Trailer:

Original:

https://www.dsogaming.com/news/its-official-half-life-alyx-is-real-and-will-be-revealed-this-thursday-november-21st/

OK I know it's a VR game but it means that the Source 2 engine is almost done and this VR game will be used to test it for bugs. Not to mention, it also shows that Valve is interested in Half Life universe again and ready to move on to bigger projects as secret conversation with Geoff Kieghly revealed few days ago.

I love Valve games. Day of Defeat, Half Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress, ... literally anything they touch is gold.

I couldn't give a rats ass about Artifact or VR shit though.

@Pedro: I'd probably play that.

Or heck if it's moddable I'm sure the community would find ways to play this in a traditional way.

Meh. I gave up on Half-Life some time ago. This is not the way to do it, Valve.

Valve has been pushing for a VR future for a while now focusing resources on their own headset instead of actual games. Makes sense that they would use Half-Life as a flagship title for that purpose. Who knows, maybe they can pull this off and prove that VR has actually a bright future if done right.

The real question is whether this is a proper Half-Life game (maybe even 3?) or just a tech demonstration.

It's been 15 years since Half Life 2.

If there was gonna be another Half Life game it would either have been this or a mobile game.

They won't make a half life 3.

This is probably going to be pretty epic. Valve has been a huge proponent for VR and they have yet to release a VR game. Having it set in the Half-Life universe after the series has been on ice for so long should not be overlooked either. I look forward to the reveal.

I’m not into VR or PC gaming so this announcement does nothing for me. A proper Half-Life 3 with console versions would be something that would interest me though.

This is still a problem for Valve, the game could be a gamer-changer for the platform, but it's a steep price point, and as soon as this fucking thing is released the prices for cheaper headsets will probably rise at the opportunity rather than lower.

Yeah, most probably. Then again, why make a Half-Life title based upon a character who was a central role in Episode 2?

Considering Alyx was a visual showcase for Source 2 engine and advanced facial expressions in Half-Life 2, my best guess is they're gonna make a benchmark title for their own VR headset. A showcase title with no real depth or substance.

I would prefer a traditional HL game as well, but maybe they have done something special with this game. Shooting things in VR is fun, but you are usually limited to a stationary position. A lot of the VR shooters just seem like enhanced Virtua Cop/Time Crisis games. They still haven't figured out compelling traversal mechanics. The whole teleporting thing is not natural at all and using the traditional control stick to move leads to motion sickness.

You should play ARTIKA.1 from your boys at 4A Games...

Am i the only one who thinks that Valve is fully aware of how unwinnable the situation is with Half-Life 3? I'm pretty sure that Artifact, Dota Underlords and Half-Life VR exists because Valve wants to go back into making video games while also knowing that if they're to make HL3, we'd have a situation worse than Duke Nukem Forever and when HL3 fails to meet expectations, it would be the biggest disappointment in all of gaming history.

It would be at such a point where angry fans will send death threats to Valve and the few folks that are within driving distance to Valve's offices will probably do as much damage as they can with knives, baseball bats and molotov cocktails, with the one guy with a firearms license using the melee guys as cover.

Honestly, the best course of action would be for Valve to either not touch Half-Life 3 at all, or sell the rights to someone someone stupid enough to take the blame for supposedly ruining a game that's doomed to fail anyways followed by their subsequent deaths by angry fans with makeshift weapons.

Alternatively, Valve CAN make Half-Life 3 with their current set of resources, fail to meet expectations that have been building up since 2007 and hire rooftop snipers to respond to angry fans wanting to carry out their death threats. But that's probably not gonna be good for PR even if self-defense laws favour Valve.

HL3 does not have to be revolutionary. Very few games are these days. It just has to be a good game and fans will be happy. Valve is more than capable of making good games.

You should check out Project Borealis which is a fan made game based on Marc Laidlaw's script for HL3...

@Stevo_the_gamer: Yes. Technology has moved on since we last saw a Half Life game.

Laptops replaced desktop PCs.

Tablets replaced laptops

Streaming boxes replaced consoles

Mobile phones replaced handhelds

That last one being true actually hurts :(

@BassMan:You have a point but let me put it this way: Duke Nukem Forever would have been shrugged off as a mediocre Halo clone if it weren't for the hype but because the game had a 15 year development time, it was hyped beyond what is realistic for any game developer to accomplish.

Or better yet, here's what it'd take for a game as hyped up as Half-Life 3 will need should it get announced:

  • Funding from the United States government. The rest of the list should explain why
  • The core game is developed by scientists from Japan and 20-something year old university graduates from Sweden. With a game as hyped up as HL3, it's definitely going to need the world's greatest scientists to figure out how to satisfy that hype
  • Boss battles are handled by interns from PlatinumGames, Inc. The weakest point of the Half-Life series were its boss battles and for a game as hyped up as HL3, bosses on par with HL1 and HL2 aren't acceptable. Plus, i feel as if good boss design is inherently Japanese.
  • Weapon design courtesy of Tripwire Interactive. Say what you will about Killing Floor 2's monetization models, but it's reasonable to say that TWI puts a lot of detail in how their guns are used, even going as far as to mocap finer details such as a wobbling barrel or the rattling of a rail attachment in slow-motion sequences. That level of detail in a Half-Life game would definitely be a welcome treat.
  • Soundtrack is a celebration of gaming as a whole, with industry veterans and small-time composers including Alexander Brandon (Tyrian, Deus Ex), Inon Zur* (Crysis 1), Michael McCann (Deus Ex, XCOM 2012), Michiel van den Bos (Age of Wonders 1 and 3), Nobuo Uematsu (Final Fantasy), Frank Klepacki (Command and Conquer), Junichi Nakatsuru (SoulCalibur, Ace Combat) and Michiru Yamane (Castlevania and Bloodstained) to name a few. It would have to put Super Smash Bros Brawl's OST to shame. I know people will defend Kelly Bailey's works, though a lot of his tracks in Half-Life 2 came off to me as him simply paying the bills rather than putting a lot of love in the work he does. Sure, you get like... One or two but barring Triage at Dawn and Apprehension and Evasion, most of his work was ultimately forgettable.

*this is more of my personal bias cuz i never found any of his works in Dragon Age or Fallout to be memorable. Crysis 1 had the most memorable soundtrack out of everything he did tbh.

@flashn00b: there is more to it than that.

The budget of developing say Artifact, compared to the budget of developing a AAA singleplayer FPS game (Half Life in this case). That's in a whole different league.

Half life 3 would cost years of work and would cost millions of dollars. Artifact and Underlords cost a fraction of that and are probably made in less than a year.

This spin off has a high budget too, of that I am sure. But Valve will probably make that money back because it's a way for them to sell VR headsets.

@BassMan: After Episode 2, it wasn't as good as I hope at the time and afterwards, Valve wanted to do HL3 but never went to development and when they got rich due to Steam, I stop caring for HL series and after all this time, they want to come back and making games now? Sorry but I move on from HL series.

That much , i understand though when was the last time a game needed its own damn science team just because of a hype bubble that could easily envelope the Asteroid Belt?

Half Life 2 was over 15 years ago now, people have moved on. I've played better games in the mean time. Loads of them in fact.

That is a funny list, but in all seriousness... hype is a bunch of bullshit. All that matters is the quality of the game. Duke Nukem Forever took.... well... forever, but it was a failure because it wasn't a very good game. That was a disaster project that had been restarted several times and Gearbox bought the rights and salvaged the scraps together for a release. Had it been a good game, it wouldn't have mattered how long it took to come out. At the end of the day, games are judged by their quality compared to not just previous games, but compared to all other games available. Hype is just noise created by fans and it shouldn't be a distraction to the developers. They just need to focus on making a quality game.

Cheap? Valve is one of the richest private companies in the world and so far they haven't made any 'cheap' product, be it games, VR, OS, Controller or Steam it self.

Agreed, I've seen some Team Fortress 2 skins go for $4.000 on the steam marketplace.

Valve is anything but cheap.

I am not happy with the lack of games from Valve either, but if they announced HL3, I would be just as excited now as I would be back then. No sense in holding a grudge. It's like one of your favorite bands getting back together for a new album. All is forgiven as long as the game is good. :)

@flashn00b: there is no hype for half life 3.

Half Life 2 was over 15 years ago now, people have moved on. I've played better games in the mean time. Loads of them in fact.

If Valve were to announce HL3, interest in the Half-Life universe would skyrocket to the point where the hype bubble could swallow entire planets.

@BassMan: I'd seem weird to announce Half Life 3 now.

The only reason Valve is bringing back the Half Life IP now is for their VR headset.

They are definitely pushing VR. However, this may renew their mojo for Half-Life in general. They have had other interests over the years to keep them busy and they said they are focused on making more games now. So, there is still hope for more traditional HL games.

If HL:A does well then there will only be more HL VR games. They're not going to suddenly take the franchise that's known for breaking new ground and have a massive step back for HL3.

It's simple. If we ever get HL3, it will be another VR game but probably with BCI input or haptic gloves as the new gameplay innovation to revolutionize things again.

So, the game can't be made unless it is revolutionary? Why does HL3 have to be a revolutionary game? What other game has this expectation/burden?
