If you could go back in time and stop one thing from happening in gaming history, what would it be?

I think I would stop the Dreamcast from failing. It would've been great to see Sega be successful with the system. I wonder what a Sega system today would be like. Would Xbox still be in business if it weren't for the Dreamcast? Another thing I would stop from happening is the cancellation of Silent Hills by Konami. I would have loved to see what that game would've looked like. It was was way more inspirational than Death Stranding. I would also stop Shenmue 2 from failing haha. Ok I cheated and gave three. I think out of those three, Silent Hills would be the one. What about you, SW? If you could go back in time and stop one thing from happening in gaming history, what would it be?

I would stop myself from buying the Nintendo Wii U.

I would stop Nintendo from backstabbing Sony with the CD add-on. Was always wondering how the game would be if it was Nintendo PlayStation

Tell Nintendo to learn how to use the internet

I would kill the internet. That way single player games and local multiplayer would rule the land.

I would warned George Locus to never sell Star Wars to Disney cause he'll regret it for the rest of his life and tell him to never let LocusArts die either. They were the true masters of making good Star Wars games.

Also, tell Bioware to never sell their souls to EA and be more independent.

I would tell Konami that Japan will crackdown on pachinko gambling and your focus should stay on video games.

Tell the engineers at Microsoft that the Xbox 360 has a design flaw before it is released. Would have prevented the so-called Red Ring of Death from existing and hurting the Xbox brand.

I'd stop me from buying an imported 3do which I paid over $1000 for.

SEGA leaving the console market.

Probably stop the 32X from happening. SEGA CD was a money sink too, but I don't think I could sacrifice its library.

I'd also be curious to see what would have happened if Sonic Xtreme was able to come out for the Saturn, and especially if Chris Sen and Ofer Alon had made it in time to that infamous meeting with SEGA's president before having to scrap everything for a far worse engine.

For Nintendo to acquire Rare.

Rare did ask if Nintendo want to buy Rare and they did beg them to but Nintendo rejected Rare's offer. Oh well.

Stop SquareSoft from merging with Enix.

@Renegade_Fury: I love Segas idea of the genesis, cd, and 32X. I would like to see the alternate universe where that concept took off. The biggest negative there was the giant power brick for each console. I feel like that add on concept could work these days in a far more elegant way.

@Renegade_Fury: I think that Sonic Xtreme would have sucked no matter what. The Saturn's hardware was too weak to deliver a truly great 3D experience. Look at the videos from the unfinished game. Dull graphics, dull worlds and a 20 fps frame rate.

Many good suggestions here. Yes, Sega should have stayed in the hardware business. There is nothing wrong with Microsoft and Sony, but Sega was just cooler.

I also want to change the direction of Silent Hill. The first game was amazing, so why couldn't the rest of the series be like that, and where is the series now?

Finally, I wished that Resident Evil 4 didn't happen. It should have been a horror game similar to 1-3. As should no. 5 and 6.

Killing whoever first thought of founding EA...

Imagine a world where games work properly at release and without huge day 1 patches... that's the kind world I want to live in!

@pmanden: Maybe, but I'd want to try it out regardless, especially the variation that was built using the NiGHTS engine if Yuji Naka hadn't prohibited its development. I just think having a Sonic title would have gone a long ways in the west since it's what propelled the Genesis into the spotlight. That, and if SEGA America hadn't made so many awful decisions regarding the Saturn, such as its surprise E3 launch, and SEGA of Japan completely ignoring everyone else's input in general.

@goldenelementxl: Yeah, having 3 power bricks is just not a practical setup even now. I tend to only leave my SEGA CD attached to my Genesis for that reason. Still, as a kid, I thought making the Genesis "more powerful" was the coolest concept ever, lol.

Introduce online to consoles earlier.

Earlier than the 1980s? Home consoles did have online use before the video game crash as I remembered.

Lastly turn consoles back into solely gaming machines not entertainment boxes.

Ever since then, fans of both companies’ franchises consider the merger to be the outset of the mediocrity that has followed when compared to the powerhouse status both companies had enjoyed in generations prior.

I still think it’s nuts that technically the old Square Co. is gone; it’s officially dissolved.

@ajstyles: Just curious if there are any Zelda games you do like? I ask because while I do absolutely agree with scores being inflated at times (scores are inflated in general nowadays), it is an influential franchise that has had some amazing game design over the years.

That seems extreme. Don't play the games if they aren't for you but denying entertainment for others seems selfish.

So many things that I would change if I went back in time but it would be a long list.
