How did GTA 5 win game of the year at VGX?

The multiplayer has been broken since launch and the single player was average at best.

Everything else was amazing, but not nearly enough to consider it a game of the year winner.

The most popular game wins these awards, not the best aka The Last Of Us.

I'm not a big fan of GTAV but thank god The Last of Terrible AI didn't win.

Eh for what it's worth I think it deserved GOTY. It's been a long time since a game made me sit down and play for 8-10 hour sessions per day (on weekends) until I was finished with the game. Multiplayer was a disappointment though IMO, I was expecting more.

Well it's a sandbox game. We all know what to expect from a GTA game. 5 is bigger and has a lot of detail but it does not improve mechanics wise in my opinion. It only one because it was heavily anticipated and it is GTA.

That Spike Awards show has always been a joke, but maybe GTA5 is just that good. I haven't played GTA5 yet, so I can't really complain about it winning any awards. I will say that it would have to be about 1000x better than any other GTA game ever created to deserve the award against its competition, though.

Best game of the year or the gen imo, i played all that shit before, yeah it's cute and fun for a night. GTA 5 is a game that everyone will remember and name this gen no other game can say that.

Uncharted 2, Super Mario Galaxy all had a bigger impact on the gaming industry, and will be remembered much more then gta 5

What do you mean the online has been broken since launch? I have it on the 360 and its been working since I bought the game last week. Is it broken on the PS network? This is news to me. But as far as the Single player goes I thought the game was amazing, the perfection of every single little detail really amazed me. I especially appreciated how you were able to switch between players during heists/missions. As Bill & Ted would say "GTA 5 is MOST EXCELLENT"

GTA V is a phenomenal game - and don't be surprised if it takes a broom to the vast majority of GOTY awards.

Why do people care about the VGA's (or VGX now...bleh)

It's not like they have a higher critical athority over other websites. Publishers aren't going to proudly show off their award as a sale stamp when one of there games wins at the VGAs. The VGAs are a joke, no one cares about the awards because they aren't judged by any high praised critics. It's just a popularity contest like every other website.

Because it was, imo, the best game I played this year. Now didn't play sm3d but I did TLOU, and GTA5 was a stronger, more involving game. I enjoyed SC Blacklist as much as TLOU. If TLOU had been a multipat, there wouldn't be nearly as much outcry about it not winning.

I started GTAV over thanksgiving break, but I didn't bring it back up to school with me because I have finals. From the 10 or so hours that I've played, I can see why it won. I also just beat The Last of Us yesterday; if that had won, it would have been justifiable too.
