Ghost of Tsushima's E3 debut analysed: a stunning late-gen showcase

As a swansong for the PlayStation 4, Ghost of Tsushima is shaping up beautifully. Many of the best, most memorable games come during a console's twilight years - the final stretch, where a developer's confidence with the hardware is at a peak. And that's the irony; PS4 Pro may be the console in the limelight here, but it doesn't come across as dated by any means. The standard PS4 isn't accounted for, but even so we're looking at results that feel fresh, and feed off a technical proficiency that's grown over the last five plus years. Rumours persist that Tsushima is a cross-gen game that may also appear on PlayStation 5, so it begs the question where Sucker Punch could take it. A Ryzen-powered 60fps experience with a further bump to resolution would look amazing, but what this demo proves conclusively is that the current-gen machines aren't likely to be left behind - Ghost of Tsushima looks stunning.

The way God of War and Ghost of Tsushima look has me wondering if we really need a new gen of consoles in the coming year.

Game looks great, although the writer seems oddly intent to cast the PS4 Pro as an aging system when it’s only been out for a year and a half. Anyway, a PS5 is still a ways off I imagine.

Probably the first time a game has visually wow'd me in a few years. Got technology and art direction working hand in hand, even an otherwise mundane tree has a samurai sitting under it with beautiful composition.

Even though it's a game lavished with detail, they are using hard-light to emphasis silhouette and it looks dam nice.

@SakusEnvoy: The PS1 was around for 6 years before the PS2 launched. The PS2 was around for 6 years before the PS3 launched. The PS3 was around for 7 years before the PS4 launched.

The PS4 launched in 2013, so we should see the PS5 either next year or in 2020. Either way, this game is going to be one of the last major PS4 exclusives.

@Planeforger: Agreed on the likelihood of a PS5 in 2020 (I’d cast next year as highly doubtful). We do have 2 confirmed next gen titles already in Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6, but neither of those are likely to come out before the end of 2020.

But I don’t think we should be *that* surprised that PS4 Pro games look good, since the system is relatively new even if it’s hobbled with a weak CPU and the need to be BC with the original PS4.

No longer impressive to me, this and LOU2 are PS4 Pro/PS5 only from the looks of things. There was no way it was anything like that on a base PS4.

I only played Infamous: Second Son recently and it still was visually impressive.

Not only is Ghost breathtaking from a technical point of view, I love how they nail the samurai atmosphere too. Taking cues from movies and other culture.

Will play in Japanese with English subs :P

2019 is going to be absolutely Texas. I have a gut feeling that this game will be one of the generation's crown jewels.

That's what I was gonna do. I need to play it in Japanese language with English subs since I always do that when watching Animes anyways :)

Also Ghost of Tsushima has that Witcher 3 vib going for, so this is a day one purchase.

They were one of the devs ahead in tech during the console launch. Great to see them back at it again, looking good so far.

This game looks amazing. I particularly loved the sword duel at the end there with all those leaves blowing around. I lost interest in the Infamous franchise so it’s great seeing this new game come out from them.

Yeah man I do the same with movies too: I always watch them in their original language with subs.

It's a shame so many Americans (but other nations too) like dubbing over subtitles. Subtitles are just fine.

Ghost is american made, but since the subject matter is Japanese it will just work better that way I believe.

Haven't bought many console games day one so far. But Ghost of Tsushima is a definite buy! Just need a release date now :p

i loved aragami. stealth and samurai work really well together.

the potential in a big budget, cinematic, open world, stealth / combat samurai game with the kind of graphics we saw at e3 is mouth watering

@Pedro: So if 30fps locked is great than 25 locked fps is good? 20fps is decent? 30fps locked is the bare minimum we require. Less than that is seen as undesirable.

Seems to be shining good enough from what I can see, can't really think of any open-world PC games look better than what is being shown.

30fps is passable and the bare minimum Not great by any means.

I'm hyped for Ghosts of Tshushima and not going to lie; I wasn't all that interested with Spiderman at first but the more I see videos about it the more I want to play it. Definitely plan on picking up Spiderman when it launches! I'm also hyped for Days Gone despite some of the negativity surrounding the game lately. I'm just a sucker for open world games; especially with zombies...lol.

This is just not knowing that there is a better alternative, and still being content. Moronic. I'd be on board if you spoke about exclusives, as it's the reason I still own consoles.

When I played uncharted 4, I wondered do we even need ps5? the game graphics is phenomenal! when Nate and crew found that big ass St. Dismas statue, I am confident its actually pre rendered and not real time in engine but it is!.

But yeah, 3rd party is not gonna go out of their way to really optimize for ps4, hence why ps5 will exist.

I never said anything about FPS. All I'm saying is it performs great for me. I was playing it on my PS4 pro all day yesterday and it felt fluid and snappy in combat, just like previous GOW titles, which is great to me ! Plus it looks fantastic. I'm playing it on performance mode and never once wondered if it was on 30 or 60fps. It just felt responsive i.e. great.

I play most of my games on PC so of course I aim for 60fps. When I play a game on 30fps on pc it just doesn't feel right.

I think you need to come back to reality mate. Aside from looking "photorealisic" in a few select screenshots, or drunko motion blur, the presentation is absolutely nowhere near Ghosts Of Tsushima. and this is coming from someone who predominantly games on PC.

The Witcher 3 doesn't look that good either in reality. Especially it's environments. You'll resort to spamming "hot spot" pictures, as above than actually showing raw gameplay as animation, physics, models, lighting, dof, scatter-effects, draw distance etc... are all pretty clearly ahead. The Witcher 3 looks downright bad in alot of places.

@R4gn4r0k: I play on performance mode also... I tried the other 30 fps ones and couldn't do it. It had a blur when I moved. Never cared for fps that much in previous games like HZD, but now that I can clearly see the difference, I'm always going with performance mode.

I have two gaming pcs and two gaming laptops...So keep dreaming your desire are every gamer's shit!!!

And if 30 fps is too much for you to bear, stick to pc and call it a day. But don't expect us to follow suit. Not that deluded!!!

I like pc for its versatility and diversity, certainly not like some here, for the UBER graphics and XXXfps crap.

It takes more than that to make a game appealing to me.

@R4gn4r0k: Funny that you bring up performance mode. I tried it and put it back to resolution mlde because frame rate was all over the place.

@Juub1990: Resolution mode was not doable for me: Turning the camera around felt really yanky and bad. On performance mode the game feels responsive and snappy.
