Right now I'm playing through GTAV and I have to say that for every exciting mission it seems like there is one that is just annoying or not very fun. Granted, I'm not terribly far into the game, but it seems to me that there is a lot of padding in the game. For instance, the level where you need to scout out the Merryweather. It makes sense I guess that Trevor would have to perform those menial tasks in order to scout it out, but the act of driving a really slow moving crate hauler is not fun, period. Hell, I accidentally bumped into the corner of a building and had to start over from the beginning. And it was no more fun the second time.

And how does shit like this make it king of open world games, exactly? And I'm talking the actual open world gameplay, not the production values which are admittedly impressive.

@turtlethetaffer: GTA is grossly overhyped because of all the pointless shit they pack into it, like golfing. It's like a bologna sandwich with a lot of random toppings that don't nessessarily complement the bologna.

I was actually thinking about that mission not too long ago.

It was horrendous.

Because their competition is just as bad in terms of putting in pointless shit into their games, as well as having routine by the numbers mission designs, and out right being padded to hell and back.

The better ones get by more on style/personality ala Saints Row or Sleeping Dogs, then on fundamentally doing anything impressive on a gameplay level. Like even on GTA 5's worst segments; it still wouldn't be as pathetic as Watch Dogs.

I didn't find GTA5 to have that many annoying missions, at least not when compared to something like Assassins Creed. The crate moving mission you're talking about sucked, but that was a small part of a big game and at least there's variety throughout the game. Something like AC just uses the same 3 mission structures over and over and over and eavesdropping missions might be the dullest things ever conceived yet they're in EVERY GAME.

The thing GTA does better than any other open world IMO is the feel of the city and the driving around, doing random silly things which is really amplified when you play multiplayer with friends. Something like Sleeping Dogs, which I really enjoyed, never really had that. Sure you could start police chases and go on rampages but it just didn't feel like much fun and it certainly wasn't something you'd spend hours doing like I have in GTA.

@jg4xchamp: The thing about Sleeping Dogs is that at least most of the missions focused on what was most enjoyable: The combat. It was repetitive, but fist fighting and shooting was a lot of fun, so at least, to me, it was enjoyable repetition. Some of the attempts at variety in GTAV work and others don't.

@turtlethetaffer: that fucking yoga mission...that was when I put down my first (and probably last) GTA. Life is already too short for QTEs, I better at least be watching something visually interesting.

@darkspineslayer: It seems to me that Rockstar wanted to toss everything including the kitchen sink in there so people would be impressed by the sheer amount of stuff in the game. The sad thing is that it worked.

You bump into the one bad and boring mission and you're already writting off the game as bad? Seriously?

GTA V's missions sucked. I just play the old GTA games now, they feel less tedious.

People complained about the lack of variety of GTA 4.

And people need to realize with a game the size of GTA V for as long it lasts, in order to give plenty of variety, there is going to be stuff that is less than fun. Making a game with the size, scope, and variety of GTA V with every single thing being a insanely fun to do is impossible and will never happen.

Well for me because its the sum of its parts. Yes that wasn't a stellar mission. But am I going to blast the entire game because of that? It was the GOTY for me. I love that they don't milk it with quick releases, and stay relevant.

@geniobastardo: So you are telling me a post-apocaliptic first person shooter and a first person fantasy game are the same as a GTA game...

You are basically telling me that an orange(Fallout) had a sweeter taste than this apple (GTA V) and that the 30 minutes that it took to eat a watermelon (skyrim) are comparable to this apple (GTA V)

You preety much proved my point

@geniobastardo: Can't comment on mafia, RDR is made by Rockstar themselves and Sleeping Dogs was sadly underrated

But anyway, there, was it that hard to mention proper examples? lol

The things GTA excels at is the level of detail that's in the gamse. SR2 was a better game than GTAIV in my opinion because I had a lot more fun playing it than playing bowling and all those boring side activities in GTA. There are plenty of ways to make a game overall better than GTA itself but I guess a lot of developers aren't really trying as hard to really polish their game as much as possible.

@CroidX: Rockstar polishes their games sure but a lot of the side stuff is really freaking boring. Are you telling me you enjoy things like the tow truck missions in GTAV? Or yoga? They're boring as hell. And sometimes Rockstar puts the boring stuff into the main game and forces the player through it.

I think that it can be summarized perfectly by a mission in GTAV.

The one that has you tracking a Merryweather plane as Trevor. There's at least ten minutes of mindless flying without really doing anything. If you crash you're set pretty far back. Then you get to the exciting part, the action sequence on the plane and it's great. But you need to wade through those first like ten minutes of the mission to get to the really good part. And that's what most of Rockstar's games seem like to me. You go through a lot of dull stuff before you get to the really good parts, then go back to more dull stuff.

Open world games are pretty boring to me, I never played 5, but I tried 3, Vice City, and San Andreas back in the day and none could win me over.

In fact the only open world games I can say I really enjoyed are Batman Arkham City and Spiderman 2.

i agree with original posters premise gta has many boring elements what the game excels at is creating an interesting world o'dwyer nailed it when digging into watchdogs it is an adventure or discovery game like skyrim or fallout it is like real life walking down the street is boring as **** but interesting things can happen i also like far cry 3 that has far better mechanics than gta but it is far more limited in terms of world discovery which is why i didnt play it half as long i didnt play past vaas

@lostrib: dude. Seriously. Why lie about it? Everyone saw that I had gifted it to you. See...this is why I don't usually just flat out give money or gifts to the poor. Majority don't try to better themselves, but instead become complacent with the situation they are in.

Have some respect, man. Jesus.

GTA is a waste of an open world, amazingly designed as they are. R* goes and creates this totally believable world, then packs it with stupid, superficial shit to do. Although the stock market was cool and an improvement....

Wow you manage to pick out one "boring" mission and ask how a long running series that created the open world genre is considered the king of open world games.

Good characters, story, detail in everything, fun
