Is gaming as we know it over?

This gen has been piss poor. It's been nothing but:

> Movie games

> Microtransactions

> Open world games

> Online only

> Battle royale

> Fake 4k

Why would anyone have faith in next gen?

I hear you... Although as far as Movie games go Spider-Man is the best of the bunch since it feels like a marvel comic come to life.

That being said RE2 came this year. Maybe Gears 5 and Halo Infinite... will come.

I can't keep up with the games. I've had to clear my Steam Wishlist because I kept getting E-mails "a game on your wishlist is on sale".

But I'm also on PC and play a wide variety of genre, so pickings aren't exactly slim.

@DonaId: They did do some great things with Spiderman, but they really dropped the ball with the boss fights and the busy work missions (backpacks, pigeons, etc)

Despite the couple of rarities, this gen has made me want to give up gaming more than any other.

Yeah I am feeling a bit overwhelmed with the last six months of offerings on PC, let alone the entire "gen".

Not to mention the games from years ago I still play.

@dimebag667: stealth sections should have been optional too. Agreed on most of the bosses.

Arkham city did bosses better. Loved traversing the city though

Giving up is the best thing, be 10 or 60 years from now you'll be under the ground and forgotten about within a month.

At least Halflife 2 was good.

This gen has had my favorite games: Metro Exodus, DMC5, Assassin's creed Origins, The Witcher 3, Forza Horizon 4, Red Dead Redemption 2, Titanfall 2, Apex Legends, Overwatch and people would slaughter me for this one but I love Star Wars Battlefront 2 as well. Sure, all these games are mostly mere evolutions from what came before but they are dang fine evolutions at that. Try going back to ps3/Xbox 360 era games and you'll feel that a lot of those games don't nearly control as intuitive and smooth as current gen games do.

I think next generation will be the last necessary generation (if it's modular for future incremental updates). An 8 core 16 thread Ryzen CPU will seriously open the doors to developers to improve AI, dynamic effects, amount of stuff happening on screen and so on. Basically the Game Developer and their artist's quality will decide a game's outcome quality. Game Engine's are becoming more efficient through techniques, efficiency scaling is more important than throwing more TFLOPS at hardware kits. And yes, the game industry has been known to be cleaner and more industry healthy traits. Gaming has become so big shady business practices are leaching the masses, but there are many games out this gen that top last gen easily. The backlog increases by the month...

Last gen was much worse. this gen has some really amazing games (Doom 2016 and Metro Exodus) and some games are really really bad (wolfenstein and tomb raider).

its ok generation. i give it like 7/10. need more SP FPS.

All we need is XCOM 3. The second game made the previous gen almost entirely on its own for me personally. In addition there's been the rise of the pseudo-retro indie games, the highlight of those being Enter the Gungeon. Everybody's Gone to the Rapture was a unique game with visuals only the current gen could provide, and with a VR headset (which I use for everything now) it is creepy and immersive. Live streaming at the touch of a button has brought an extra dimension to gaming, and we can even play classics like Final Fight and Streets of Rage 2 on PSN. I'lll admit the mainstream has gotten very stale but there's still plenty to satisfy all tastes if you look for it.

This gen has been piss poor. It's been nothing but:

> Movie games - Some of the best selling games out, if people buy them dev's are going to make them

> Microtransactions - As long as they are for cosmetic only, they are easily ignored. If not then completely ignore the game

> Open world games - Again selling like hot cakes, see movie games

> Online only - If it a multiplayer game then it pretty much has to be, online only single player is silly and I don't understand dev's wanting to restrict their audience

> Battle royale - Once again massively popular, see movie games

> Fake 4k - Console problem, don't care

Why would anyone have faith in next gen?

I blame the gamers as much as the corporations. People are being stupid and keep buying games that are online only and games that are nothing more than rng lootbox money sinks.

As long as corporations keep dishing out this garbage and the weak minded keep buying it, it just won't stop. Sometimes the more money people have, the more stupid they are.

No, this gen has been great.

New IPs, new strategy games, the return of the classic western RPG, Japanese development returning to top form, indie releases as far as the eye can see, and Nintendo going on a streak of super high quality releases.

Yea, we have had the holdovers from last gen, with the crap micro transactions, awful AAA money grabs like Destiny and Anthem, and the usual COD clones, but that stuff has been losing steam and been shunned by the community as a whole in light of all the creativity coming along.

I’m really worried about games as service, that needs to be killed and done away with ASAP, but I’d say this gen has been very, very good.

Yes it's over.... Too many services, games and experiences to be had to keep a bead on, but that's also not a bad thing...

Gamers have more choice to play to your tastes... The indie scene has been dropping bomb after bomb for as long as I can remember and big budget games are so frequent you can pick which are worth your time and ignore the rest...

Things are definitely different... But not worse. The physical media folks are probably having the biggest panic attack, but even that will come and go.

@misrespect: Huh? I love PUBG and it’s my second favorite game this gen right behind the original Titanfall.

So no - this has been a great generation. You just bought the wrong console. Lol ‘movie games’ and ‘fake 4k’? Why’d you buy a PS4?

Gaming as I knew and loved it has been dead for a few years now... that doesn't mean that I'm giving up though. Fool me 1,382,874 times shame on me, fool me... you get the point.. lol

Avatar image for nerdrage

No.

What's changed is the direction of gaming. And that's because interests and demands are changing as well as tools development avenues. And all of that is good!

Gaming has only been truly dead once, in 1983. It stayed dead for nearly 3 years before Nintendo came along and brought it back to life.

Avatar image for raining51

If you think about it gaming has really always changed a lot so basically this answer is yes because yes but no because if it changes then that means gaming as we know it has stayed the same.
