003. This is 2012 now, so average PCs can do better than consoles, and those costs about £500. Not as expensive as many consolites think.

I couldn't find that article. But, this one tells it better (somewhere in the middle) about the lighting for the 360 being better.

Of course, that's the lighting. In most other praphical areas, the 360 falls short.

DF do a good job of PC vs consoles, except for Witcher 2, they turned on SSAO/Bloom on PC, which change the lighting a lot (for the worse imo) and then said it looked more natural on 360, since 360 version didn't have SSAO/Bloom.

Pretty much, they also changed some color on the 360 version, some scenes on PC have this blue filter (BF3 style) some on 360 actually do look more natural.

The question for that is , "Is there a setting to turn off SSAO/Bloom on the PC graphics options?" I would think there is. But, sometimes you never know like what happened with Crysis 2 when it first released.

Don't bother trying to engage him. Every comparison he's ever seen is the standard PC edition VS 360 enhanced edition, and he hasn't played both. Everything he says on this topic is completely based on the DF comparison shots, which were standard edition VS enhanced. The PC enhanced edition has all the same upgrades that went into the 360 enhanced edition, plus better AA, SSAO, higher resolution and framerate.

Actually he did play both.

He played the witcher 2 on PC at the lowest settings and 800x600 and his graphics card barely managed it.

No wonder he keeps saying the 360 version is better. But he can't seem to convince anyone else of that and he has been trying for months

Well, I was just wondering because I don't have the game. The article I linked to seems to support what loosey had said earlier. I'd like to see a comparison of the Enhanced Edition for both platforms. Unfortunately, it's surprisingly hard to find. I just said to heck with it.

Digital Foundry did a comparisson with the enchanced and they say it has much better lighting, which is a fact, i have played both versions and 360 is way ahead in HDR and lighting use, plus some nicer art in spots

loosingENDS

Point me to it because all I saw at DF for the PC was the standard version.

Just read at the very end of the article that confirm the PC never getting the new lighting

The whole article states how much better the new lighting is

Casey sent off an email to the Witcher 2 devs asking about The Enhanced lighting. Let me try and find it.

Until Durago and Orbis come out.

But actually, it can be an informative comparison in some cases because not all PC ports are as good as they could be.

PC versus console threads can be a bit amusing at least. 360 vs PS3 is just boring, they are far too similar.

It is hilarious to think of though, the idea of a bunch of grown men who spend hundreds on consoles, PC hardware, accessories, not to mention the games themselves, find it neccessary to constantly duke it out here on SW and establish that they are the better shopper, better gamer and have made the better choice.

yes, PC is a platform not a real "system". Comparing graphics is generally to try to understand the performance of a system and when the system isn't defined at all, its pointless to compare. The consoles are types of PC's, mac is a PC, linux is a PC, smart phones are types of PC's... Personal Computer is a very general term unless your explicitly referring to a windoze desktop/laptop type of PC which is the normal association.

No.

This is a PC:-

When I say PC, that means I'm talking about desktop computer, just like this picture. When I read or hear the word PC, I automatically assume it's a desktop computer.
