Seriously, every boss battle I can remember playing seems to be dodge and attack. I never really noticed it until now, from mario to zelda, to Uncharted to Metal gear, to gears of war.... to sonic.

How do you expect to fight a boss? Should we sit down and talk with the boss?

I guess when you strip away all the elements of a boss battle it is, but that's also like saying every single platformer is the same because all you're technically doing in every single one is overcoming environmental obstacles.

No. Another example: Mr freeze in Arkham City

Technically you are dodging him and then attacking when you can.

Again, that's if you strip away everything that actually makes the fight interesting and look at it from a bare bones point of view.

No, sometimes it's all QTE like in Warhammer Space Marine.

I don't think sneaking around can actually be considered dodging, at least not when talking about gameplay mechanics.

that's what combat is so yeah, even in shadow of the colossus. Defend against an enemies attack and counter is conflict, if it's a boss battle that's exactly what it is.

The End in MGS3 or at least the way I do it. Sneak and hold him up 3 times. Never attacked him at all.

That is a very reduced way of wording it.

I think you're larger issue is that too often boss fights are based on learning a pattern, and attacking when the pattern is over. Which is true, those type of fights can be really boring.

I know what you mean MOST GAMES. Fight big guy with OP health/strength/speed and attack, attack, attack, doge. sometimes they toss in some stupid shit like dodge, dodge, pull lever, dodge

basically same thing with minor changes, But what you going to do? Can't change the entire game up at the end or expect to sit around a table with mug of coffee and shake hands

The End in Snake Eater begs to differ. Atleast, 2 alternate ways to win the battle.

I mean....you kind of ARE dodging the attack, maybe hide in the grass, but you still have to dodge and attack....I can't remember if any game has a boss where you have to out-think him. Like a battle of whits.

@ps4hasnogames: Are aware of the 2 alternate ways to beat him? When he's first introduced, if you had already picked up the sniper rifle you can nail him with a headshot before even getting to the forced confrontation.

Also, another way when you actually do get to the fight, is just to reset your time by several weeks and when you load the game up, walk into another area of the fight and Naked Snake will come across his dead body in a cutscene, lmao.

Is every boss battle just use console and play with controls?

If you're going to boil games down to something stupid like that you might as well take it further.

No.

it's more like dodge and attack the glowy obvious part of a boss.

I was this close to including it. But no, I said to myself, that would just be too cynical.

Aren't all boss battles like that??

The End MGS3 is the same thing over a bigger area and stealth. One of the best boss battles ever.

It's a boss fight designed to test your takedown abilities. Essentially, dodging (by avoid being seen) and attacking (by taking down Mr. Freeze).

It's not a bad thing that every boss battle is in essence "dodge and attack" if they are designed to test the new gameplay mechanics that was introduced to you as you go through the level. It can be fresh and (gasp) even inspiring to play.

it depends on the game. But for action games most of the time is like this because well, it's the only way to fight you know.

You obviously haven't played mgs games.

The end.

Don't have to do anything to defeat him.

Now get off the internet and don't come back till I tell you to.

The bosses in Ninja Gaiden aren't like that. I mean, yeah, you dodge and attack, but it's not the dodge, then counter formula most games have.

When you boil it down to the absolute basics, yes. Dodge and attack is usually how boss battles play out.

I'm not disagreeing with you, just saying that breaking it down to the technical aspects and all you're doing is dodging and attacking.

Although I happen to think that boss battles (good ones at least) are a bit more complex than that.

Have you ever played those crazy Japanese platforming fan-made games. Some bosses are just dodge.
