Insomniac Games is looking for a publisher for Sunset Overdrive 2

The open-world setting took everyone by surprise as well. Additionally, this was the first time Insomniac Games was working with Microsoft on a project of this scale—which also happened to be an exclusive—so that added to the hype.

While the game failed to make a big dent commercially, it was still lauded by critics because it was a very unique experience, one that isn't usually found on Xbox One. Since then gamers have been asking Microsoft for a sequel, but it seems like the company hasn't responded to Insomniac Games. In a recent post by the studio on Twitter, it appears that the developer is without a publisher for Sunset Overdrive 2.

If Insomniac Games are looking for a publisher then hopefully Microsoft will step in and finance the project. However, Microsoft may not consider this to be feasible, as Redmond doesn't own rights to the Sunset Overdrive franchise. One of the reasons Insomniac Games went with Microsoft initially was that the company let the Insomniac keep the rights to the franchise.

One of the many criticisms that has been levied against Microsoft is that they don't have enough first-party exclusives. Why would Microsoft want to invest in a game like Sunset Overdrive if it's going to eventually end up on a competing platform? Why not take those funds and invest in a new first-party title or proper exclusive? Sunset Overdrive 2 would be a unique experience but it may not sell well again. All of these factors need to be evaluated when Head of Xbox Phil Spencer and his team sit down and decide to fund projects.

At the same time though, Microsoft is funding PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds even though it might end up on another platform eventually. Microsoft is just publishing it on Xbox One. PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds is an absolutely sensation so it's understandable why the company would want any deal but that shouldn't preclude unique titles like Sunset Overdrive.

Aside from the lack of exclusives, Microsoft usually gets criticized for a lack of variety in their games. Sunset Overdrive 2 would definitely go a long way to address that. Here's hoping that Spencer at least calls Insomniac Games and discusses the future of the franchise. It would be a shame if such a stellar game didn't get a sequel. However, at the end of the day there are numerous business decisions that have to be made.

So what you guys think SW. Should Sony or Microsoft step in and publish this game.

This was a great game, sadly it did not sell well.

People want exclusives, but don't support them when they come out.

Even if SO2 came out, I'm pretty sure it would tank.

I enjoyed the first. Hopefully MS fit the bill.

I want the new Spider-man game, to be honest. Once that's out, you can talk about Sunset Overdrive 2 all you like.

Still believe it wasn't a great idea to make SO a MS exclusive. Insomniac fanbase is PS based, and they practically swore on making multiplat games other than sony owned IP's. Interest for Sunset was so low, they were giving it away for free in numerous Xbox One holiday bundles. Probably to get rid of excessive inventory.

So no surprise MS isn't really interested in publishing a sequel. If a game was selling well during the hottest time of the year. There's no reason to put it in a bundle, without at least a $50 markup. Insomniac would have to do some crazy marketing to spark interest in the IP at this point if they find a publisher.

From what they have shown for the Spider man game, its looks to QTE heavy.

I agree, and Spider-man WILL sell.

I don't mind QTE, I just want a good superhero game and that is, Spider-Man. His new movie already sold me on the game.

I'd like it if the game was on all platforms: PS4, Xbone and PC

I enjoyed the game a lot. Unfortunately I didn't own a Xbone day one or I would've supported it day one. I'm sure the next one will be pretty good as well. But it totally should've been multiplat.

Its sad but true. Many have tweeted this to Phil Spencer I have seen. Not so subtle hint to get off their ass and greenlight this.

The first one was fun as hell. I would definitely get the sequel if made.

I've love a sequel, MS should at least consider it, if not because it didn't sell as well as they wanted, at very least to snag a talented developer from Sony. Could be Insomniac doesn't want MS to publish it, possibly, after all, they might want a larger audience, and the game definitely deserves one.

Maybe they can save the cash from that game to make Sunset Overdrive.

We really don't need another Sunset overdrive.

It's not like Insomniac will suddenly get billions of dollars. Everyone wants their cut.

huh...I could have sworn Sunset Overddrive was gonna come to PC, oh well, not that I cared about the game to begin with.

Not a much better scenario. Pretty much paying people to play SO. In the form of bandwidth and server maintenance costs. For a game that was just over a month old.

See, now, this is a prime example of the problem with MS. They don't care about games, or gamers. If they did, they'd fund this. The fans are asking for it, but MS is ignoring them because the first one didn't sell as well as they wanted. Pure greed.

Ahh that explains why I saw several people earlier on Twitter sending messages to P Spencer about this game, I was like why are they bringing this up in a Tweet about OG Xbox games lol.

Anyways, this is one of my favorite Xbox One games, had a great distinct visual style, was fun with lots of different weapon variety, and had a very cool and underrated 8 player online mode. I'm still not done with the DLC and was planning to get back into it soon it would be nice if Microsoft got involved for a sequel, it's a good franchise imo but they need to do something different for the sequel, it cannot simply be "more of the same" . the first game was fun i just didn't like the tone. I think the developer's attitude was conveyed a little too much in the game that put me off.

It probably won't get made. They're busy with Spiderman and after that is probably another Ratchet and Clank game. If it somehow did come I would like to see it be multiplat to help with sales since the first one tanked. Or if it were to be exclusive, it should be published by Sony for PS4....it would probably sell better on the Playstation platform over Xbox. Most of my Xbox-only friends had no interest in this game when it came out.

You make up conclusions about MS that are half truth and the rest from your butt. Does anything about Sea of Thieves, Crackdown 3 or state of decay 2 scream top ten of 2018 selling game? On one hand they are made fun of because they aren't huge market appeal games, then you cows claim MS doesn't fund anything that isn't a huge market appeal game due to greed. Stop trying to make it seem like you're fair to them. Just post"I hate MS and Xbox" every time. At least that would be honest.

Loved this game, characters cracked me up with some of the lines. Weapons and Amps are so over the top, love mixing up amps with diff. Weapons for crazy results. Then Chaos Squad co-op online is just insane if you have a good group to raise the chaos levels.

Hopefully someone picks this up and publishes it.

I won’t buy it for ANY platform.

The first game sucked and I couldn’t get past the first mission or so. It had the worst controls and gameplay. Just insanely stupid.

It was asking me to do the impossibe. Defend my HQ or something, while grinding on rails and shoot 200 enemies swarming me from every direction.

Who designed this garbage? Especially for the first mission? Too hard and I threw that game in the garbage.
