http://www.warcry.com/news/view/130891-Planetside-2-On-PS4-Will-Have-Graphics-Equivalent-to-Ultra-on-PC

Planetside 2 is nonetheless set to join the PS4's free-to-play library sometime in 2014. That in mind, the game's creative director Matt Higby recently revealed some details about the PlayStation port's visual quality that should come as a welcome news for PS4 owners looking forward to getting in on the game.

According to Higby, "the PS4 version will be nearly identical to the PC version" and players can expect it the visuals to look like "you turned up your PC version to Ultra." Though no information about the game's HD resolution has yet been revealed, this high graphical quality should be a welcome change from many console ports that have to have their looks scaled back a bit to compensate for the generally lesser capabilities of consoles.

This is interesting. Not sure how demanding Planetside 2 is, but now you have a reason to just buy a PS4 instead of a PC that can run it on Ultra.

Why would someone buy a PC for this game?

It's easy to run on most pc's imo.

Ultra isn't that demanding tbh.

it might be on ultra, but if it's 30 FPS and 720p that won't be so impressive.

lol reason to buy a ps4 over PC? because some F2p game that can run on most computers plays at its highest setting on a console... ok

@Jakandsigz: You can run PS2 on the same settings with similar PC hardware.

The optimisation that has been done for the game (probably due to the impending console release) has made its way over to the PC in the patches over the last couple of months with massive improvements to the speed and fluidity of the game if anyone had trouble running it before they really should try it now it's a pretty massive difference

gee i dunno like stated many times before platform preference? i'll try it out i've not got the money for a high spec laptop of space for an actual rig nowadays a lot of those factors mean little to me to be honest no matter how much you protest their importance to YOU.

3rd party mods unlocks Planetside 2's screen settings to 5760x1080p which is 3X of 1920x1080p.

Question is, at how many frames per second? What resolution? How many players total? If it doesn't max out all those, then it is not Ultra settings.

So now that PC parity is a problem for the PS4, I wonder how many other games will have to be dumbed down to run on PC.

Hell no. That game turned out to be so pitiful. It got hyped, and it fell flat on its face.

It runs on ultra at 1080p on a 7850 with a decent CPU. Just don't expect fantastic frame rates. It runs on that with dips below 30 when the shit gets thick.

They're completely different versions of the game. Even development is going to be different after launch. They said PS4 won't be getting patches as often as PC will. So any optimizations being done currently are only for the PC version, not for the upcoming PS4 release.

I ran that game at 1920x1080 with a HD 6870 when it was in beta just fine with a 2500k.

The PS4 has a custom HD 7850 so it's not really a shocker especially if its going to be running on lower resolution.

I just hope no one is daft enough to assume that playing a game at 1280x720 at 30FPS is the same as playing it at 2560x1080/2560x1440 at 60FPS it take's a machine at least 3 times more powerful to do that.

It could probably do 1080P 60FPS no problem. Game isn't nearly as good looking at BF4 IMO.

Unfortunately its a HEAVILY CPU dependant game.

So dependant in fact that its one of those rare games where a i7 and a GTX 770 will give you the same performance as a i5 and GTX 780... It's really that bad.

While a HD 7850 COULD play that game at 1080p with 40-50FPS it wouldn't be able to pull that off with a A8 CPU.

Below is the beta performance but things haven't really changed.

Looks aren't everything.

I get a better framerate with everything maxed out in Battlefield 4 Mulitplayer than I do with a game like Planetside 2 or ARMA 3.

Poorly optimised and CPU heavy games.

The PS4 build will be lucky to get a solid 30FPS at 1600x900.

Optimization has changed very significantly since beta. In fact, the last couple of months or so has been patches dedicated exclusively to optimizing the game.

Technical Director, Ryan Elam, stated, “We focused our efforts on the machines that more than 80% of our player base had, which is quad-core or above, AMD and Intel, 4G or more RAM, Windows 64-bit, AMD and NVIDIA GPUs. We focused almost entirely on CPU optimizations, because it's a great deal easier to lower GPU settings when you want higher FPS.”

Regardless of what they have said to have done... A GTX 780Ti and a i5 4670K in Planetside 2 gets a worse framerate than Battlefield 4 both games maxed out. What ever optimisation they have done isn't enough in my opinion... Its better but still CPU dependant.

The CPU in a PS4 along with a its GPU will not be able to play Planetside 2 on Ultra at 1920x1080 at 60FPS regardless.

Its just routine good old fashion publicity. People need to talk about their games. Take what they say with a pinch of salt.

Planetside 2 was showcased running a GTX 670 and i5 PC in a developer interview running the game at 2560x1440 and at launch people like be had issues with a GTX 680.

Publicity!... Pinch of salt!... Honey nut cheerios!

An overclocked i7 920 and a GTX 770 can see drops to 50 FPS on the ultra preset at 1080p.

Have you played PlanetSide 2? With a frame rate counter.

BF4 has like 5% of Planetside2's scale though.

Actually it takes around 8 times more powerful GPU from 720p@30fps to 1440p@60fps, and 2 times more powerful CPU.

The thing with developers and console games is that they almost always lie. Higby might say it's the Ultra preset but they might have fog shadows turned off. Or particle effects turned down one notch. Or this, or that. Plus you have resolution. A big factor. Then you have frame rate. Another big factor. Then you even have the overall render quality scaler in PlanetSide 2, which allows you to lower what appears to be the internal resolution the game is rendered in but keep the display resolution. It's a slider on PC and I'm not certain but it appears that's what it does. One thing I especially notice on console games is the distance detailed objects and shadows are drawn. They also seem to never use AF either, which puzzles me because I never thought AF was all that demanding on hardware.

There's lots of things to factor in. You can even take BF4 as just one example of what I'm talking about. Shitty websites like DF saying things are on ultra quality when you can see if you do your own comparisons that they are not.
