Just find out fantastic video that sum up everything wrong with cover system. except he praise vanquish which imo a terrible game.

even games like max payne has cover system now. its such a lazy design. theres the reason why third person genre is not strong today.

what are your thoughs?

Eh... the only alternative is to run around like a chicken with your head cut off while the enemies lock on to you and whittle away your health. Those days aren't much fun anymore.

Agreed, and well you know, in the military we're taught to TAKE COVER ALWAYS. I like to play super duper guy in games sometimes too but I like a little groundedness as well.

the cover system is laziest mechanic ever. you can see what is going on behind your back. it make game very easy. just cover and your health regenerated.

I would say health generation is a lazy mechanic in of itself, which also applies to many FPS games. Now, if a game's worth its salt, it will know how to balance cover and health regeneration benefits by adapting its gameplay. For instance, use cover too much? Enemies use a bazooka and blow it up forcing you to scatter. Regenerate behind a wall too much? You get flanked.

Honestly, no gameplay mechanic is inherently lazy. That accusation lies with the AI and the design options that developers implement to overcome those mechanics.

That's why Transformers: Fall of Cybertron is the best. No cover system, no regen health, no overpowered classes, and an overall excellent single and multiplayer.

There is nothing wrong with cover systems in 3rd person shooters. They are better for having cover systems. There probably should be more thought put into how the systems are implemented, and in most cases AI can certainly be improved to make 3rd person shooters more challenging.

the health regen was popular in last gen but tone down this gen as we see many games return back to health bars.

however no developers getting rid of this cover system crap in third person games.

A TPS without cover might as well be a fantasy rpg. It is a common sensical game mechanic.

@ghosts4ever:

How cover system improved 3rd person shooters:

1. Gun fights actually FEEL like gun fights.

2. Encourages the use of tactics in combat.

3. Adds a learning curve to combat.

4. You don't have to stand there like an idiot shooting straight ahead like a bad fps game from the early 2000's.

Vanquish is one of the best, and is probably better than OP's favorite game :]

Lost Planet was one of my favorites for a game without a cover system. I used to place at or near the top in every match in that game. I miss it so much.

no not really. it ruined all immersion because you take cover and your health regenerated. it took all fun and challange.

2. Encourages the use of tactics in combat.

what tactics? there is no tactic when you duck on wall cover. theres more tactic when you crouch behind the object and do lean and peak.

3. Adds a learning curve to combat.

again wrong. see above.

4. You don't have to stand there like an idiot shooting straight ahead like a bad fps game from the early 2000's.

thats what make game a challenging. you have to crouch behind an object and you dont know what enemy is doing. then you shoot.

all in all. cover ruined shooters.

Resident Evil 4 and Max Payne say hi. Two of the best TPS games made and they are still a blast, and they didn't need a cover mechanic. They have more depth to their gameplay than any of the cover shooters name dropped outside of Vanquish. Albeit Gears of War is at least neat as **** in mp thanks to wall bouncing.

But if you're playing without the duck and cover system, you might as well just be playing a fps game. Because you'll just be left strafing from side to side like a boner.

replace resident evil 4 with mafia 1 and i would agree that 2 of best TPS games ever made and they dont have cover system.

@KBFloYd: Splatoon! And Splatoon 2!! I disagree with OP, love Gears and cover helps you not get shot- as helpful in games as it is in the real world. I was just happy to have the best answer to an honest question. Splatoon is a fantastic third person shooter with no cover mechanic. Aside from that franchise I can't think of any other ones of the top of my head though.

It's the combination of cover and 3rd person that I personally dislike, taking your time, looking at things you shouldn't be able to see, which is why I especially dislike playing 3rd person shooters in multiplayer, it's dumb. You are not supposed to see where your enemies are moving while fondling your balls behind a wall.

Increasing the difficulty in cover shooters tends to only make the game more tedious to play, especially Uncharted where the most fun you get is putting the game on easy and rambo away. Most are simply a bore to play.

Have you been in a gun fight? I highly doubt that you'd be able to see everything(including enemy position) whilst hiding behind something. :P

Not saying cover shooters are bad, but that's just stupid logic. Lol

I like cover in third person shooters. In-fact prior to Gears Of War third person shooters games like Freedom Fighters had levels designed around cover they just lacked the stick cover we have now so you would have to do it your self and lean left and right or crouch to get cover... I guess that is the more realist way but still cover based shooters are great, I can't think of one that isn't cover based that holds up today.

I guess it depends on the speed of the game, in Rainbow Six Vega it made a lot of sense.

A good way to fix it is have the player go into first person mode while under cover. No cheating there

I certainly don't think it ruined third person shooters. It can be a boring mechanic by itself, but it pairs well with others. There's a reason why ND introduced far more open, and vertical gameplay areas in U4, and U:TLL; it's because it promotes the type of gameplay you'd see in MP / "Easy" mode where you'd run & gun etc.

Then stick to fps. But without duck and cover, a 3rd person shooter would be exactly like the same as any fps. Strafing around is fine for fps but not for 3rd person. We need to have something to differentiate the two, otherwise, what's the point?

Yeah Uncharted 4 and Gears 4 both come along to great critical reception from reviewers with the same boring cover based shooting and poorly told stories and Remedy brings out Quantum Break that throws all that cover based nonsense away in favour of fast paced power based FPS action all wrapped up in an awesome time traveling story but it gets panned by critics
