Poll Is Deathloop the Bioshock of this generation? (50 votes)

Yes 10%
No 50%
Haven't played it yet. 40%

Just beat Deathloop and I loved it! Definitely a breath of fresh air.. It's fun, stylish and smart. The setting and premise works and the gameplay loop offers lots of freedom and choice and replayability. I would consider this game innovative in a way that Bioshock was innovative for its time; It comes with fresh ideas to the genre. My only complaint is that the game doesn't explain itself very well. I think if they fixed up the tutorial section people would appreciate it more.

What say you, SW? Is Deathloop the Bioshock of this generation?

Bioshock was not innovative except it had innovative setting only. it was watered down System shock 2.

Deathloop is probably better than Bioshock.

Bioshock 1 was better game.

gameplay is mediocre in both bioshocks but original have better villain, better story, same setting.

although we both agree Bioshock Infinite is among the worst game ever made.

Its clear that Bioshock infinite made Bioshock 1 feel like System shock 2.

incredible achivement ken levinne. making infinite so bad so bad that it made actual water down System shock 2 feel like System shock 2 compare to this game.

i did get og bioshock vibes from time to time with deathloop, mainly from the the colourful and detailed retro inspired environments and enemy costume design. there's a few parallels you can draw between the two games but as an an overall cohesive experience bioshock wins and it's not even close.

I'd say Prey is the only game deserving of such a comparison. All the same, Arkane is awesome.

With respect to certain gameplay elements, you may have a case. But its atmosphere and narrative are nowhere close.

We both know this money goes to founding the sequel, which will be exclusive to Microsoft. That money will also go into fixing the fruit physics in Halo Infinite, which will lead to higher scores. Ask yourself this simple question, do you really want that to happen? As a Sony fan, i don't.

The Slabs are essentially Bioshock Adam powers and the gunplay seems like a copy/paste, which is a shame since Bioshock had shit gunplay even for it's day. I love the rest of Death Loop though.

@theam0g: it's not a linear FPS type game. It all depends on what you do. Lots of replayability and flexibility. There's also an online component that adds a totally different dimension to the game.

Bioshock is a joke of a game that was lucky enough to be released during a game drought.

Deathloop, despite the lack of hype, is much better than the Bioshock series.

I will never understand why Bioshock got so much praise. Good water effects, though :P

@mrbojangles25: Super interesting setting, great story and characters, great atmosphere, unique and (for its time) fresh gameplay, if they could have gotten the gunplay to be less clunky it wouldn't really have any faults. The games fantastic, sad it didn't pull you in.

Bioshock is certainly a game that I consider as 'more than the sum of it's parts'. It had a great story, atmosphere, setting, art design, voice acting, etc. General gameplay was lacking IMO, that's why I do think it's slightly overrated.

Bioshock 1 (and the series) isn't a bad game, just not sure why it's so beloved. I think my main issue is that they claimed to be going the System Shock 2 route--"spiritual successor" is the term I think they used officially--and it was nothing like that.

I tend to come down kind of hard on it, but it's not that bad. Back then I tended to overhype things so I think because it didn't meet my expectations (not even close, to be honest) I sort of come down on it hard.

Honestly my favorite game in the series is Infinite, and I know I'm going to catch a lot of flack for that, but it just dropped the whole pretense of being this innovative game and instead was just a really solid shooter with powers.

Always assumed, much like Halo, it was like cave-men discovering fire.

To folk use to it, just a fucking fire.

To the caveman, it's some sort of magic.

I'm not the biggest Bioshock fan but I think its significantly better than Deathloop.

both have mediocre combat/enemy encounters, but Bioshock has a much more memorable setting and a better story.

Deathloop ended up being a fart in the wind after all the hype from reviewers, and that is coming from an Arkane fan.

No. Deathloop is perhaps the 'Dishonoured' of our generation, which is great, but nothing spectacular.

It certainly isn't a masterpiece like Bioshock and Bioshock: Infinite were.

The latter would have won so many GOTYs if it didn't happen to release on the same year as the two of the three best games of the generation (The Last of Us & GTA V)

lol, good analogy. To someone like me, who had never played System Shock nor heard about the "spiritual successor" talk, I did enjoy BioShock. Strangely enough not mostly thanks to the gameplay. Always found it clunky. But the environment and story made up for it.

BioShock 2 was a much more fun game though.

Infinite was just a giant turd.

I haven't played it yet but that's great to hear that you enjoyed it ! It looks like a exciting game, I like that comparison. Bioshock was one of the anchors of the PS3/X360 gen in terms of what a good title was.

I was complaining about its structure not well defined and stuck in loop. once its clear i started to have fun again. I still give deathloop 8/10. not evergame need to be masterpiece but its one of the finest FPS game current gen. its no Doom or Metro.

Far cry 2 is definitely better than Bioshock.

better gunplay by far - Check

more immersive with no arrow show where to go and you have map on hand - check

Aboslutely incredible weather effect that can only match by STALKER - check

Far cry 2 was one of the most underrated and overhated game of its time. now its timeless classic.

look at newer far cry games. on rail movie trash.

Lol nope. I like where it was headed though. The areas were too small for the loop mechanic not to feel repetitive. Next time, they need bigger areas, more dynamic things happening during day/night or more areas.

The story was going somewhere but ended up going nowhere.

The gunplay was fun but the game as an overall package felt unfinished imo.

Bioshock was a better overall package and is one of the defining games of the 7th gen. I can’t see that for Deathloop.

Going by Arkane's track record, it probably had the gameplay, but not what made Bioshock memorable and the true spiritual successor to System Shock 2: atmosphere and writing.

I dunno, haven't played it yet. Maybe they've improved them since their last attempt at it. Prey 2017 had the atmosphere of a cardboard storage warehouse and the writing of a Dalek's voice synthesizer.

Bioshock is crap, I can't believe the same guys made System Shock 2.
