Half Life 1/Black Mesa is too hard on later levels. Half Life 2 is fun for many factors like going crazy with Gravity Gun.
Half Life 1/Black Mesa or Half Life 2, which is better game?
Well?

Half life 1. better gunplay, better AI, More harder but xen part suck. black mesa is different thing.
Half life 2. Better story, level design, pacing, although its more easier. like even on the hardest difficulty its a piece of cake.
I'd say Half Life 2 is the most consistent, yes
All the levels are excellent and none of them stand out from eachother as especially bad or good.
Half Life 1 has some serious down time, but honestly I never disliked on a rail or black mesa inbound. Neither did I ever dislike Xen.
Half Life Black Mesa then reimagines some of these parts (would've kept it 1:1 personally) and also improves on some things.
What's cool is that you can mod Half Life 2 slightly for it to hold up a bit more, and then play Black Mesa and Half Life 2 as one continous game.
Half-Life 2 is better in every way.
Had everything the first one had, and more, and in higher quality.
Quite an impressive feat given how great the original Half-Life is.

This is a myth my freind. People mistake "fast" and "more damage" for better AI. Went back and tested this out a year or two back. Simply not true.
The AI in both games combat wise act the same. The difference is Combine shuffle at a snail pace, fall easily and inflict soy damage regardless of difficulty, at least early game.
Additionally, combine will melee the player at close range, move from grenades. Friendly AI will seek and pick-up health kits and weapons and avoid mines etc...
It isn't until the introduction of the Hunter that land-based enemies become comparable to Halflife's marines in damage and manoeuvrability, even down to the presentation.
In Halflife 2, combine are initially presented as a shooting gallery for the player. Something that flops over.
Both the marines and Hunter are introduced to be intimidating. With a level of build up. It becomes instantly apparent they are more challenging than other enemies in the game within the first fire-fight.
The fire-fights in Alyx are probably the best. It's utilizes hot-spots to reward the player with John Woo style explosions. It never gets old. Combined with more viseral "oomph" to the weapons Halflife 2 lacked.
The weapons compared to Halflife 2 are pleasing to use as opposed to "do the job", with upgrades working in tandem with exploration akin to Resident Evil upgrades.
Even fighting something as typically mundane in the series as head-crabs (a whatever enemy) becomes an engaging experience.
However Alyx suffers from the exact same problem of Halflife 2, and typically most later Valve games that aren't multiplayer, in that they are focused tested with soccer moms to avoid frustration.
Valve indulgently add their "developer commentary" when in reality the game would be better served with an NG+ to create a secondary, or more, player experience that's more engaging and adds replay value.
Developer commentary just feels to me, they are jerking themselves off in the mirror with sticky pat on the back. Most gamers don't give a shit.
I'd say they are all in the same boat. Black Mesa is nice since they updated some pieces of HL1 that didn't make sense level design wise (and redid Xen), but it was certainly a step back in the soundtrack department. HL2 is also a masterpiece that is just going for a different atmosphere than HL1.
For nostalgias sake I'll say HL1 since it felt more cramped and confined. You were trapped and trying to escape. HL2 was more of a run run run feel in the first half and didn't have that same claustrophobic feel that I loved about the first.
The first time i tried HL1 was like in 2005 after playing a bunch of HL2, and it felt so outdated i stopped playing it within an hour, so HL2 wins by default.
HL2 easily. But the whole series is excellent bar none. Nothing comes close. As a developer Valve is in a league of its own.
STALKER 1 - Better game.

STALKER 1 - Better game.
even STALKER 1 lab x 18 part is better than entire Half life 2, come on.
Half life 2 is masterpiece. almost as good as Metro 2033. but its nowhere near STALKER 1.
STALKER 1 wont be surpassed anytime soon. even though Im hyping STALKER 2 but it wont be better than 1.
@ghosts4ever: Sadly Stalker needs mods to be good. And work.
not bad thing when it comes to Stalker.
STALKER 2 will need mods to be as good as STALKER 1.
Black Mesa is fantastic, and love the work they did but I still lean on HL2 being superior. But that episode 2 ending still got me mad disappointed... 15 years later...
@ghosts4ever: Stalker series got janky gameplay mechanics , I mean unpolished rough game series. Poor gunplay, Poor AI. But if Stalker was developed by some big studio and polished it would have been good as entire series got terrific atmosphere.
@uninspiredcup: thats why im saying it will need mods and it wont be as good.
But still hyping because immersion and new graphic king.
