Grand Theft Auto V sales hit 80m units

The juggernaut that is Grand Theft Auto V has now surpassed 80m sales, according to publisher Take-Two. In the company's Q4 and fiscal year earnings release, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick confirmed that the title has now sold at least another 5m copies since the company's last earnings report in February, taking its total sell-in figure to an impressive 80m since its launch in September 2013.

Indeed, he revealed to MCV that physical sales are still the driving force behind the title's seemingly unstoppable success, standing at 75 per cent compared to 25 per cent digital sales: "What's driving this is that consumers love this title and want more of it," he added.

Other companies should take notice. This is how you do business. Not this yearly releases nonsense.

Its because even non gamers play GTA. proof is many of my friends and cousins are not into gaming but they know what GTA is. and some of them play too.

I should probably finish it someday... came with my PS4 BF bundle, and I liked it a lot at first. But GTA games always get kind of stale and I wind up wandering off

Great game and well deserved. It's still a bummer that Red Dead got delayed, but I'm sure it will be great.

I picked up two copies myself, one for PS3 then again on XB1, and I didn't even think it was that great TBH.

I'll say it was actually great on PC but however, I still prefer San Andreas then V but overall, playing it on PC is were it's at.

I double dipped. Would triple dip if it got released on the Switch. Great game.

But why does take two not have any games coming out this year except for yearly NBA and WWE ?

I mean it makes no sense: don't they have any dev teams?

I was fine with it as far as the technical accomplishment on consoles, problem is you have this huge world and it doesn't seem packed with activities as I'd expect for something of its size. I haven't played online, I know that's big, maybe that's where the action is. I just feel the overall game is kind of lacking in the SP department.

I know GTA IV gets a lot of crap but I think for example it made a big deal having those two meaty expansions to the main game. GTA V disappointingly never got something like this to really add to it. I think online is a big focus, I once read they're making more money through online micro-transactions than they are through actual game sales, so I can see why they're so focused on the online aspect of the game.

I'm wondering the same. They have made billions of dollars with GTAV and yet we're unlikely to see the next GTA this generation.

Congrats.... well-deserved. For me it all started with GTA3 on the PS2, a fascinating and thrilling game. You can go hang out in the streets of a city at night, all from the comfort of your home. As far as I'm concerned they wrote the book on virtual sandbox cities.

Looking forward to the next entry, they did the 3 interconnecting campaigns in GTA5 which I thought was cool, but I wouldn't mind a return to form for GTA6.... focus on stronger gameplay, more detailed world, and more interesting missions.

I mean, Take Two can't really "ask" for anything more from R* in particular. As for the other studios, who knows.

R* with GTA Online keeps on making millions upon millions for them, that's why they're allowed to take their time. They're in a great situation "just" making content for that and making easy money. That said, RDR2, despite the delay, likely cost a ton and took quite the massive team to produce too, so it's not like they aren't making other things. They're just not in a rush, really.

And that also has an effect on the sales of the game. I mean, which other 2013 game is still selling ~5 million copies per quarter, right now with a price tag that ranges from 30€/$ to 60€/$ (yup, some retailers still ask 60€/$ for the game, right now!) ?

Bought on 360 and then on the PS4 to see the difference, I've almost bought on the PC a few times now on sales. I bet a chunk of those sales came from multiple buys, rockstar timed it perfectly.

Not even remotely comparable. One was bundled for a few months, if that. The other was bundled for a few years.

NIce numbers for a multiplatform game. Would it sell that many if it was an exclusive to one system?

Yeah I guess it's word of mouth that does it for GTA V, as you can't find commercials for this years old game.

But I mean Take Two has so many other studios, so many IP: stuff I really love like Vietcong and Bioshock.

It just seems that they are not so good at managing their studios, if all they can push out this year is just two yearly franchises :/

This game literally makes this whole gen look like shit by comparison lol. That's why it keeps topping the charts 4 years later.

GTAIV was so bad I ignored this one. Looks pretty much the same to me.

3D GTA has never been my thang.. I'd take GTA1/GTA2/GTA:CW over those any day.

Beat GTA since Vice City IMO. Well done. Haven't finished it on pc but already got my moneys worth with the many many hours of fun i had with it.

@KBFloYd: Wii sports was also a pack in game on a console that sold over 100 million, kinda makes those numbers less impressive.
