I'm having a hard time getting behind the Xbox One. I love the launch lineup, and I think I'd have a lot more fun with it than the ps4, which I decided to buy instead... The problem with everything Microsoft has to offer at launch reminds me exactly what the Xbox 360 did on day one and never did again.
I was one of the first to line up for the 360, finding myself super excited for the then unique and unfamiliar Call of Duty 2, plus my favorite game developer Rare had two launch games to offer -- both of which I absolutely loved despite how flawed they were in Kameo and Perfect Dark Zero.
The Playstation 3 launch looks eerily similar to the Playstation 4's: A solid looking, graphically intensive first person shooter, and a bunch of 3rd party games (Ps3 -- Resistance Ps4 -- Killzone).
On the other hand, Ryse looks incredible, and Dead Rising 3 looks like completely bananas and out of this world zany. Throw in a new Killer Instinct and a 20$ Panzer Dragoon homage, and this lineup looks like a dream come true for me... Maybe Rare's going to dip into their vast array of IP, and the system might end up being more than a COD/Halo/Forza box.....
But they've done this before. In 2005, we had a launch lineup filled with promises for new franchises and old... But after they didn't sell a billion copies, Microsoft scrapped all of them. We got our annual shooters with a new Halo coming every other year, a Gears of War here and there.. And the rare exclusive gems like Alan Wake, but those releases were far and few in between.
The fact of the matter is that most of the games I ended up playing on my 360 were available on ps3, while the ps3 lineup got flooded with new exclusive titles after a slow first three years..
I'd love to believe Microsoft is going to buck the trend of not offering enough first and second party content, and actually stick with their commitment to developing new games and ideas, but after watching my beloved 360 shift from the console I thought I was purchasing, I can't lay down my hard earned money without seeing this continue for more than a launch day.
Despite the inferior first party offering from Sony, my money's going to them based solely on the fact I'm inclined to believe I know what I'm getting. I'd rather be purchasing an Xbox One, but I can't bring myself to do it.
