Has there ever been a game that won "game of the year" that almost everyone agreed upon? Critics and fans alike?

Has there ever been a game that won “Game of the year” that almost unanimously was agreed upon by both the critics and fans alike of deserving that title?

I’m not making this exclusive to games in the last 5 or so years either. I can see strong cases being made for something like super Mario bros 1 or 3. Maybe even a Zelda title like Ocarina of time.

I understand that we are talking about something opinion based here so you will never have 100% agreement but still the question stands.

My guess is that OOT is the game that fits this the best, but I could be wrong.

It was crushed by RDR and Mass Effect 2: http://gotypicks.blogspot.se/2010/10/2010-game-of-year.html

I dont think it was goty on this site back in 2006, but Okami got a lot of goty awards from other sources.

It is at 93 for both critic and user scores. Very hard for a game to be that high for both.

I've only seen but a handful of people dislike Half Life 1, Half Life 2 and Max Payne, all GOTY winners.

I think Overwatch is closest. Game is a masterpiece. Youll hear your typical pessimistic whiners who complain it dont have no boobs, blood, or bad words. But them haters are such a small minority we just laugh at them.

Universally, no such thing.

Close as humanly possible: I'd imagine most people would be hard pressed to argue Ocarina of Time wasn't deserving. You might have people that think Thief 1 or Starcraft deserved it more, but not necessarily because Ocarina was unworthy.

@jg4xchamp: Ocarina is still considered one of the greatest games of all time. Even its re-release years later with barely any changes comes with high praise.

Unanimously? Hell no, especially not in recent years.

The closest and most recent I can think of is maybe Journey? 2012 was a pretty shitty year If I recall correctly, so it probably only had a few games that would contend with it.

Witcher 3 and TLOU are the strongest in recent memory. I also recall Skyrim being widely trumpeted, though 2011 was a competitive year among AAA games (UC3, Arkham City, Dark Souls, among others).

The Witcher 3 in terms of both Editors choice and Reader's choice, that's agreed upon on most websites, there are exceptions, but that's definitely the strongest I remember.

Closest game to that which I can think of was probably The Last of Us.

I don't really recall any of the GotY talk before about 2005.

Half-Life back in 98-99.

I remember many gaming sites and magazines at the time gave it GOTY awards, and fans alike loved the game which spawned a ton of mods.

I dont think its making anything for Nintendo and I dont think they've been updating for a while now. What I'm thinking of is the core game though, which you love and I hate, so we're at a stalemate there.

But sure, Ocarina. That game swept the industry and gamers alike.

SMG2 and to a slightly lesser extent, TW3, also cleaned up shop in recent years.

I'd say TLOU, but that one was a bit lopsided. Far more praise from the industry itself than from the gaming community.

Yeah because that's totally why people play videogames. No boobs, blood or bad words they take it right back to the shop.

Maybe they don't like multiplayer or they don't like games with really shit graphics (is Overwatch really a current gen game?) but hey carry on with your superiority complex ignore everyone laughing at you they don't mean it really. Have a nice day.

mario galaxy in 2007, RE4 in 2005, and ocarina of time in 1998 are indisputable tho

SMG2 didn't really kill it though, both Mario Galaxy games didn't win the most GOTYs. Mario is just one of those games on SW most people had shitty arguments against, so people arguing against were either dumb as **** or just had to settle for "not my cup of tea". Because as a work of game design, both Galaxy games are amazing, and like genuinely amazing. Not pretty, but the gameplay is suspect "amazing" the way stuff like The Witcher 3 is.

But as far as media wide, Mass Effect 2 and Red Dead killed it in 10 GOTY wise, and I think 07 was a bit closer, but it was spread across a few games: Bioshock, COD4, Portal, Mario Galaxy.

And all things considered I don't think The Last of Us was anywhere close to a bad pick, I think it's genuinely a very good game. It probably was the best game that year outside of maybe Dota 2 from that year.

It's too political and competitive to ever be accepted by everyone. Also, it's not an accolade that seems to be that well respected.

i think world of warcraft in 2004 would have had a lot of support for game of the year. But you can't get everyone to agree on something.
