Couple of times. Before digital downloads, it was actually a lot of fun.

I went to a few, one of which was Halo 2. To the best of my knowledge, that was the original midnight release.

I did on occasional for pre-orders I did for last-gen during both PS3/Xbox 360 when they were still in their primes for a game I was really mega hype and I always go to Gamestop when they were still good for something and they always throw a party for midnight launch games. I had fun doing it before the rise of digital games and from the top of my head, I'll list some of my best midnight launch pick up:

  • Halo Reach Xbox Slim combo, my best launch ever! There were a TONS of people there at Gamestop to receive the new and improve Xbox 360 Slim and boy, that was the best Xbox 360 console I have ever own in my life time and the first ever custom console to that.
  • PS3, Now I can tell ya this. Picking up PS3 for the first time, LOTS of gamers had to wait in line just to pick their pre-orders up and it was cold at night, I'm talking 20 degrees cold! Good thing I had a hot coffee with me at the time.
  • Halo 2, after the best of the best that was CE, me and 3 friends had to go and get this bad boy cause I was still a huge Halo fanboy at the time during high school. I regret I wasn't their for Halo 3 :(
  • Killzone 2, just like Halo 2, another shooter franchise got me hooked up.
  • PS4, my final midnight launch pick up as I was already gaming more and more on PC and slowly going all digital, PS4 were hard to find from what I heard and glad I pre-order it too.

Truth be told, midnight launches should only be for picking up next-gen consoles nowadays but however, with the power of Amazon, who really needs to go midnight launches at Gamestop? Gamestop got so bad, it's not even worth going their at midnight anymore and they never get the right shipments for those who pre-order now. Glad I went digital gaming and thank God for Amazon.

Yes! Did it one time for the Nintendo GameCube. It was released during my college years. If there was a major release in a college town, you had to go the extra measure to make sure you’d get the game you wanted.

Waited in line for 12 hours. It was actually a memorable experience. Got to meet interesting people. Glad I decided to tough it out.

Yeah I went for GTA IV and Fallout 3. It was okay. I worked retail swing-shift at the time and there was an Applebees nearby, so my friends and I had a few drinks and then went to gamestop.

I do remember a lot of people in line smelled awful.

MGS4.

There was a huge line up at Walmart and bestbuy for it. Same with ebgames.

You guys can talk trash all you want but it was an awesome game and lived up to the hype. Deserved the 10/10.

Back in the day for GTA IV and San Andreas. And recently for the Switch Lite, but that didn't involve any waiting. Hell, that was my first time setting foot in a Game Stop for many many years.

No, I was like 12 at the peak of them and afterwards it was only a handful of stores that did them.

Nah i'm usually up real early in the morning for work (before sun up) so going out to a store at midnight to buy a game is pointless for me.

A few times. The last was Uncharted 4. Time before that was the PS4 launch where I was 7th in line. Pretty cool.

Most memorable was Resident Evil 5. The Gamestop employees tried to convey mood with encouraging costumes, putting red see through paper over the lights. They even had a tub in the middle of the store with mannequin parts, "blood" stained ice and soda for everyone in the tub.

The downfall was they busted out a smoke machine. It set off the fire alarms. Fire department came out. They were not able to shut the alarms off. The manager put a box over the alarm to help with the noise. Put a second and then a third box over the alarm and sealed it with duct tape. Actually reduced the noise about 70% so not bad.

Still had a lot of fun as they had other RE games playable. The comradery amongst the fans was great.

I don't do midnight launches anymore as I just don't care about playing a game the second it's possible anymore. Plus, to be frank, many gamers need better hygiene. Shower regularly guys... just saying.

Nope. And I've never missed out on anything I want by not doing that. I have gone to several game events, but waiting in line for hours in the middle of the night doesn't sound fun.

Coolyfett did the morning line for the SNES Classic at Bestbuy. It was a cool experience. Lots of different types of people in the line.

I’ve been to a number of midnight game releases as well as system launches. Some were Halo 2, 3, Reach, ODST, 4, Gears of War 2, 3, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2, 3, Black Ops 2, and 3. I really enjoyed going to those but don’t really do that anymore and just pick up the game later on that day instead.

Loads of times. I love doing it for movies as well. The whole process of organizing with friends on when and where you'll go, getting there early enough to have a good spot, waiting around and interacting with people that are just as eager you to try/watch something you hope is good enough to go through this whole process. It's wonderful to me!

It's just too bad there hasn't been anything worthy of doing it for in so many years.

PS2

PS3

PS4

360

Halo 2

GTA4

Several CODs

WoW

Red dead 1&2

For Halo 2 there were a couple Yahoo's dressed like Mario and Luigi in front of me lighting stuff on fire! It got silly

When Halo 2 was released I went to one. I want to say that was the last long line midnight launch I attended too.

Nope.

If I'm determined to play a game on launch day, I'll either pre-load a digital copy or get a physical copy delivered to my house.

I went to a few back when I was exclusively a console gamer.

Fable 2

Xbox 360

PS3

Mass Effect 1 and 2

PS4

Those are the ones that stand out in my mind.

Havent been to any recently, buy most of my games digitally. (I game mostly on PC, console games are still physical)

I went a few times back when I had the Xbox 360. Only games that come to my mind are Grand Theft Auto IV and Fallout 3. Fallout 3 was such an amazing experience for me playing it on the Xbox 360. I loved everything about that game I remember enjoying Grand Theft Auto IV but man I hated how blurry the game looked and this was before I even had a decent PC for gaming since I was more a console gamer.

Funny how times change. Now I wait months after release before picking up a game unless it's something I'm really hyped into playing and can overlook the issues that it may have on launch day.

Honestly, I don't think I ever have. Even if I did, I'd probably get home & be far too tired to play it yet.

Used to every now and then, but not since Dark Souls 2. It was awkward because everyone else was there for a much more popular game that I didn't care about.

Nowadays I can have the game pre-loaded and be playing right at midnight.

I went to the GTA San Andreas release. Saw the line down the storefronts to the driveway and onto the sidewalk and never bothered parking. Came back the next day around noon. Never even thought about going to another.

Too many times.. too many times.

They don't really have them around here anymore though... I think maybe my local Gamestop is one of the ones that might get the ax. They used to have them all time. Now they don't even for the most high profile games.. unless it's like one of 2 a year. Something like Red Dead, GTA, not sure about CoD.

I have never seen a reason to go. I usually purchase new games online through Best Buy and I get the game in the mail the day of and sometimes the day prior to the release. Sadly, I cannot remember the last time I actually played a game the day of its release because of family and work. Regardless, if a game is bought the day of or three months to a year after its release it is still going to be the same game. The only difference is the added DLC and updates due to bugs at release. Plus, if you wait for a game after a certain amount of time, the game tends to be less in price. Games are expensive and I do not feel like paying $60 plus for a game all the time.

Before digital, it was the best way to get a game at launch.

I will still go to Halo or console midnight launches.

The last one I did was for Skyrim at a Best Buy in South Dakota. There was about 30-50 other folks waiting as well in the freezing cold. They were better in the cold, more Nord like, unlike the Californian in me which did not enjoy the waiting in the sub-zero temp very much.

Did it for some World of Warcraft addon to see what such an event is like. It was either for Burning Crusade or Catacylsm... don't remember. Anyway, it was horrible. Hundreds of people, standing in the cold, waiting forever and in the end you couldn't even play the damn game because the servers crashed.

When I was younger. The last midnight release I went to was RDR 2, but I find myself so tired that I don’t enjoy the game as much as if I were well rested. It’s not enjoyable for me to force myself to stay awake and play through bleary eyes. Being younger it’s not such a bother, but I’ve chilled a bit in age and want to be in a state I can enjoy games to their fullest.

One one time when Super Smash Bros. Brawl was released in 2008 at GameStop. I had to drive several miles in the early morning to reach the local GameStop to pick up my copy.
