On some level I think that's the nature of single player games in general, they can be great as they want, but eventually people stop talking about them because it is what it is. Plus when they are multiplat no fanboy bullshit to carry the game.
However in this case, we can at least agree with some statements like
-There is definitely a vocal crowd that likes to argue the game's plot stuff is total grade A bullshit (for the record I like the game and aspects of the narrative, but it's bullshit, let's be clear here)
-Said vocal crowd also involves people who shit on the gameplay, and rightfully so (I don't think it's shit, but it has some glaring misfires)
-It was completely outclassed in terms of big triple A game of that year by The Last of Us.
Throw in things like it doesn't have the wow factor that many feel the original Bioshock has, and there is also a sentiment among some people it's not even the best Bioshock game, much less up to snuff with glorious System Shock 2 (**** no on that one). So forgotten is to be expected, but the other reactions are what they are and they are mostly justified.
Personally I had fun, it looked pretty, and I was invested enough to want to see through the game twice to see how they set everything up. Was it anywhere near media hype? hahahahaha no, but if games had to live up to media hype, I wouldn't like a lot of games, because that's a shallow way to look at things.
