How much of early wii success is due to Zelda?

Maybe, but it was wii sports that most were interested in, it sold more than zelda in japan where it was sold seperately. Zelda's success in the states and everywhere is due to the fact that there is really nothing else to buy. Apparantly the ratio between wiis sold and zelda sold was greater than that of the n64 and mario 64. The N64 launched with 3 games! Judge that how you will.

I did it with the revolver in the Library...

I think it is. But if Nintendo keep leaning on 1st party games the Wii will go the same way as the Gamecube

The Wii's success is due to it being fun and appealing to everyone from 6-65+... not because of one, niche market title.

I believe both Wii Sports and Zelda are responsible.

Hardcore / Mature Gamer: Zelda

Casual / Kids / Non-gamer: Wii Sports.

You're right it isnt Zelda, its a whole lot more.  I have TP on the GC and its fun but its not a game that can be played over and over.  You have people over, you play some bowling or tennis, not zelda.  You got 20  minutes to spare, you play some baseball or boxing.  Something you can play with your mom or dad, definetly not zelda.  Some you and a significant other can play together, not zelda.  Don't get me wrong I love TP and the whole Zelda franchise but the essence of the Wii is not zelda.  That's the whole reason its called Wii and not "Sitting alone in my bedroom playing against computer AI"

Zelda is reason for Wii's success among the hardcore, but Wii's infiltration of pop-culture and the casual and non-gamer market is due to Wii Sports.

I would say that 20% of all Wii buyers bought the system so soon because of Zelda.  The rest, Wii Sports and Wii Play.  Those are the real system sellers, and the real GOTYs.

Not much. It is on the Gamecube after all.

I've played Rayman more than Zelda. I've played Wii Sports more than both of them combined. And I've played DBZ: BT2 more than all three of them combined.

Yeah, there was no games besides Zelda at launch, alright.

MP3, SMG, and SSBB will help it this year. It's a good year... and Wii sports/Zelda combo was pretty devastating.

Zelda probably had little to no part in getting the word of the Wii out there.  Wii's popularity is because of the wii remote novelty and Wii Sports.

Zelda of course helped alot but if they did not launch Zelda they would have had another huge hit. It is the same with Resistence for the PS3, there will always be 1 big title.

I had pre-ordered Zelda two years before it came out. I had originally planned to get the WIi maybe a year or two after launch. When i heard TP was now a launch title, all that changed, and i had to get a Wii asap. I'm sure there are many others like me who bought a Wii earlier rather than later because of Zelda.

Zelda is what is helping sell Wii to the hardcore market.

But, as others have pointed out, the majority of Wii's success is not due to Zelda.  Especially in Japan, where Wii Sports is a bigger hit than Zelda.

right I get the joke............ I know like 4 people who got the Wii for Zelda and they are old school Sheep from way back so the console was already sold to them. Then I know about 12 people who got it 'cos it sounded cool they dont even have Zelda so basicaly what Im saying is unless you can show me some proof of a REALY high Zelda attach rate then "Sellda" is BS.

If you look at japan's sales Wii sports and Wii play are by far the highest selling games for the wii.

And i think Wii sports would probably be the highest seller in the US if it wasnt boxed in

Zelda was just an additional great compliment to Wii launch, but there are 3 major factors that push early Wii success: 1) Price 2) WiiSport included (free game yet the game is fun and accessible) 3)New controller scheme (innovative and different)

Every time the Wii is praised in the general media, It's wii sports that is talked about, not zelda. Dr. Phil, Conan, and Colbert did not play Zelda on TV. None of the news stations did a report on zelda. They all did Wii Sports.

True, but I think Wii Sports has done a lot. And even if Wii Play is bad, I think it'll pull in some more casuals. Also, SSBB is one of the biggest Nintendo titles out there so I think that's gonna definitely get an extra million sales for the Wii.

But yes, Zelda helped a lot. But think about it, all consoles need great launch games to sell well. The 360 had Kameo and PDZ (I didn't like it, but I know a lot of people who did) and the PS3 had Resistance.

Surprisingly little, it just shows that what were once deemed as 'big hitters' are relatively insignificant in the grand scheme of things. People can harp on all they want about Zelda, MGS4 and Mass Effect but these games only appeal to a rather niche audience.

I think that Halo will sell xbox some systems but MGS4 is not as big I dont really know to many people that want to sneak around in splinter cell or metal gear as opposed to blowing things up suicide style alot of "Wee-Wee's" early success is contributed to Zelda the "Wee-Wee" averages 3.5 games sold per console and Zelda is in 1 of those 3 games per console.

Honestly, not much.  To the casual, Zelda really isn't all that appealing, and if anything, casuals will buy it for Wii Sports.  Only hardcore fans of the Zelda series tend to buy it for Zelda, and many hardcore fans of Nintendo were planning on buying it anyway.

Also, Nintendo dosen't "figure out a way to screw over their fans with poor 3rd party support and delay after delay of first party."  By definition, 3rd party support is out of Nintendo's hands.  The Wii is showing so far a lot of 3rd party support, especially considering how lacking the GC was in 3rd party support.

not a lot imo. The Wii isn't a huge success with hardcore gamers, it's a huge success with Newbies to gaming and to a lesser extent casuals. Zelda is not as big a factor as you think. Besides, Metroid Prime, Smash Brothers, and Mario Galaxy are on the way!
