Sorry backlog. Greenman gaming had it for 20% off, so I figured why not!
Who else is playing DQXI this weekend?

The reviews on steam are at around 90%, looks like a hit. Except for this one moron complaining about being unable to re-map movement keys. Lol just get a gamepad already.
I bought it, but it is too slow and linear. I don't really like it that much. I like to be able to pick what I want to do and when I want to do it. (not that it is surprising as DQ games are always linear)
It sometimes amazes me how much I have changed as a gamer. A few years ago I would have loved this, but now I am addicted to games that I get to make more choices.

How far in are you?
iirc, most of the dragon quest games are very much linear, at least to begin with, but they start to open up when you're further along.
I've never played a Dragon Quest, but this looks cool... would get it on Switch.
Why?
Why what?

I know. I have played them all. (I am 3 hours in)They open up, but not in the ways that are meaningful. The combat is always going to be slow and boring imo. And as far as choice goes, it never will have meaningful choice like I see in more open world games.
I just finished with Octopath Traveler for example. I got to pick who to use and when to do whatever parts I wanted to do. I could even not do whole chunks of the main story If I did not want to. In Disgaea games, I can change the way the entire game is played and do things the way I want to do them. In Bethesda games, you can kinda just do what you feel like doing. Same with Zelda BOTW.
Some people enjoy traditional linear games, I just have changed as a gamer too much for them. No fault of the game, it is just not really my speed anymore. It is funny cause I find myself surprised by how much I am addicted to making my own choices in games now.
Dragon Quest Builders is my current favorite DQ (I bought Ps4 for that game). The reason is that I can stop and make whatever I want to make. That choice element really heled me along.
I'm playing it now and it's absolutely fantastic. I loved DQ8 though.
This is the kind of game you have to know it's what you want going into it. It's totally old school turn based RPG with modern visual enticements which is a dream come true for me but may not be for others.
Why what?
Get it for the Switch? (I am assuming you have a PS4 or PC)
No I have neither a PS4 or gaming PC :)
I'd prefer it to come to XB1, but I doubt that's going to happen.
@hrt_rulz01: Yeah I’d love to see this come to the Xbox One as well but yeah not going to happen. I’m really hoping that the Switch version isn’t too far away however not hearing anything about it yet is a little concerning.
@blueinheaven: Yep, I like old school rpgs so much I was actually kind of bummed when I saw autosaves happening during the tutorial lol.
Did you turn on any of the draconian quest options?

I didn't turn any of those on and kind of wish I did now, the game seems kind of easy apart from one particularly bad boss I came up against. Probably doesn't help that I ran into quite a few metal slimes which racked up the exp so I might be a bit overlevelled.
Loving the game though, 30 hours in and still a long way to go it seems.
I'm playing it right now and it is very good so far. I like the little changes they made. It promises strong things in this game's future.
It has everything to be a big contender for GOTY in my books alongside Celeste.
Dragon quest is one of my all time favourite franchises

Yeah, I only went with the "enemies are super strong" option, but a replay with everything turns on sounds kind of fun.
@appariti0n: have the strong enemies and no fleeing, the difficult feels just right so fare(13 hours in). Finished ni no kuni 2 not long ago and that game was wayyy to easy so happy with a challenge!
I just ordered Ni No Kuni 2 got a good price on it so into the backlog it goes lol but wasn't there a difficulty patch for people who found the game too easy?
One of the reasons I bought it was because of the new hard and expert modes. Did you play it before they released that or are the new modes still too easy?
This game is turn based, no? While I don't hate em I have a hard time getting into them initially. Still tryna get past the first 2 hours of persona 5 since black Friday 2017..
@djoffer: Yes, I put Ni no Kuni 2 down because it was way too easy. Will likely jump back in on one of the higher difficulties they added at some point.

Hey bud so you're able to select a difficulty before starting Dragon Quest XI? How's the game been so far in terms of exploration and story?
No voice acting is a turn off. Unless something changed.
US version took so long because they added full voice acting. Take THAT japan!
@dagubot: I’m only about 5 hours in, so far the story is pretty cliche jrpg fare. You’re the chosen one destined to save the world from great evil, etc. Not that I mind it tho.
Pretty linear so far, although each map, whether it’s out in the world or in town always has a bunch of things to find, be it treasures, medals, crafting mats, etc.
Why what?

How the hell don't you have a PS4 but do an Xbone 1?
@dagubot: well it’s pretty linear in the sense that you are usually locked to each region due to lvl difference and other stopping blocks. Just got a travel options option( don’t want to spoil anything) that allows for some small detours like FF7 etc. The story is great imo, starts out pretty cliche but have some nice twists and definitely interesting enough to keep me hooked.
There is no difficult option, but you can set some restriction when you start the game( pretty hidden, I had to restart the because I missed it) which you then can turn off if it becomes to much. But you can’t turn them back on though.. I have chosen harder monsters and no fleeing from combat, that is basically hard mode. It feels really good and challenging without being a grind or dark soul difficulty! I like a game where you wipe every now and then when you faces bosses, without it stupidly hard. Think I had to grind 15-20 minutes at one point to lvl up so I could manage a boss:)
@blueinheaven: was before any patch, might have to give it another spin once the dlc gets released, the game itself is great fun:)
