All the premature btitching and crying went nowhere and got proven wrong.

Comabt: GOW4 is by far far the best. I could simply just mash square to beat the previous games. Plus when you hit enemies with the axe/blades, you acually feel the impact in this one.

Camera: I couldn't stand the old camera because kratos and all the enemies was so fucking tiny and not under my control. Glad they changed that.

Story and characters: No explanation needed.

This games is like bloodborne on 5 steriods.

Glad that critics feels the same way with GOW4 being the highest rated.

The only complaint was the lack of major god fights but then again it wasnt until the third greek game that we beat the major gods.

So it makes sense that we dont just fight Thor, Odin, Loki in the 1st norse game.

Also people who complained about the blade of chaos can eat crow now. I knew all this bitching about the change was premature.

GoW 2 is the best. Best locations, best platforming, best battles, and just bad ass from start to finish.

None of the other GoW games gets even close on how great GoW 2 is. Be told, dolt.

Easily. There's no way they'll ever be able to go back to the old GoW formula after this, completely blows the others away. Gameplay, story, and content are on a completely different level.

It surpassed GoW 2 as Kratos' best adventure, which is no surprise seeing as it comes from the same director.

They got some big shoes to fill after God of War 2, but given this one is so different than previous entries I'm willing to forego drawing comparisons, judge this new one on its entirely new approach.

If they made a new character and not Kratos could they of called it a new IP?

Some of the best moments I've had so far was the fan service, those moments wouldn't be the same as a new IP. The most intriguing part of the story is that we know Kratos' backstory and what he did. There's one moment in particular so far that made me lose my mind.

From a gameplay standpoint it's still the general theme of past God of War games. It's an action adventure with a big focus on combat and puzzles where you play as a god of war, just in a new and bigger direction with a different mythology.

It's like saying Resident Evil 4, Metroid Prime, and Zelda: Breath of the Wild could've been new IPs. They can be new IPs, but why?

Someone should make a, "Share your Kratos" thread. Because the sheer amount of armor in this game is insane.

I disgaree. GoW1 is still my fav. It was an awesome greek tragedy (which later games sadly weren't). 2 was overall better, but I really missed the "greek tragedy" aspect of it. I still prefer the old gameplay over the new Souls-inspired one and I also like the Chaos Blades more than the Leviathan axe. I do like the new semi-open world approach though. It's a great game and it is refreshing after the series got really stale (already after GOW2 IMO), but it's nowhere close to GoW1/2

I think it's easily the best. The combat system in the previous games always compared poorly to other games with a similar style, like Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta, and Devil May Cry. My first thought when they removed the ability to jump, and therefore aerial attacks, was that they were making it even worse. They completely changed the combat system to where it plays like a different sort of game, though. The combat is much better than Souls games, which is what it compares more to now.

What surprised me most is how much it changes the formula but manages to feel very much like a GOW game. They pulled off making something new and yet very familiar. It plays like GOW but also doesn't play like GOW.

I can see where this comparison comes from but DS combat is more methodical and strategic. GOW is fast-paced and combo heavy. I wouldn't say it was better than combat in DS. In fact, I've often died in the new GOW trying to play it too much like DS. GOW still rewards the aggressive player whereas DS rewards the careful, patient gamer.

DS just doesn't throw as much at once as GOW does and doesn't really have enough flexibility with its combat that you would really be able to handle what GOW throws at you. It is pretty similar in a lot of ways, though. If you were comparing this to another game, what game would that be? It's certainly closer to Dark Souls than it is to a Hack 'n Slash title like Bayonetta or GOW 1-3.

Nah. I think he's on the mark. GoW can be more easily compared to Demon's Souls or Bloodborne rather than Devil May Cry or Bayo.

@X_CAPCOM_X: It’s still completely wrong. You people should stop comparing every single game that has combat with Bloodborne. God of War is much closer to Darksiders than it is to Bloodborne/Dark Souls which it has nothing to do with.

I don't compare every game with combat to Souls games. I was just stating that there are truths contained in his assessment. Essentially GoW combines dungeon/open world crawling of Castlevania SotN style games with Souls (and Darksiders-esque! good comparison) styled combat. Of course, it has its own unique twists and is completely non-formulaic. Good on the devs for that; it stays interesting.

God of War Combat Compared to Dark Souls by Director

If they were nothing alike, the game's director probably wouldn't be comparing them.

@PurpleMan5000: Thanks for that video. I think it drives home the points you made about it.

I forgot to add that the exploring component in GoW I think is highly influenced by Souls as well as parts of the combat.

They do have similarities. I think it's the enemies that behave differently and thus making the combat feel different.

I'm loving this experience! I don't want the old formula back. It feels like God of War has grown up in the edition from the previous games.

So far, I'm really loving the game as it is, this is the first time I actually like Kratos due to having/showing emotions this time around and he hardly had any in God of War 3. All in all, Santa Monica really work hard to revamping God of War series and not only that, I actually like the combat more so. BTW, kudos to CDPR & Ninja Theory contributing the game.

the new GoW is so cliche.

For example: Kratos meets a smith who has set up shop in the middle of nowhere (cliche alarm!). The smith says he can upgrade Kratos' magic axe (cliche alarm!), but only if Kratos does him a favour (cliche alarm!).

So, the game is cliche filled drivel. And what is not cliche, is just copied from other sources. Like the ice enemies which were copied from Game of Thrones.

The most unoriginal GoW game yet. For shame!
