Like if you bought about 7 to 10 games and a couple rentals here and there for the console the entire generation, would you regret buying the console in the first place?

Of course there is quality and no one can deny it, but would you fork over hundreds of $$$ for the opportunity to play like 5 or 7 great games?

Just wondering what SW view on this is. And this is for secondary platforms. No gamer will just buy 7 to 10 games on their primary platform of gaming choice.

(I want an Xbox One but I only want Halo: MCC and Halo 5 currently and I don't really see any other games coming out exclusively for Xbox that will make me NOT regretting the console in the long run). :(

One. That one game has to be absolutely amazing, and sell me on the console, though.

To wit:

Super Mario 3D Land for the Nintendo 3DS
Persona 4 Golden for the PlayStation Vita
Mario Kart 8 for the Wii U

............... well, I'm sure the PS4 will get something eventually.

Regardless, I think I have made my point.

I bought both an Xbox 360 and PS3 last gen, bought all my multiplats on the Xbox 360 as it was a superior system with better online, used my PS3 mostly to play PS2 games (because PS2's don't play on HDTVs without looking like shit, and my PS3 was fully BC), but I did buy about couple dozen exclusives for it. Many turned out to be shit I could have gone without, but there were a few gems in there, and to be honest you really don't know until you try whether it turned out to be worth it. Still, I don't regret it.

But, if you did buy a system and only buy 6 games for it, it would appear you didn't even really try to have a good time. You really have less to complain about the system for and more about your own commitment to gaming.

Usually I like 3-5 super games or I regret it years later.

My regret usually is that I shouldn't have bought a launch console if all the games I like come out a few years after launch...which is what's been going on lately with my Xbone and to a smaller extent my PS4 and Wii U.

Still, I have my PC and last gen consoles and I've been through this early adopter stuff tons of times before.

For me? Using the PS3 as an example.....

UC 1, UC2, UC3

KZ2, KZ3

FIFA, NCAA Football, NBA Live

That makes 8. ;)

I honestly regretted getting an Xbox One until they started updating it. Now i use it for everthing. Netflix, Youtube, NFL, EPSN, playing games, music/video streaming, etc. Cant believe PS4 still dont have these.

I just run my 360 through my XB1 now just to catch up on my back catalog while still having access to the XB1 interface.

Awesome setup.

It's hard to say for sure, but probably around two great games. Fire Emblem and Bravely Default made me not regret getting a 3DS.

At least 10 first party exclusives. The number of third party games is irrelevant. After a solid 10 first party games then the console itself isn't a mistake.

Honestly, just 1, if it's absolutely amazing and has the quality and gameplay that puts it on a level that isn't close to being matched or duplicated by competition.

if we are just talking about good or above average games then It needs to be a lot more, like at least 10 really great games.

Three seems like a pretty good number to me. Buying a console for just one game is silly, even if that game's GOAT. I wouldn't buy a Wii U if Super Smash Bros. was literally the only game on the console, even at the $200 refurbished price point.

If it's something really special and has a huge amount of reply value, then I can justify getting a console for a cheap price for just one game. Bloodborne would likely be an example of that for the PS4, but there's plenty of other games to make it even more worth it to me.

It depends on more than just the number of games you own for the console. I think the amount of exclusive titles lost, especially if you own a second console factors into regret. The continual support for the console forms my perception of the console. And overall experience with the console also creates a lasting perception of the console. For example, buying a 360 for BioShock and Mass Effect in 2007 seemed like a smart idea if you had to choose between buying a PS3 and a 360; however, both later came to PS3 making the reason for purchasing a 360 in the first place invalid. The 360 had many of these redacted reasons to buy it; yes, there were still some very good games that remained exclusive (Alan Wake, Gears, Viva Pinata, Lost Odyssey, Kameo, and Crackdown), but when I chose to leave a console behind at my parent's house when I moved, it was the 360. Microsoft also seemed to give up on supporting their console with new IPs earlier into the generation. Finally, I didn't have to unlock useful features like Netflix on my PS3 that were hidden behind an XBL paywall.

I can justify buying a console for just one really great game and I have done it before. I bought a PS2 just for God of War.

In theory just one. I all depends if you get what you feel is worth it.

But luckily we tend to get a boatload of games throughout a gen ^^

Pretty sure that ignores the used game market. At least I hope. Buying barely 2 games a year is pathetic.

i think i only bought like 5 games on my n64....

mario kart 64 battle mode was played for hundreds of hours with friends...thats all we played.

for single player mario 64 was jizz worthy.

games like banjo kazooie and zelda were just icing on the cake.

its kinda sad but I agree. mgs4 justified my ps3 purchase. but 360 had SOOO many great games that won it that gen in my opinion. gears of war, halo 3, superior RDR, superior fallout 3.

To me the rule is simple: there needs to be enough games I want and can't get on platform I already own that their combined price is bigger than the price of console. That's the rule I've been following and that's why I don't have any next-gen console yet.

I was completely satisfied with my Wii because it had smash and mario kart. The rest was just icing. I don't measure it in number of games. I measure somethings worth in hours. My formula is I must get at least twice the hours of fun as I spent earning the money for something or I'm pissed. Brawl and Mario kart wii were only two games but I easily have put 5000 hours into the two of them combined.

There are exceptions to this rule like every rule. For example if something absolutely blows me away I'm okay if I didn't get my times worth out of it. But only so long as the time that I did actually spend with it was absolutely amazing.

One really worthy game can justify the spending if it offers an unique and irreplaceable experience that you are simply glad not missing out on.

For me, Persona 3 did the job for PS2, Valkyria Chronicles did the job for PS3, Radiant Historia did the job for DS, and Zero Escape did the job for 3DS (even if it's not an exclusive!).

As many games as it takes that I enjoy not having $300-$600 in my pocket.

Which is to say that it varies. I've bought some consoles for a single great game, but I've bought other consoles where no matter how many games I play they are all meh/okay, and I'd have rather just spent the money on other systems.

None of the current consoles look worth spending $300-$600 on.

When it comes to the X1 then the MCC is all it took for me to buy it. As the Playstation consoles are predominantly single player and single player games are getting shorter and shorter, I will wait a few more years before purchasing one.

I suppose 1 stellar title could do it. If all I played on the Wii was SMG2, or if all I played on the Cube was RE4, or Ninja Gaiden Black on the Xbox, MGS3 on the PS2, etc. I would have been alright with that.

I usually expect to get at least 5 truly great titles from a platform though.

I'd say three or four great games will do it...

By the end of this year X1 with FH, SO & MCC and that should put me over the edge to buy and be worth it.

Wii U hmmm, I think Bay 2 + the X game and new Zelda would get me to bite and be worth it.

The PS4, I dunno, perhaps by end of 2015 to mid 2016 there may be a game or two that interest me but it's a wait and see for now.

It depends on so much. I paid $200 for my Wii U, and if I never played it again, I think I've already gotten my money's worth considering the amount of time I've already spent playing it.

Agreed. I am willing to splurge money for a brand new console solely for one memorable game. For example, the only game I have played on the 3DS is Zelda: ALBW and that gaming experience alone justified the console purchase.

Please note that I do own several other 3DS games however those are still on my backburner (along with around 200 other games on Steam and another 5 on WiiU..).

Buy a console when there's games you already like on it and you'll never have any stupid regrets.

I buy each system with one MUST HAVE game (IMHO.)

I got my 360 with gears. PS3 with Resistance Fall of Man. 3DS with Mario kart 7, PSP with metal gear acid. Wii U with Mario 3D World. Wii Sports with Wii.

just one game that make me play it for a long time. Me and some friends are eagerly awaiting for Uncharted 4 to play co-op and competitive for at least a couple of years like we did with Uncharted 2 and then Uncharted 3.

Now I just hope Uncharted 4 releases with a multiplayer component because if not that would be a devastating announcement.

SNK is already working on a new KOF (it might be another pachinko game though) and Capcom is working on SFV and before it they will port SFIV. I think that no matter what happens by the time I buy a PS4 I really doubt I'll be disappointed.

Sounds like a question for Sony fanboys.
