God of War wins big at DICE Awards 2019

The PS4 game won nine of 23 award categories, including Game of the Year

God of War, the open-world adventure game from Sony Interactive Entertainment and SIE Santa Monica Studio, was a big winner at the 22nd annual DICE Awards. The PlayStation 4 game took top honors in nine categories, including Game of the Year, at today’s award show.

In addition to winning Game of the Year, God of War won awards in game direction, game design, story, and art direction. The only other game to win multiple awards at DICE was action-platformer Celeste, which won action game of the year and outstanding achievement for an independent game.

The DICE Awards are held annually by the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS), which includes more than 30,000 members. In addition to handing out 23 awards for games and their creators, the AIAS also recognized Bonnie Ross, head of Halo developer 343 Industries, with the honor of being the 2019 recipient of the Academy’s Hall of Fame Award.

For those unaware DICE Awards are like the Oscars of video games. All the devs come together and vote and nominate the best games. It is a peer reviewed award unlike the VGAs and other televised awards.

I think God of War deserved the clean sweep over RDR2 and I'm glad it won. RDR2 got sluggish and old really fast on me while GOW remained consistently exhilarating throughout the experience. Discuss.

All fanboyism aside, god of war is a prime example of a beautifully polished game.

God of war is my gotg close second is botw.

I can’t argue with that. Replayed the game 3 times now. Great game.

Reminder, these people had Fallout 4 as GOTY over The Witcher 3.

So Quad is back with another alt and so far have been able to survive for 14 days. Mods sure are getting lazy. :D

This game pretty much cements the PS4's legacy. Excellent work by all involved.

I just recently bought it but havent played it yet, great to see it get so many awards.

Well deserved after the internet crapped on it when it was revealed, people cant handle change sometimes.

@navyguy21: While the games definitely good, I'd much rather play any of the other GoW games over it ( minus Ascension).

Watching how lems spin this should make for some prime entertainment.

It already has over 9 million players 4 months after release and sold 5 million copies in its first month.

He's a Nintendo fan. He's only programmed to buy and play Nintendo's first party games and absolutely nothing else. Half of Nintendo's game sales are legit purchases and the other half are scalpers trying to sell them back to each other.

The awards themselves was fine...

But the actual show was terrible. I watched it last night and it was a bunch of Californians whining about how unfair the world is.

Christopher Judge spent 15 minutes straight doing a slow monotone voice about how we need to support women and all this other political stuff. It was yawn inducing.

Every developer went up on stage and said something about agenda pushing, women, minorities etc.

Then they ended the night complaining about internet trolls calling us a vocal minority etc and that we are all terrible.

Cory Barlog and Greg Miller we’re shook last night at the end of the show. Sounds like they were reading comments throughout the show and had a meltdown at the end and HAD to say something.

Well, if they are reading this, just know, we are NOT a minority. We do have the power to change the industry for the better. If you want to agenda push in your games, we won’t buy them.

"the oscars of video games", doesn't mean much

I personally enjoy God of War. It's right up their with Horizon: Zero Dawn but I still enjoy Horizon: Zero Dawn though and the only thing I like about the new God of War is it's Norse Mythology.

I adore "Donut County" as well, but I'm thrilled to see "Florence" get the award for portable game. Such a gem!

That's impressive, especially considering the competition. When it comes to quantity of quality games, last year was just insanely good!

Oscars of videogames? So, a circlejerk for the most pompous and vain to get their rocks off in front of us?

Congrats for GOW. Still to this day I didn't even think they would've made such a big accomplishment for 2018.
