Laser is dead. RIP.

As a more retrospective thread for system wars, did most of you play both the PS2 & original XBOX? what are your thoughts on these 2 consoles?

Buy another laser? Rented an Xbox for Halo and played dead or alive on a mates one, that is it. Never bought either of them back in the day, nor did I buy any the gen before that. I had a dreamcast for SA 2, plus Shenmue 1 and 2, and let us not forget the godly Grandia 2.

I played an Xbox and always wanted them because you could add your own music to certain games and Halo, I had a ps2 though but mainly played THUG/THPS 2. I was like 8 and free look was a struggle for me at the time. The only FPS games I played were Quake and Duke nukem 3d until 360 days.

Had both PS2 and original Xbox.

I played virtually every original xbox exclusive released. I really enjoyed it's original and daring exclusives during those early days. Of course I had a PS2 as well. One of the best systems ever created.

These days however, I've chosen to use my PC to help re-live many of those experiences. It's a bit of hassle and not everything works 100% but more of less it gets the job done without any extra hardware to clutter up my entertainment space.

I'd be overjoyed if Sony updated PSN with a complete PS2 digital store front with PS5. I don't even care if I had to pay a couple dollars, if I had a complete collection of games to choose from, I'd ditch my wonky PC fix I've been using up to this point.

PS2 GREATEST CONSOLE EVER. Xbox was cool I guess, had fun with Jade Empire and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. Very memorable games and especially for splinter cell was pretty amazing how light plays a huge part in stealth. PS2 has just about every genre in existence probably and I spend few hundred hours in many games with PS2.

If you have no qualms about it you could try a free mcboot. They are all over amazon. All you need is it and a hard drive for USB attachment. Download ONLY the games you own to not pirate and use it that way. But this way you can load games and have your library at your fingertips without having to worry about the laser dying in return. I know a base PS2 is cheaper. I'd buy one now though. I think they will go up in price even though they are plentiful in the wild. I say that because of the retro craze happening across the world.

I was cleaning out my game room the other day and noticed my brand new in the box PS2 was missing. I'm bummed I have no idea what happened to it. I also noticed my collectors edition Zelda Majora's mask with the skull kid figure is missing too. I have so much stuff it's hard to keep track of everything. After reorganizing I have a better idea where everything is.

I have another PS2 that I use often but I think it's on it's way out. It keeps making funny noises and stuff. It's hard to find a PS2 in good condition. My local game stores sell out of them fast.

I have an original Xbox too but I like playing og xbox games on the Xbox One via backwards comparability.

I owned a PS2 and my neighborhood friend owned an Xbox. We would just go to each other’s houses to play. I loved my original PS2 though but it died out years ago. In recent years I purchased a PS2 and some games at pawn shops. Lots of nostalgia when playing on it ?.

Ps2 was amazing!

I had the Xbox and my brother had the ps2 lol we would just play on each other consoles all the time. Even the GameCube was a good console, that was an amazing gen.

Just find someone to repair it. Disc drives are cheap.

I had an XboX because I wanted to support competition. Didn't get a PS2 until its final years. On the Xbox I remember playing multi-player Wolfenstein, Phantasy Star Online collection, and a rally game which let me put my songs from my own collection on it. Oh yeah and Morrowind. Fun times.

I had both and enjoyed them quite a bit. I was really sceptical when the Xbox first launched but finally decided to pick it up just before Halo 2 launched because I wanted to see what all the hype was about and really fell in love with the system and a good number of its games.

@Shewgenja: Or go to any flea market and pick up a used one for about 5 or 10 bucks. They’re flooded with em. They’ll probably throw in a few games of your choice as they’d be thrilled to get rid of stock that’s been sitting there for years.

I had them both and liked them both. The OG Xbox was a funky and interesting system, unlike its brodude successor. Still, the disc drive kept dying on me and most of the games were on PC, so I eventually gave up on it. Still have my launch PS2 though

I want another PS3 to take advantage of their digital PS1/PS2 classics, many pretty cheap, and a great section.

I had both as a kid, technically the ps2 was my dads but all he played was atv off road fury and tiger woods lol, over the coarse of the gen we had 40+ games for it.

On the xbox og had about 15 games, played the og xbox more technically just because halo 2 MP.

I remember the reason i wanted an xbox was after playing ninja gaiden at my buddies house. The graphics and fps of that game was mind blowing at the time on consoles.

My og xbox has never not worked, ive gone through 3 ps2s and no longer have one. Id say ps2 had better catalouge, but was a much weaker console spec wise, had horrible online, ( really only scum or bf2 was even playable).and those lasers are cheap bs

A few people said about repairing the PS2, and I agree... Should be a fairly easy fix.

@boxrekt: same. If sony would offer a sensible way to play ps2 on a modern console I would stop trying to emulate it on pc.

PS2 is clearly the best console that gen, but like every gen with Xbox, I feel both are worth having, and so I have owned both.

I still have the PS2 I bought like 10 years ago when still new in Game Stop, but I do not own an OG Xbox and haven't for 15 years, of course I had a 360 for BC and now a One for BC.

Sadly every other used games stores in valley still sell PS2 and GS doesn't.

PS2 era was the best era in gaming for me so many classics not only on PS2 but especially on PC. I miss the days when the Battlefield series was at it's peak aka Battlefield 2 days and when RE4 and F.E.A.R. came out 2005 in general was the best year for gaming to me.

Ps1 and Ps2 are 100% worth buying over and over. Some many great games (Tons of JPRGs).

Ps4 is complete trash in comparison. Sad really.

My original first gen PS2 still works perfectly, even tho its been in use since launch, almost 20 years!

I also had PS2 super slim, the really tiny version of the console, but it broke down only after a year or so. Not very durable...

Also got the original Xbox (first gen model). It tends to misbehave a lot so i have to kick it around to make it run games. Thankfully most games are 360 BC, but there are lot of good OXB games you can only play on the OXB, such as The Warriors and Mafia.

@heirren: Go to any flea market or pawn shop. They’ll have about 30 on the floor with more in back. They aren’t rare at all.
