For owners of multiple consoles, how do you decide which multi-platform game goes where?

For me, if both games look very similar on either an Xbox or PlayStation system, I choose the version that has a more stable frame rate. I also choose depending on which controller feels better for that game's genre. So fighting games go to my PS4 because better D-pad. Shooters go to my Xbox because offset analog sticks.

The one with better performance/visuals. Mostly it's multiplats on PC and exclusives on consoles.

I prefer the Xbox One controller and I prefer the achievement system and online so unless there's some really serious game breaking issues I'll always go with that version.

My PS4 is my main gaming console so everything multiplayer I get on that. That could change with the Switch coming out though, I will make good use of the portability with the Switch.

If my friends have it on a console that we all got because of the games, I'll get it on that. This gen, that console is PS4.

In any other case, PC, because it's cheaper to get it on PC and it will (almost always) run better.

If I want a premium multiplayer experience, for many games that are "console blockbusters," the console version will have many more early adopters. PC gamers are usually cheap (read: smart) and buy games usually once they go down in price a bit.

My default go-to system for most multiplats is Xbox since I prefer the Xbox controller and Xbox Live.

Exceptions are:

  • I will usually buy retro style games on Nintendo consoles since I associate Nintendo with retro games so they just feel like they belong on a Nintendo console. Plus, these types of games are usually better played with a d-pad and Nintendo has the best d-pad.
  • If I want to play a game in virtual reality I will buy it for PC so that I can play it on my Vive.
  • I'll also make an exception if there is a big flaw with the Xbox version that would significantly hurt my experience. For example, I made an exception for Dark Souls 3 and bought it for PS4 since the game was obviously designed around the PS4 controller with no care given to how it would work on a Xbox One controller. I prefer the Xbox controller, but FromSoftware did not design this game to work well with the Xbox controller. Having to use the bumpers for primary attacks works fine on the PS4 controller, but using the bumper for primary attacks doesn't work well on a Xbox One controller and FromSoftware should have known this and modified the control layout for the Xbox version, but since they didn't, I had to get the PS4 version.

It's all about the feel of the game and what I think it would feel more at home on, I don't specifically buy them for one platform because it does X thing better than Y.

That is why Play Anywhere is quickly becoming one of the best modern features in gaming, I don't have to choose for games that are a part of it.

I just get it on Xbox One, no debating about it. I have a PS4 but only use it for exclusives.
