Poll How frequently have you purchased the same game? (50 votes)

Never - I've kept the original 8%
Once or twice 32%
a handful of times on various devices 34%
Keep on bringing them HD remasters/remakes 14%
I will never cease to rebuy a game I love 12%

I've probably done it a handful of times on various devices. Kingdom Hearts comes to mind the most. I've had the original, then got the PS3 remasters, then the PS4 All in One collection for my PS5. Alien: Isolation (disc) on the PS4, then on my Switch (digitally), then digitally on my PS5. Mine's mostly due to not keeping my older consoles. Once a new one comes out, I don't really care about keeping it.

A lot now that I think about it. Usually for good reason, other times just being a sucker.

Various versions of SF2 on various platforms.

MVC2

Third Strike Online - Online play and training mode.

Prime Trilogy - The few games I prefer with motion control.

TW101 PC - One of my favorite action games, no longer shackled to WiiU.

Bayo1 and Vanquish PC - Two great games, run and look better, can always access on a modern platform.

Various SNES games for the GBA.

Various retro classics on the Wii Virtual Console.

Plenty of retro classic collections on Steam.

DMC games on Steam.

Team Ico remasters.

MGS collections.

Bayo 2 on Switch.

Super Mario 3D All-Stars. An emulated ripoff.

Probably others.

Very rarely. At most be about 3-4 times.

Street Fighter II/Doom/Halflife

A lot of it back then was new editions, discounted bundled or simply losing the disk.

- Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4, got it on PC

- God of War on PS4, got it on PC

Not very often.

Typically it's a PC release of a console game which brings opportunities like modding or better performance.

Dark Souls and Dark Souls 2. Plus DS2 was stolen along with my PS3, so I bought that game 3 times.

  • Original PS3 release (stolen)
  • Original PS3 release again.
  • Scholar of the First Sin, Steam release

Played it a lot so I it was worth it.

The only times I can recall are after selling my previous copy (or giving it away), or if there's a remake or significant remaster to a game I've loved.

A whole lot of times for various games and reasons. I’ve purchased many games multiple times to play on different systems from different generations. Purchased many games when they got a remaster or remake. Also purchased the same game on the same system. In that case though it’s because I already have the physical version however later on down the road I’ll purchase the digital version if I see it on sale for a very steep discount. That way I can just play the game again if I ever desired to do so without having to put the disc in the system.

I've changed consoles a lot of times over the years and had to rebuy games for one reason or another. If certain games were ported over to XBOX I would probably buy them again.

I bought and sold the 3DS and several of its games many times. I think I was the worst offender with that game system.

GTA IV: 2- First copy got scratched by the 360's lack of disc bumpers

GTA V: 3- got the 360, PS4, then PC version.

Uncharted: Owned all 3 on PS3, bought the PS4 Pro Remasters

Horizon ZD: 2- Had the PS4 version, got it on PC for 4K/60fps

Bought Borderlands and Bioshock games on PC after having the 360 versions.

I'd pay for a MGS4 remake on day 1

Purchased Deus Ex four times, I think. First disc broke, the second got lost somewhere, third was replaced with the Steam version.

If buying the Mass Effect Legendary Edition counts as double purchase, then I've purchased all 3 in the series twice.

Don't even know how many duplicates I've got from all the bundles over the years.

  • Metroid Prime 1 and 2 on GC and Wii
  • Uncharted 1-2 PS3 to PS4 Collection
  • DMC 1-2 PS2 and PS4
  • Doom I-III - PC and PS4
  • Doom 64 - N64 and PS4
  • Hades Switch and PC
  • Bioshock 1 PS3 and Bioshock Collection PS4
  • Jak & Daxter 1-2 PS2 and Collection on PS4

I am sure there are a couple more, but not many. Most are from buying a collection and games I already owned on older machines were included.

I baught BOTW three times. Once for the WiiU, then again for the Switch and a copy for my nephew. Five copies of Arma 3 back when it was in EA for me and some of my mates. Gifted two Half-Life Alyx to friends as well as one for myself. Same with Kerbal Space program two copies gifted to friends. I often buy two copies of single player games for me and my daugher, games like Oxygen not Included, Subnautica/Below Zero, Rimworld etc.

Usually remasters are free on PC so dont have to buy them twice, though I did buy that Mafia 1 remaster.

Resident Evil 4 - PS2, PS3, PS4 and PC.

Many other games but RE4 easily takes the cake. Haven't bought a game for the multiple time in awhile.

I bought the StarCraft remaster (against my better judgement), but preferred the classic look. Besides that, I don't think ever repurchased a game. Maybe extra copies of CE for LANs.

Well, I think I bought the same game for different platforms three times. Spider-Man and God of War for PC (bought it for PS4 previously), and Satisfactory on Steam (my first and only purchase from the damnable Tencent-Epic Store). Those are the only ones I consider complete 're-buys" because I had a perfectly working copy of the game, I just wanted it on a different platform.

Over the years however I have purchased a few games that I either lost or got massive overhauls. Deus Ex, for example, I bought in digital form because I lost my physical copy (I also haven't had an optical drive for like 15+ years). I also purchased assorted collections, such as the Command and Conquer Collection, because it's nice to have all those games together.

TL;DR: I guess technically if you want to argue which games I bought twice, you could say maybe 20-30, but I only really count three of them because they were unnecessary purchases.

I think you can count collections, remasters, remakes, "special editions", etc. as unique products though so I stand by the lower number.

BF2042 was the first in like a decade lmao. But if we're including remakes, then i guess Demon's Remake, RE2R and soon RE4R.

Unless the physical copy got damaged, once is enough for me. And even then, I would not pay any more money for the same thing...

Several times in the last few decades (games in bold are those I originally bought):

Super Mario All-Stars (SNES, 1993) is a compilation of enhanced ports of Super Mario Bros. (NES, 1985) Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels (Disk System, 1986), Super Mario Bros. 2 (NES, 1988), and Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES, 1988).

Age of Empires II (twice for some odd, but forgettable reason)

Age of Mythology (the same reason as Age of Empires II)

Star Wars: Empire at War (first as a physical purchases, then the second as digital purchase from Steam)

Super Mario All-Stars Limited Edition (Wii, 2010) is a port of Super Mario All-Stars (SNES, 1993).

Super Mario 3D All-Stars (Switch, 2020) is a compilation port of Super Mario 64 (N64, 1996), Super Mario Sunshine (GCN, 2002), and Super Mario Galaxy (Wii, 2007).

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (Switch, 2021) is an enhanced port of Super Mario 3D World (Wii U, 2013).

The Last of Us.

As its the GOAT of video games I beat it 3-4 times on PS3, 3-4 times on PS4 TLOU: Remastered and then 5 times on PS5 as The Last of Us Part I.

Can't wait for the 8K/60 fps PS6 version or the 16k/120fps PS7 version!

I had to buy Diablo 3 3 times because the first 2 had a scratched disc (bought at a used video game shop) and wouldn’t work. Finally just ended up downloading it on my PS5 when I got it in 2020.

Quite a few that I own 2 versions of, where i played the console version first and then got it on PC some years later. Also got a number of collections that include games I already had for older systems. (God of War, Uncharted , Jak, Ratchet)

I can think of some cases where I bought 3 versions:

Kingdom Hearts 2 on PS2, the PS3 2.5 collection and then 1.5+2.5 PS4 collection .

Metal Gear Rising physical + digital on PS3 then again on Steam. (Might even have the 360 version but that might have been GWG) Actually own 3 different versions of MGS2 and 3 as well. (PS2, PS3, 360)

Not a lot.

Just bought Blasphemous on Steam though, despite owning it on Switch. Just because it was very cheap, and so I don't have to play it on Switch. I have no idea why I bought any 3rd party games on Switch at all. Complete waste. I'll never get a 3rd party game on Nintendo systems ever again.

Paying more for a worse version, and be unsure whether you can continue playing the game or not when the console is dead. I have a PC with Steam where I don't have to worry about shit like that at all. So dumb.

Not to many

  • Max Payne 2- PS2, PC.
  • GTA Trilogy- PS2 versions, PC digital original versions, and The Definitive Edition
  • RDR2- PS4, PC
  • F.E.A.R- PC retail version and many years later F.E.A.R. digital version with the two expansion packs
  • Resident Evil 4 -PS2, PC, 2014 version

There's also other games that where on Epic store that I'm not counting because they where free.

Once or twice, Mario Kart 8 though it had extras; and Marvel vs Capcom 2 recently buying the 1UP arcade (have digitally on a PS3).

However, I do plan on purchasing a physical copy of Metal Gear Solid V: PP and Eldin Ring.

I have many times between remasters and ports but look no further than MGS2 when it comes to this crap. I originally bought MGS2 Substance for PC, then PS2 (essential collection), then 360 (HD collection), then PS3 (Legacy collection) and eventually digital HD collection for Xbox One.

There is one IP that I unfortunately bought so many times. So hypocritical as I always criticized Pokemon and Nintendo fans buying remakes and reharshes and that is Persona.

I own both Revelations Persona on PS1 and the PSP remaster. I also have the PS1 classic console thing which contains the original game.

I own every version of Persona 3. P3, P3F,P3P and P3F on PS3.

I own 2 version of P4, the PS2 and PSVita version.

I own both P5 and P5R on PS4.

I also own the P4 Dancing on PSV and PS4.

But since the series is going mainsteam it just loses the charm. I no longer cared to buy any new or remaster release of any games in the series.

I always think of borderlands 2 when I see titles like this. I had it for 360, ps4, Vita and PC and I never finished any of them. Bleh.

But in terms of common practice I went through a phase a few years ago where I was rebuying games I'd like to play again when they became super cheap. Now I just buy games I never played super cheap. I like that better because it really feels like covering a lot of ground when you stick to new experiences.

Ocarina of time and Bayonetta stand out to me right now. I usually dont rebuy games, but I'm sure there's a small list.
