Hope a Day 1 patch fixes this - that's unacceptable performance

35-40FPS at 2560x1080 (that's less than 1440p, for those who hate maths)

Core i7-7700K, RTX 2080, and 16GB of RAM ...using maximum settings and TAA

When you compare with the performance of Death Stranding on PC which also uses the Decima engine, this is an odd result.

I imagine Digital Foundry will have something to say - at least if it's not addressed in a Day 1 patch

*edit* here's a more in-depth early technical view

*edit 2* - Digital Foundry video

IGN, of all places, has a more detailed analysis, done by Durante (the guy famous for fixing the original PC port of Dark Souls).

I already bought HZD on PC over at Steam and will return to this thread when I find out how it runs. But the IGN was more accurate in that regard.

If I'm correct Death Strandings settings barely scale above the console version.

This looks like it is adding new stuff (reflections, cloud rendering, foliage movement) that simply wasn't in the original.

I'm going to read the Durante article now.

Yeah that looks pretty bad considering the very low recommended specs they listed.

Same here. This is an unfortunate side effect of early reviews and tight dev schedules.

Heh. I'd have docked the fucker a point for that (then potentially added it back later if it gets better).

...getting good performance out of HZD is more involved and finicky than perhaps it should be – with several in-game options being actively detrimental to performance or perceived smoothness in non-obvious ways, and an unusually high load being placed on the PCIe bus.

...While the two games are of course substantially different in their load profiles, it is hard not to compare this port to the very recently released Death Stranding, which is free of these more obscure performance concerns and offers DLSS 2.0 for significantly better image stability at lower GPU performance requirements.

DId you seriously expects optimized port from console only developers? The original game was specifically built around PS4's limitations so obviously it won't scale and then there could also be 'business' reasons. Notice these Sony games doesn't really go above there console settings apart from resolution and FPS? This is the same sh*t MS pulled with Forza on PC.

The sad truth of being a dev that only works on one platform.

Guerrilla has some experience now though. Hopefully that will make them even better at what they do.

As above. Stick to console for exclusives. GS reviews are a joke, always feel PC equivalents should review higher with better FPS etc, but when it runs crap, 9/10.

@pc_rocks: ugh Forza on PC pisses me off. MS does a shit job with their store and apps. Period. Following a recent argument about it on here, where I was directed to their new app... no. I thank folks for the tip, but it still sucks and is glaringly inferior to Steam and GoG.

Issues remain: not true full screen. Their app refuses to see all the XBox games I have purchased from the MS store - so I it's basically pointless. The best way to see all my games is to open the store itself... The download speed indicator is... wow so wrong. I don't know why, but it's a mess. Variable refresh rate/adaptive sync doesn't work in Forza Horizon 4 and is broken in FH3 (it varies... but within weird frame caps and seemingly poorly tracking the internal render framerate. FH3 is also basically no longer supported, as their crash issues haven't been addressed and there have been no patches in years, so it's FH4 or bust at this point). For some reason adaptive sync seems to work ok in some Windows store games but not others - no matter what settings I turn on or off.

If you take a screenshot using Forza's tool, it is 1) stupid slow and awkward, 2) doesn't save anywhere that you can find it - the official and only way to access the photos is by sharing them online, and then using the Forza app to re-download them. 3) they save in 1080p. No matter what your resolution is. The best way to take a screenshot is to enter photo mode, but instead of using photo mode turn off all the default blurred motion effects and bullshit (which aren't turned on in the actual game) and then from there, while it's paused, press win+g. So in other words, if you just want an unadulterated screen of a fun moment, you need to press a series of buttons and leave active gameplay. It should be a single button press, without disrupting gameplay, period.

ok huge side rant over. I love FH4. It's my favorite racing game right now (actually one of my favorites period). But jesus it's a janky experience in some ways; compared to a game on literally any of the other stores besides Epic and Blizzard which have their own mess of missing features and restrictions.

And some shills kept insisting that the devs deserve the $30 premium on PC vs. PS4 because they worked hard of the port, lol.

Confused, GS was struggling at 1080p, while that IGN one looked alright at 4K performance wise.

Finished it on PS4 years ago. It's a very LONG game. I would only double dip for a expansion, but as I can't port my saves from PS (can I? ) I don't think it's worth it. Just there are more games in my backlog to play than replaying this sandbox.

@nepu7supastar7: it's not about being spoiled, IMO. One of the main selling points of this would be to experience better performance from the existing game. The visuals themselves don't improve much. Plus, my thread is more about relative performance than absolute - you could debate whether 30FPS is adequate, but I see the issue and my thread being about poor performance relative to what it should have (i.e., the hardware at play here is dramatically beyond a base PS4, while the resolution bump is modest - so the expectation would be substantial performance gains)

@nepu7supastar7: um no, the original game ran at rock solid 30 fps. 35-40 fps is actually a downgrade, as it's not steady.

PC gamers = spoiled

Consolites = blind/have incredibly low standards.

HZD is 30fps on both PS4 and PS4 Pro.

I think for an action game 30 is too low. That's my opinion. I still played it on PS4, and it was one of the better 30fps action games on the platform. Still, I will be adjusting the settings in such a way that I get at least 60fps at 1440p. If I can't I will just refund the game.

We'll see how it performs when it officially launches.

So ok this doesn't make sense:

a) A 2080ti is getting 83.3 average at ultra settings 1440p

b) a 2080 is getting 35-40 at ultra settings 1080p (21:9)

Either it's a or b, not both.

Honestly the game's performance is exactly in line of what I was expecting.

If your source was correct though, than holy hell. The performance would be afwul, and way below what I was expecting.

Durante shared the 1440p benchmarks for a 2080ti:

Kotaku AUS was pretty positive too.

@R4gn4r0k: I'm not sure about the german link. I'll pull that. It agrees with GS at 1080... but the lower card results are nonsensical, frankly.

Durante's 1440p results look perfectly fine. Well... IDK a 2080TI should do better than that probably. But certainly tolerable

Yeah personally I'm looking forward to something like 60fps from a 1080ti at 1440p

I'll also be replaying it at 4K some day (with stronger, future hardware) and want to see the game at 4K/60.

@xantufrog: thing is like: if it were a bad port it wouldn't scale to higher resolutions or differing settings. But according to Durante's test and benchmarks it absolutely does scale :)

There are some glitches, as adressed in the Australian Kotaku article.

Still looking forward to trying this the day after tomorrow.

Or don't worry about it, don't **** with anything, and still get better performance than a console with the auto settings.

Tweaking is for people who want something specific. It's an option. I know that may be an unfamiliar term for you.

@xantufrog: Well looking at the cpu usage of this game. Quad core cpu's with HT are hitting 88-90% average usage on a clean test system. So on a normal system with stuff running in the back ground your going to have stuttering issues and fps drops when your cpu usage hits 98%+.

The game will use upto 12 threads on a 16 thread cpu averaging 45% usage. Even a plain 6 core cpu only averages 85% usage

Arstechnica.

"Serious performance woes on my high-end rig. My best testing PC sports an i7-8700K CPU (overclocked to 4.8GHz), an Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti GPU Founder's Edition (overclocked using EVGA X1 software), 32GB DDR4-3000 RAM, and an NVME solid-state hard drive. This rig has a lot of headroom to spare in order to get most 3D games to hit a mostly steady 60fps refresh at resolutions nearing 4K (2160p).

Indeed, the pre-release build of HZD hits 60fps on my best machine... but this requires a considerable downgrade to somewhere around 60 percent of 4K, which can be toggled in an in-game menu. The game includes an automatic resolution-scaling system, which drops the pixel count in order to lock to your preferred frame rate of choice. When I leave the game at "high" settings (not maxed-out, graphically, but close to it), this automatic 60fps slider bumps the pixel count down to roughly 60 percent, as well. That result lines up with other resolution tests on the same system; 1440p, or roughly 44 percent of 4K, runs at 68fps on average with the same "high" settings preset.

Since the PC port's resolution-scaling system doesn't borrow from the much ballyhooed "checkerboard rendering" found on PS4 Pro games, the results at this scaling level look pretty blurry—and arguably worse than a $300 console (which, admittedly, maxes at 30fps).

Serious performance woes on my medium-spec laptop: In testing the game on a 2018 HP Omen 15, with an i7-8750H CPU and an Nvidia GTX 1070 Max-Q, getting the game to stick to a 60fps refresh with all graphics settings turned down to "original" (meaning, roughly "medium") is also difficult to achieve.

The issue isn't just that our average frame rate on this rig at 1080p hovers at around 48fps. There's also something seemingly broken about CPU optimization, which leads to some serious frame time spikes and audio stuttering, whether because a cut scene is playing out, a wave of NPCs in a town appear, or—worst of all—you're doing standard HZD stuff, like attacking enemies with your spear. (This kind of frame time spiking happened on my high-end rig as well if the automatic frame rate setting wasn't enabled.)"

The original ran on like a 7850-7870, cannot even do more than 68 there or there abouts on even my rig. I am really not confident that this performance patch will do anything. Think I'll just skip it.

Turns out "Original" preset is console(Pro) settings and at 4K/60 it runs flawlessly on a 2080 Ti.

Loading Video...

Maybe the extra graphical features broke the performance of the game?....

Native 4K at 2x the framerate same settings as console... Not much but I will take it.

It really isn't much when a 2080 Ti is like 3x the horsepower of the PS4 Pro's GPU.

Another reason why PC gaming sucks. Poor optimization.

Does that mean the other 99% of the time when the game runs better on PC, PC gaming is better?

Going to assume you don't reply to this question.

Dropping 2 grand to download drivers, tweak settings and pray for patches sounds like a blast!

As opposed to never getting a patch and always running the crappy looking/running version of games? Can'tsoles.

Is a $500 PC better than a console? Haha no.

It objectively is. PC is better than a PRO. It has better gfx, performance, online, and wins at GS and MC.

Even broken HZD runs better than on PRO.
