Excluding the fanboys because that's obvious, there are some people that act as if Microsoft have not been releasing many owned first party IP games whether built by their internal studios or otherwise. So i made the following comparison chart.

I really don't see a big difference here. The Xbox clearly had the upper hand the first two years with first party and then afterwards everythings kind of even. E3 will show us how 2017 will play out for both Microsoft and Sony, but otherwise i'm not seeing this widening gap on first party releases. The other complaint, diversity, doesn't really show up here as an issue either.
I mean I guess you could argue 2016 since the top 3 games are "technically shooters" on paper but they don't play the same.
Even the Halo/Gears/Forza statement doesn't really work here anywhere except possibly 2015, but that makes a bit of sense since all 3 of them came out the same year and you still had two other ips to play, one containing tons of rare games.
