Halo Infinite is reportedly the most expensive video game project ever

The budget set by Microsoft and 343 Industries for Halo Infinite is reportedly more than $500 million, according to German website Xbox Dynasty. This would make it the most expensive video game ever produced, though it should be noted that the amount is said to only be for its development, and does not yet include marketing costs.

microsoft is richest company on earth. they are financing insane amount of money in this game. will see at E3 where the all budget is going.

I think that was debunked. Gimme a few.

Edit: Can't find it. A thread at the cesspool ResetEra supposedly debunked the rumour via Frank O'Connor, but I can't find anything direct.

Doom is a mindless shooter for people who can think and likes the ideas of colors and shapes.

No story, no mechanics, nothing new. It's like playing a game out of the 90's.

Yeah, this has got to be a rumor. There's no way modern Xbox could make a return on an investment like that, especially after marketing.

@ghosts4ever: Seriously, you are the most annoying person on these forums... and that's quite an achievement.

Anyway, that number doesn't sound right... like said above, they'd never make a decent return on that (they'd be lucky to make their money back). I have no doubt it's an expensive endeavour but, because they did have to build a new engine too.

#13 Posted by cainetao11 (36592 posts) -

@n64dd: I didn’t mean worth. I mean richest as in revenue intake. Two different things.

Well certainly more than doom which was made with a budget of 50 cents.

And? They can pour $1 billion and still get a trash product, example: Destiny. Why not split that into new IP's

Revenues and stocks are two different things. Microsoft doesn't even make as much revenue as several big oil companies.

lol we'll have to wait and see how the campaign of Halo 6 turns out. I enjoy both series and I don't like comparing them. The main criticisms of Halo 5 were directed at the campaign, the multiplayer component obliterates the multiplayer of DOOM, it's not even close. I played DOOM 2016 multiplayer 1 hour max I think. That's unfortunate because although I mostly want DOOM for the campaign, I actually enjoyed DOOM multiplayer on PC back in the day.

Halo 6 will be a much bigger blockbuster than Doom Eternal, if done right the campaign will crush it in addition to the multiplayer providing near unlimited replay value, which Doom cannot even touch, as far as I'm concerned. But I still love DOOM and look forward to the next installment.

As for the OP I read about that budget news too and that's cool, but the money needs to be well spent.....a big budget doesn't guarantee an incredible game, but I have confidence it will be a great Halo title overall.

You haven't played either game so, I am not sure how you can draw that conclusion.

LOL. Are the devs still 343?? Then it’s gonna suck

#24 Posted by speedytimsi (965 posts) -

No way...that's gotta be a rumor

Given that this game is probably gonna be on Xbox game pass I'm sure people are just gonna use a trial or spend 10 bucks just to play it.

All that money blown on Infinite and they can't be bothered to add a simple split screen mode to Halo 5. That's MS for ya.

Plausible. Halo is one of gaming’s most important franchises. Besides software, it sells consoles, Xbox Live, Gamepass, future services, and the Microsoft brand. It’s most likely a bargain of a budget given how many offshoots it markets.

But I thought GTA5 had a 500+ budget already?

GTA had that budget including marketing.

#30 Posted by Random_Matt (4241 posts) -

Halo sells consoles apparently.

#31 Posted by BoxRekt (1656 posts) -

MS would only do this if it WASN'T going to be a Gamepass title OR making it exclusive to their new Gamepass ULTIMATE scheme that is a $14.00 per mo sub.

Even with being on Gamepass Ultimate, they still wouldn't spend that much money because MS doesn't want to invest money into games they only want to profit off them.

MS would NEVER risk more money developing a game they had no guarantee they would make back after release.

This leak is obviously fake! GTAV development and marketing budget was roughly $265 million, therefore I don't see how it's possible for Halo Infinite to have anything near $500 million budget. Halo Infinite would have to sell around 10 million (insane number for a launch exclusive game) just to start making a profit. (not considering Game Pass, obviously) Unless it's full of Microtransactions, I don't see how that would be possible.

With all of that said, I can't wait to buy Halo Infinite on my PC.

Who cares about the story, when the game is so utterly boring. Doom all the way.

#36 Posted by Mandzilla (4090 posts) -

Wow even more expensive than Star Citizen or Death Stranding? I'm impressed. Don't know the actual budget for those games, but always figured it was pretty high.

#37 Posted by AJStyles (900 posts) -

You can have all the money in the world, but if your team is incompetent you won’t make a great game.

#38 Posted by GarGx1 (10928 posts) -

Not sure I believe that, especially when they are saying that this purely development and does not including marketing (AAA marketing is often 2 to 3 times the development budget)

@cainetao11@n64dd: What would you guys invest in? The largest company? The company with the largest revenue? Or perhaps the company with the largest profit margin?

Amazing how many different ways that big business find to claim success.

Yes.

@GarGx1: well in terms of this industry, I’ve owned SNE, NTDOY, MSFT, TTWO for many years so my money has investment has grown well.

Recently I bought a couple of Marijauna stocks that look like they could make a run soon.

#41 Posted by JoshRMeyer (10438 posts) -

If true, that's a lot of Gamepass subscriptions needed to pull a profit. That day one thing MS is doing is great for the consumer but I have no clue how it pays for a AAA game, especially if they start producing more with the studios they acquired.

#42 Posted by Raining51 (1122 posts) -

Really? Didn't see that coming.

#43 Posted by BoxRekt (1656 posts) -

@raining51 said:

You actually have to be really stupid if you honestly believe that for one second.

Gamepass isn't enough to return the development of something like that and MS brass only care about making money so unless MS is going to charge to play Halo Infinite monthly like an MMO the chances of this are 0.

#44 Posted by mrbojangles25 (44043 posts) -

Wasn't the initial budget of SW: The Old Republic like 600 million dollars? Tough to imagine any game being that expensive.

Spendtacular

#46 Posted by BigBadBully (2163 posts) -

MS going to kill it, hearing rumblings of more studios being acquired. Gonna be like a new game coming every few months along with more 3rd party support. Can see why MS can afford splurging on game development when you got Gamepass/Xcloud/PC all cashing in, that Xbox live eco system is thriving.

#47 Posted by npiet1 (2308 posts) -

I could see this. Halo is the flag ship of Xbox. It doesn't matter if they make a loss. People have short attention span. If this game is great the next release of xbox IP's are going to get hype. Its about rep at this point and not money.

I hope it’s going to be good, I did not like Halo 5 much. I kept running out of ammo and had to use Alien guns which I am not fond off
