Because basically, Bioshock Infinite is downright the worst well received game in video game history. The gameplay is a mess, the story is a mess, and its take on racism and white nationalism is worthless at best and downright offensive at worst. And its reception proved how dumb gaming media and gaming culture actually was, and still is, as there are positive 10 year retrospectives on it.

Bioshock Infinite is basically kind of like a person who thinks he or she is smart and knowledgeable, but in reality is wrong about almost everything he or she says. But he or she just doesn't shut up. And yet, people think he or she is smart. That's the game and the media in a nutshell.

Its not about how it has two of the worst first person shooter enemies of all time, or how the gameplay interaction is shallow, or how idiotic the plot holes in its time traveler multi verse plot is, its about how Ken Levine knows nothing on race, religion, American history, and politics and it shows. The moral equating of the Founders and the Vox Populi is a fatal mistake you just cannot do. Nevermind, it seems that the religious and race themes have been dumbed down from prior ideas and it comes off as shallow and stupid. Or that these issues really didn't overall matter because multiverse and stuff. This game should of had a different creator, hell, even Jordan Thomas from Bioshock 2 at the helm, instead of Ken Levine, who now can't get his next game out the door, which showed in Infinite as things were radically changed from its inception.

Nevermind Burial At Sea is a train wreck that makes the Daisy twist even worse with a sloppy retcon or how dumb that story was. Or how how it ruins the first two games if it is made canon.

Gamespot has been really really stupid, like the Hogwarts review, but Gamespot has been smart today calling out Infinite in three separate articles.

Did it have flaws? Sure, but I enjoyed it and wouldn't mind playing the whole series again at some point.

I played the first one and it didn't hit the mark. Some nice ideas though.

Second one was more of the same. Still, I can get why some would like it.

Third had some limp DreamWorks, frou-frou vibe going on. I kept expecting them to break out into songs from Hamilton or something. Fine if you're into that, but, again, not for me.

Or maybe look at the three articles on this site, which goes through the things I have been saying for years.

More opinions. I don't really give a shit about the political elements in the game. It was a cool world, story was decent, and Elizabeth was a great side character. Sure, the gunplay and general gameplay was somewhat clunky, but I was able to look past that and enjoy the game. I gave it an 8/10 back in the day.

Some of the best writing in the AAA space, amazing world and atmosphere, absurd encounter design that feels like it doesn't belong in that specific game.

Have no idea why are we talking about it though. I guess MAGAs or Liberals disagreeing with something?

The writing is absolutely terrible and the encounter design is atrocious. Yes, even the detractors like the games atmosphere, but that is where agreements in.

The plot, the themes, and the setting are full of significant holes in logic, while the dialogue is a step back from past games.

And white liberals have race problems too.

I didn't think much of the plot. I remember when it released people treated it like the best Bioshock ever made. I seem to enjoy it more on repeated playthroughs but it's still my least favorite in series.

Anyhow, worst well received game in history has to be MGS4. It was awful when it released and it's awful in hindsight. I think the only reason it has never re-released is fear the game will have to face the critical firing squad without the same benefit of strict review contracts the first game benefited from.

Or how about that morally equating oppressors and oppressed is rightfully offensive.

How they handled Daisy actually was so unpopular with fans that Levine tried to retcon it in the DLC.

Get smart before you make claims, and don't use "woke" in a way that makes you sound like a white supremacist.

And non game journalists criticized how the game handled race issues far before game journalists.

Bioshock Infinite is an absolute masterpiece. One of the top 10 most well written stories in gaming (not quite TLOU level) but on par with other genre defining stories like Mass Effect 2.

the themes, atmosphere, narrative etc was all world class.

Your opinion is terrible.

I remember thinking the combat was bland and not particularly fun.

You're right though - the game wasn't anywhere near as smart as it wanted to be, and I remember the story suffering from heavy doses of bad writing and flawed logic.

Off the top of my head:

(1) the worldbuilding and the revolution storyline were a waste of time, because you leave that universe part-way through the story;

(2) Elizabeth says a bunch of rules that turned out to be wrong or silly (like how Booker can never defeat the Songbird in infinite universes, or how every infinite universe has to revolve around a man and a lighthouse), so we have no reason to believe her world view at the end is correct or infallible; and

(3) the whole drowning plan logically cannot work as the resolution of the storyline.

Overall, I remember feeling like it tried to introduce an infinite multiverse, and then try to bottleneck that multiverse in really stupid ways. Plus I remember not caring about any individual character or setting once they established that infinite parallel universes exist and so nothing that happens really matters.

The issue is that it's being critized because one character narrative doesn't fit the politics of some journalist.

So it's not really valid criticism unless you are one of those people that think character depth and nuance is less important than waving a political flag at the player.

Basically the problem is that a character that is a slave is also portrayed as morally questionable, which the journalist doesn't like.

But stories aren't always meant to be moral, and people in unfortunate situations can also be bad without that reflecting negatively on others that share the same unfortunate circumstances.

Ultimately all this will do, is increase attention on the game and consequently sales, just like the howarts legacy situation. Except this time the effect will be smaller as it's an older game.

First: Bioshock Infinite is not the worst well recieved game. Of the ones I have played, it would be either Persona 5, or GTA4. 2 10/10 scoring games that were only good for sleep aid.

Second: Hogwarts Legacy review was fair. The game was as banal as AAA games go. And more late reviews have been calling this crap out. Almost like the initial positive reviews was just the typical honeymoon period reviews.

That said, I do agree Bioshock infinite should be called out at any opportunity. That game is the representation of all that is wrong with AAA gaming back in Gen 7.

When I first played it, I quit probably about 25% through the game.

Came back to it maybe a year later and for some reason liked it much more and finished the game.

As I recall I'd say a score of 7 would seem reasonable.

Perhaps even an 8 if I got paid to say it. lol :P
