Now that my beautiful title has easily baited you into the thread, lets talk about Sony's 3D audio, the second most overhyped new feature of the system. Now, is it just me or is there significantly less clarity in sound when using their 3D sound? For the last month, i have thoroughly tried all the 5 profiles that are available for their 3D sound, and the one that sounds the cleanest is the default. Thing is, when you compare the default profile to 3D completely turned off, and simply using their stereo sound, it is so much much cleaner. The sound is not muffled anymore and its much easier to hear footsteps and the direction they're coming from.

At first, i was only able to get their 3D sound through the controller audio jack, which is obviously crap (even tho, this is how Sony intended you to experience their 3D sound because through HDMI its not even supported ๐Ÿคฃ), so i didn't want to be too judgemental, but now that i am getting it through my amp/dac, there's no excuse for it to be this shitty. And i am not testing this on a $50-100 trashy gaming headset from Walmart either. I tested it with the Origen+ dac/amp and three different pair of headphones. The Sennheirser HD598, Sennheiser HD599 and the Sennheirser 58X Jubilee. All three being very popular for gaming for their sound stage and imaging, so its not a matter of them being poor sounding pair of cans.

I have never had Dolby Atmos, nor tried any games with it, but on their site, they have a demo, and it sounds a shitton better than anything 3D sound related on the PS5.

I have searched online to see what people think of the tempest engine, and i've fund a lot of people bitchin' about the sound being poor on resetera. But we all know that site is SJW heavy, so if i agree with what they're saying, does that make me an SJW? This is very upsetting, guys.

TLDR: Tempest engine is shyte.

That's disappointing to read.

I rarely game with my amp and 5.1 turned on since it's typically too loud for the household so my experience with current 3D audio has primarily been on my Xbox One X Dolby Atmos through a pair of Sony wh-h900n wired through the controller.

It sounds great to me, but while I appreciate quality sound, I'm hardly an audiophile.

As for Sony's Tempest audio, I assume it can be patched and improved upon. Hopefully it's tiptop by the time I get a PS5.

Even tormy came in to damage control๐Ÿ˜Š

And there is nothing to believe. A simple test is very easy to do on your own, but you don't even have the console.

Nothing else but Demon's souls. I've played GoW a bit, but i don't think the game supports it.

Demon's Remake is known to have very good sound, tho, so one game is enough to know the performance of the audio engine. It just sounds muffled and unclean. Very similar to a heavily compressed sound. In standard stereo, it sounds excellent.

Hmm ok, that does seem like a problem then. Perhaps they must compress the audio to make it fast enough. Luckily I have very low standards when it comes to audio, but I can see this being an actually issue for others.

It will improve, and get HDMI support later on probably, considering they want this to work on regular tv speakers as well. But this will take time, it's good that Sony have the extra hardware for the extra audio processing if devs want to do that. The reason why the audio quality is bad is probably the audio quality that is limited on the controller audio jack.

Sony didn't exactly get any hype for the good audio processing in the PS3, most people was ok with the low bitrate audio on the X360 and a lot of multiplats that gen. And the Xone and PS4 didn't really improve much from the best PS3 titles.

That's possible, but i imagine they're intelligent enough to know that some will use their amps/dacs to get their 3D audio from other than the controller's audio jack. Or maybe they aren't, and that's why its this bad? Makes a bit of sense, but standard stereo is clearer even through the controller jack.

I noticed that in Resident Evil 2 on PC. When you're in the menu and you switch the binaural recording/3D audio on and off, the rain sounds much cleaner with it off. The droplets sound more distinct. I will continue to use headphones for pure stereo and mono and speakers for multichannel sound. It's a shame Sony decided to optimize their sound for the cheaper option, since gamers in general are cheap.

Again with this moron plugging in his nerdheisers into the controller. Well documented that plugging it into the controller muffles the audio. The most embarrassing thing is that you keep spending loot on dacs and amps and getting the same result LOL. Pulse 3D sounds better than your seingaysers wireless lololol

@hardwenzen: yeah. If the audio is clearer in standard stereo, it could be that they need the equipment to support the tempest 3D? Some extra processing of the analog signal at the equipment end. I doubt it's supposed to loose audio quality.

Face palm. You're using headphones designed for listening to stereo music and complaining about them butchering multi-channel audio. Do you do any research on anything before you come here whining about things?

Why not just turn on 5.1 surround sound in your games while running audio out of your built-in TV speakers?

I don't know much about either. I do know Atmos can also do 100's of sounds at once like Sony's. I am not aware of the pricing, but I just was not sure how one was better than the other.

Wait a second. Are you implying that a top secret pair of headphones is needed to take advantage of their 3D engine THAT SONY MARKETED AS A THING ANYONE WITH A PAIR OF HEADPHONES COULD ACCESS? Have you not watched the PS5 reveal where half of the show Cerny spent talking about audio and how its for everyone and not just your top secret pair of cans?

And you're telling me to do some research ๐Ÿ˜Š

Face palm indeed.

But you're supposed to get it through the headphone jack of the controller, so what kind of decoding could i even need? I don't think that Sony would add this kind of complexity when selling their system to casuals that have trouble seeing the difference between 30 and 60fps.

@briguyb13: What decoding are you talking about? Sony have stated that their "3d audio" is only available through headphones - any headphones. The decoding is done by tempest, and if the feature is supported in the game, then it works. You don't need to decode 3d audio lol...

There are soundcards with good DACs. I have Soundblaster ZxR and Soundblaster AE-5. They both have solid DACs. Asus Essence STX line is also good.

Links to an article that reads: "Experience PS5's Tempest 3D AudioTech with compatible headsets"

You can activate 3D audio with any set of headphones plugged into the PS5. That doesn't mean you're going to actually hear 3D audio.

If we take all your toys away, you won't have anything to whine about. But then you'll whine about that.

@IMAHAPYHIPPO: I am not exactly sure what the hell you're talking about. In this article alone, "On the PS5, youโ€™ll be able to experience 3D Audio with the headphones that many of you already own, either through USB connection to the console, or by plugging your headphones into the DualSense wireless controllerโ€™s 3.5mm headset jack." is mentioned. There are dozens of articles that hype their new audio and ain't nobody is saying its only for certain headsets. You were completely wrong for even thinking that a special pair of headphones is needed to decode 3D sound and you're just making shit up to shill up the PS5.
