This is one of the coolest RPGs I have seen in a long time.

I hope console gamers get to play it as well at some point.

Unique artstyle? It looks like any other progressive indie pastry.

So sad, the many low standard chumps embracing games that came straight from flash games collection CD rom.

@Maroxad: I hope it does come to console but speaking against my own tribe it seems to be a bit too high concept for the general console market.

Low standards?

This game is meant to emulate tabletop rpgs, and the artstyle does this very well.

@ghost_of_phobos: Strategy RPGs seem to be very popular on the Switch.

Especially ones with shipping potential :P

I'm not really a fan of the Paper Mario art style but I can get down on the grid based battle system. Plus, it's only $25 full priced so if you wait on a sale you could get it for half price on a Steam sale.

For real.... Maybe they think it's cool to crap on smaller games like this, but I think it's really counter to what gaming is all about.

Such a tragic mindset.

Sadly this was mine a few years ago. Thank god I abandoned it and got into the "indie scene".

I mean I get it, you hear the word "indie" and you imagine some dudes twisting their mustaches talking about some hipster shit writing in some free-range code sipping their vegan matcha lattes but duuuuuuuuuuuuuuudes it's not like that at all. Indie games are just so much fun.

I haven't looked back. I mean I will snag the big AAA games because they're still kind of fun but they don't steal me away from my independent and small-studio games.

A shame to miss out on all the fun because you're, what? Judgmental? Superficial?

Is this game good or one of those games with some leftest progressive thing that automatically makes them fap to it like it's the second coming?

A lot of game journos are like that. Prob spend too much time hanging around Resetera having their brain turned to rot.

You forgot Hollow Knight, Hades, Celeste, Cuphead, Blasphemous etc. i mean, so many great games. Honestly, if you are not into indies, you may not be a gamer ... but to each of his own indeed.

Anyways ... i love an RPG with a good story and the battle system seems to be fun, not entirely sold on the art style, but im very, very interested on it ... hopefully it will come to Switch.

@madsnakehhh: Is it telling that the majority of games you guys listed are side-scrollers? That in and of itself isn't necessarily bad, and their mechanics are different, but at face value it always makes me think "haven't I done this before?". Of the games listed that I've played, I haven't loved any of them. None of them were bad, but they always seem to come with a qualifier like "pretty good for a small team" or it's art style. And I'm not saying those things don't matter, but I need more. If they could combine the mechanics of 5 of these games into 1, then I might be able to enjoy.

I keep hearing indie is where it's at, and every time I try I'm left wanting. And the AAA games aren't doing it for me either, so I'm just stuck here sulking. It sucks.

Indie games have an enormous advantage over AAA stuff, AAA stuff just feel like they have too many chefs in the kitchen. Everyone wants their opinion in the game, and thus everything becomes homogenous and most things in the game seem to exist for their own sake.

Why does every AAA game need a skill tree? Levelling anyways? (With the exception of BotW who avoided both of these)

Indie games may not be liked by everyone, but they are loved by someone. AAA games as of late, can be enjoyed by pretty much anyone, but who loves them?

Its actually a really clever and fun game, I started playing it yesterday and I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would. Just started chapter three.

That said and judging by the reviewers voice, he/she/whatever probably likes it a little bit more because you can choose your characters sexual preference and for them to be "non binary". Which made me cringe and think "oh no, what am I getting into here.." when I saw it.

Helldivers isnt an indie game. Published by Sony and it is their IP. Arrowhead got progressively more ambitious and their next project is AAA. No handouts (early access) demanded and vain promises given to sucker in the people.

Another review in which the reviewer sounds absolutely desperate to pull out massive praise for functional (I'm being kind) graphics and wax lyrical about amazing storytelling (a f***ing comic strip with art that looks like it was drawn by a kid) literally just because it's an indie game. Don't get me wrong the gameplay might be good but when are we ever going to get tired of this incredibly tedious indie love-in?

And of course another comments section where people absolutely lose their shit completely if anyone dares not to love an indie game, not just this indie game all of them I mean good God do you people not realise how small the team was who made this? I mean, that's what makes it good, right?

Exceptions exist. And I wouldnt consider either GG Strive or Returnal AAA games. Neitehr of those were made for Mass Appeal. And the fairly low sales of Returnal demonstrate just that.

AAA games can be fun. I play FF14 quite a lot. But overall, Indie games, are generally more specialized into a certain demographic.

Hence why they get such high reviews. Because the people reviewing them also happen to be the target audience.

Indie games aren't specialised into any demographic. They are largely complete (and inferior) rip-offs of older masterpieces which gives them the excuse to have pig-ugly graphics and incredibly simplistic gameplay.

Reviewers aren't the target audience they just don't want to upset people like you who have elevated the absolute lowest common denominator of basic gameplay and ugly-as-shit graphics to Godly heights.

Maybe you think it makes you look cool on the internet? Dunno, the whole phenomenon is a mystery to me, a mixture of Emperor's New Clothes and yeah, people are even more stupid than I thought.

I never really said anything about AAA. Plus originally I only said "indies, skip".

Idk how people translate to only AAA matters to me.

Anyhow indies = skip. No reason to keep convincing me.

@blueinheaven: Not inherently, but they are more prone to be. It kinda is the result of a much smaller development team, which means less people who want their ideas thrown into the game. They also dont have the resources to pad a game out with features. So they focus on getting a few features done well.

No one said reviewers are the target audience, but the target audience for the game usually end up being hte types of people to review them. Just like you dont have FPS fan reviewers review RPGs and vice versa.

Lowest common denominator would be trash like Dragon Age Inquisition. Graphics aren't particularly impressive but they serve the aesthetic the game is going for. The gameplay is outright unique, in that it follows the actual lives of your people, and humanizes your characters, and Wildermyths generics, have more gameplay interactions than pretty much any unique party members you find in any other RPG. This is one of the most emergent RPGs I have played in a long time.

People like these games, because quite frankly, this isnt the same recycled trash that adds an abundance of features that ultimately only exist for their own sake.

The gameplay is outright unique and Wildermyths generics, have more gameplay interactions than pretty much any unique party members you find in any other RPG.

People like these games, because quite frankly, this isnt the same recycled trash that adds an abundance of features that ultimately only exist for their own sake.

The graphics are awful, they look like a child designed (and drew) them. And you have a go at DA Inquisition a game with fantastic graphics and intricate lore which was very well reviewed on release. Based on what? Indie hipster defence agenda? God could you possibly be more transparent?

The usual 'smaller development team' defence as though that means we all should give the game a free pass sorry but gamers aren't a charity and your closing comment is absolutely hilarious. The vast majority of indie games are the very definition of 'recycled trash'.

It might be a good game and I might even play it if the price is right in a sale or something (I like turn based games) but like I said above, the hypocrisy surrounding indie titles is just beyond annoying, the guy from IGN claiming 'unique art style, amazing storytelling' OMG he is so full of shit it's oozing out of him and of course there is an absolute legion of indie hipster types like your good self bending over backwards to justify this nonsense.

I'm not buying it. Not now, not ever.

@blueinheaven: So you are judging a game you havent played. Cool

Say all you want about the graphics. But the artstyle, works for the kind of game this is. This is probably the closest simulation I have seen to a proper tabletop RPG.

The storytelling is done in these comic scenes, which are infinitely more charming than the rather standard cutscenes most RPGs have.

I'm judging what I can judge from what I've seen. It hasn't put me off playing it and I'll probably get round to it. I just hate this over enthusiasm for anything indie from reviewers who ironically are supposed to give independent viewpoints but rarely do when it comes to any indie title because they are wary of how they themselves will be judged if praise isn't absolutely overflowing for a small development team.

It's a never-ending cycle that I don't see as healthy for us, the devs in question or even the reviewers who largely have bought into it out of fear of alienating their subs.

You yourself have demonstrated the whole 'us against them' mentality crucifying a fantastic game just because it's a AAA title that wasn't made by a team of 10 in a small office and has excellent graphics which indie fans translate as oh no it looks great the game must be crap.

The whole situation is ludicrous if you stop and think about it for just a minute.
