It could work similarly to the way iPod and the iTunes store works I imagine.

Nintendo could develop a 1Gig or more ROM cartridge that plugs into the GBA slot on the DS/DS Lite that allows you to download games either directly to the cart, via the DS Wi-Fi, or via the Nintendo Wii and it's VC/Store then onto the cart (or whatever).

The cartridge and games would have some kind of protection system (similar to whatever Mac is using to protect tunes on an official iPod) so you cannot copy games and distribute them easily etc, and it would cost a couple of dollars/pounds for each game.

It would help Nintendo fight the current Flash/ROM/pirate market that exists a little since quite a few of those people may actually choose to go the official route if the games are cheap enough and the software/hardware solution is as simpl/intuitive to use and as reliable as all other Nintendo hardware/software.

So, to put it simply: An official Nintendo developed expansion cartridge that plugs into the bottom of the DS/DS Lite and lets you download and play official Nintendo retro titles (and maybe other consoles/handhelds games too) on the go.

I really think it would sell pretty well based on the current VC sales figures etc, and these games are so perfect for the DS layout etc. It would also mean we can have proper backwards compatibility on the DS finally...

It's just a thought...
