Golden Joystick awards: Resident Evil 2 awarded 'ultimate game' title

Resident Evil 2 has been named as the ultimate game of the year at the Golden Joystick awards.

The remake of the 1998 game takes place in the middle of a zombie apocalypse and was praised by critics and players.

The awards - which took place in London - are significant because they're mainly voted for by the public.

More than 3.5 million votes came in for 19 of the 24 categories in the award ceremony's 37th year.

Gaming legend Yu Suzuki, who spent decades at Sega but has more recently developed mobile games, won the Lifetime Achievement.

"Because my career started with the arcade game, the word joystick has a retro sound to it. So it's really such an honour," he tells Radio 1 Newsbeat.

"Nowadays, there are just so many different types of games in terms of diversity - there are smartphone games, consoles and the variety of games as well as the number of platforms.

"It is a very healthy environment."

Fortnite, which was named as ultimate game in 2018, won the best e-sports title and the game's maker Epic Games was named as studio of the year.

Fortnite player Ewok came top in the best streamer category.

The 13-year-old, who is deaf, recently became e-sports team Faze Clan's first female player. She's also just swapped streaming platform Twitch for Mixer.

EA battle royale game won as the best multiplayer game.

Resident Evil 2 won a second award for for its use of audio.

Other winners include Cyberpunk 2077, which comes out in April, as the most wanted game

The game made headlines at the E3 conference earlier this year as it announced Keanu Reeves in a starring role as Johnny Silverhand.

The mobile game of the year was BTS World, where you play as the manager of the K-pop boyband.

Well deserved. I don't think anybody expected RE2 to be as utterly brilliant as it was.

Awesome to see Resident Evil 2 Remake get GotY. Very well deserved indeed, the game was fantastic. So hyped for Resident Evil 3 Remake.

That's quite puzzling, given the fact that From Software usually does very well at the Golden Joystick Awards. The Dark Souls series won GOTY twice, with DS2 in 2014 and again with DS3 in 2016. Bloodborne also won 2 awards in 2015.

RE2 remake for goty... Yawn

The game is fantastic and is deserving of it but when a remake wins GOTY you know this generation is mostly garbage with a few exceptions.

Best game I played this year. I'm actually doing my second Leon run now, after all these months. Second Claire already done.

Huge difference between a remaster and a remake. I remember people bitching about remasters, not remakes. Hopefully remasters won't be needed next generation. I wanna play my Switch games on the next Nintendo. PlayStation seems to be a given, at least for PS4 games.

Why are you placing remakes along side remasters?

Anyways people complained about remasters back then, when the term basically meant a bare bones port of a last gen game.

the thing that's weird about this award is there's next to no story in day's gone. i got about 15 hours in before getting bored with nothing happening. either that or it's stretched wafer f*ckin thin and i didn't have the patience to see it develop into the year's best story.

all that really happens in the first 15 hours is your mate gets bitten on his arm and is bed bound, then a bit later on needs it amputating so has to be moved to another camp. that's about it amongst a load of fetch quests and a minimal backstory of trying to find clues to learn whether your wife survived.

i bought but haven't started the outer worlds. slightly worried if day's gone beats it for story then how bad must the outer world's story be

Pleased days gone got some recognition,one of the best games I played this year.

while re2 is a worthy winner, i think the one thing we can all agree upon is it's missing one of those assassin's creed / ubisoft style scan the environment / sonar vision mechanic things with ui prompts to scan a room for stuff to interact with. you see a room on your map that's red i.e. not yet complete, so you know there's something in there you still need to do, but there's too much of a reliance on using your brain to figure it out

Don't get why people were saying you can't give it remakes. This was more than a traditional remaster it was a complete remake from the ground up worthy winner.

Really? I knew a third person Resident Evil 2 would be incredible. Literally the first thing I thought when I played Resident Evil 4 was "imagine Resident Evil 2 with gameplay like this"

Outer Wilds is a really cool game.

I wouldn't worry that Days Gone got the best story as this industry has a tendency to suck on Sony if you know what I mean.

Outer Worlds should have 10x better gameplay and that's what really counts.

I haven't played RE2 remake yet, but it looks good. I feel Control is highly overrated and I am disappointed to see it win critics choice. The game is a 6.5/10 for me. Gameplay was OK, story sucked, boring level design with little variation, and the game was blurry as fuk.

Control is just another Quantum Break, but with a 'strong woman'. Both games have pretty much same metacritic user score. Both sold bad too. Control get extra point from todays woke people... lol

You have got to be freaking kidding me. Control is nothing like Quantum Break at all. Quantum Break was all about time powers and manipulating time itself, Control was all about psychic powers and felt like I was playing "Warehouse 13" video game that type of thing. Control is far better then Quantum Break even though I was okay with Quantum Break but Control was the best Remedy game I enjoy fully since Alan Wake. Control is my GOTY choice and that game has nothing to do with "Woke."

Not saying it is the same, meant it is just as poor lol. Good you enjoy it, yet it is not even close to GOTY.

Damn... just goes to show how bad this year has been. Don't get me wrong I loved RE2 when it first released and I haven't played the remake yet, but I don't really want to either. I mean, I'm sure it's good, but game of the year? I'm not bashing the game, but has that much really changed (not saying the original wasn't great.. because it's one of my favorite horror games of all time) to merit a game of the year award? I just kind of feel like that award should go to a new game... that's just me though.

Metro Exodus is far more of RE2 is. 20 hours long, epic story, characters, atmosphere.

It's true tho, they give so much free games away. no other publishers does it. With no strings attached.

Death Stranding wasn't eligible. It didn't come out in time for their awards.
