Why doesn't the 360 have a blu ray drive yet? I mean they have windows on sony vaios with blue ray drives on them, Sony doesn't own 100% of rights to blu ray and people don't have to stream movies just to watch HD movies. Just as they had an hd-dvd add on they could easily make a bluray add on.

This really surprises me since MS is always trying to grab market share of amost every technology. It's strange they haven't done this yet.

Bad idea I think. Just keep it basic for the rest of this gen.

No need to remind HD-DVD adapters of what happened.

a little late in the game for MS to add bluray in any meaningful capacity aside from movies.

If Microsoft wants to put an end to the PS3 all they have to do is release a Blu-ray add-on priced about $50. Blu-ray capabilities is what is selling the PS3, not gaming. And before people start with the fanboy comments take a look at software sales and you tell me then what people are using their PS3s for.

Why would they include a BR drive? The dev kits would still keep DVD standard and standalone drives are getting better and cheaper. Seems kind of pointless.

Wouldn't that be like M$ admitting defeat? Kinda like Sony/M$ did with motion controls

No, it wouldn't be used for gaming at all. Only movies.

First off, I have no regrets with buying the HDDVD drive seeing as it still gets used almost daily by my wife and I. The movies are still available at online shops and I'm still finding movies that I want for under $5 BRAND NEW. Back on topic though, why would MS bother when they know full well that many 360 owners who wanted BR either already purchased a PS3 or a BR player by now. It'd be a waste of their money to invest in releasing a BR drive so late this generation. Maybe next, but even then, I don't care.

They should wait until next gen to do Blu-Ray. But, it wouldn't hurt to become a contributor to the Blu-Ray Disc Association now and work their way up to Board of Directors.

He isn't saying include a drive, he's saying have an add on like the HD-DVD.

MS doesn't care about the HD formats (they're more concerned with DD and streaming); the HD-DVD add-on was simply a low-risk/high-reward attempt at killing off the PS3 before it even launched. It doesn't take a rocket surgeon to figure out that if HD-DVD had become the HD standard Sony would have a slight issue selling the $600 PS3, so MS slapped the HD-DVD add-on together for ****s and giggles.

It is indeed a strange endeavour to have an HD-DVD drive but no Blu-ray drive. What's the matter here?

It is too late now, besides MS is moving more units than sony, so why would they invest in an expensive media?
