Google is opening up their Maps APIs to game developers ahead of GDC 2018.

The real world as your playground: Build real-world games with Google Maps APIs

The mobile gaming landscape is changing as more and more studios develop augmented reality games. In order to mix realities, developers first need to understand the real world — the physical environment around their players. That’s why we’re excited to announce a new offering for building real-world games using Google Maps’ tried-and-tested model of the world.

Game studios can easily reimagine our world as a medieval fantasy, a bubble gum candy land, or a zombie-infested post-apocalyptic city. With Google Maps’ real-time updates and rich location data, developers can find the best places for playing games, no matter where their players are.

Completely customize your games

To make it easy to get started, we’ve brought the richness of Google Maps to the Unity game engine. We turn buildings, roads, and parks into GameObjects in Unity, where developers can then add texture, style, and customization to match the look and feel of your game. This means that they can focus on building rich, immersive gameplay without the overhead of scaffolding a global-scale game world.

Reminds me of Tileproxy which I used with Flight Simulator X back in 2008. This new method is better though with the rendered 3D objects.

It doesn't have to be used to model exactly the real world, but it can be used to quickly generate detailed layouts that developers can use for their games.

Jacoby says that one of the goals of the project was to help developers build detailed worlds using Maps data as a base to paint over. Developers can do things like choose particular kinds of buildings or locations — say, all stores or restaurants — and transform each one. A fantasy realm could turn all hotels into restorative inns, for instance, or anything else. “In this way you can create unique game environments that still feel connected to the real world,” says Patrick Donelan, lead engineer on the project.

There seems to be a lot of flexibility, but I'm curious to see the ways in which developers utilize this. As well, they're showing off more with a demo at GDC.

Sweet although the mobile app I'm making isn't a game I should be able to use this API for my intentions :)
