Poll How long do we think the PS4 will be a viable system (31 votes)

2021 16%
2022 42%
Even later 42%

Sony doesn't seem to have such great track record with supporting previous systems when their new machines are released, but considering that there are 100 million of them in people's homes, how long do you see sony supporting the PS4 once the PS5 is released?

I have a feeling that sony is going to abandon it within a year, but until the 5 gains real popularity, we going to see cross gen titles from third parties well into 2022.

I see Sony ditching it in 2021, it will still get some cross gen games from 3rd parties for a couple years.

Sony is ditching the PS4 with the launch of the PS5. I don't see any games coming from Sony post 2020. Also Sony does have a a great track record for supporting their consoles from my understanding.

What do you mean by “viable”? If you’re talking about them making first party games for it then I think they’ll probably stop sometime next year. However they’ll still support the system aside from that with updates, manufacturing, etc. for a good number of years yet probably. Third parties will still put out a fair number of their games on it for awhile yet as well.

MS' approach could spur a half-assed approach from Sony, with trying to release across gens... That being said, I don't expect much. They jumped off the Vita pretty hard.

Pretty much that.

Think they manufactured PS3s through 2017, so about 11 years. And pretty sure PS2 had a 12 year run. Wouldn't be surprised if they're still pumping out PS4s through 2023 at least.

But yeah any major 1st party support will almost certainly be cut off.

I don't expect any of Sony's major titles being cross gen but, third party developers will support the PS4 for a few more years. They aren't going to turn away 10s of millions of consumers.

They might support it a long time, a la PS2. Who knows. But I voted 2022, because even if they do, at that point I believe it will be getting the dregs and half-assed ports and will just be a frankly bad way to go mainstream

I don't see them making anymore exclusives at this time. I imagine they will now put all focus on the PS5.

It was never an option for me as I don’t like movie or anime games. Also it lacks anything interesting online multiplayer wise.

PS4 will still get releases, but nothing from the AAA cabinet (Sony has already signaled so). But indies and third parties have a major opportunity to continue to cash-in and I anticipate they will.

@i_p_daily: I disagree.

PS4 will become a viable system when the PS5 has a big game drought for the first two years being in the market.

Sony drones will be so deprived of PS5 exclusives they'll resort to boasting the sales of a piece of plastic, which is basically the same pattern they fall for every single gen, and they'll have to start replaying one-and-done games on the PS4.

It seems with the ps5 they are trying to get everyone on board for the new playstation. With that in mind, i dont think the ps4 will have the support after the ps5 releases. Of course games that were already in the making with PS4 in mind will release, but any new games i dont think will. There may be a year or two overlap, but that would be due to the fact those games were included already for the ps4

I expect continued support for at least three years after the release of PS5. It will receive system updates and new games.

It would be stupid to ditch a product that continues to earn money especially in this economic climate.

Sony is finished releasing 1st party title after July which is Ghost of Tsushima release month.

After that only 3rd party will support it and I think we will still see some love as microsoft not abandoning Xbone for 2 more years after Series X so 3rd party will still releasing stuff for xbone and PS4 during that timeframe.

I think they'll support it maybe two more years , after the launch of the PS5. It might not be totally nesscary to continue past that point.

Hasn't been viable since 2017 in my opinion. Everything runs like shit (other than GOW and TLOU2, but even then lol 30fps)

They don't have a good track record of supporting legacy systems upon new generations? That's the first time I'm hearing this.

They usually have decent 3rd party support for the previous generations up to two years, after that it's just online services and who knows how long that will last.
