The PS3 cost $840 to make

http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/multimedia/display/20061117130000.html

The Xbox360 cost $715 to make:

http://www.joystiq.com/2005/12/28/xbox-360-costs-715-to-make/

Now imagine a $840 PS4 cost...today. It would be a MONSTER. Same for Xbone. What happened to these guys? Why did they turn into pathetic miserable cheapskates? The last gen machines raped any PC at launch...Today? The 9000 series from AMD and 800 from Nvidia will laugh at these cheap  weak machines. And its not that $1200+ PCs will walk over them. Its the sad fact that the cheap low/mid range PCs will run multiplats at same settings. It will be a sad day for consoles when $500 PCs will be the same (with cheaper games and free online).

And the icing one the cake is that while strong consoles lasted 8 years last gen whithout ridicule. This gen they will last 4 years tops.

I imagine they would sell them for 599-699$ if they had better specs.

For that money, people rather build PC or buy a new phone...

Also, better specs = more cooling and better power supply required.

And in the end of the day, the high-end PCs would still outdo them.

High end PCs outdoing them is not the issue. Mid specced PCs outdoing them and low end running at same setting at launch or like 6 months later is a pathetic level to which consoles have decended this gen.

I have news for you. You can build a $600.00 PC now that will stomp on both consoles. Yeah, MS and Sony cheeped out but MS really went low.

I wouldn't pay more than $400 for a console. That's why I waited for the PS3 price to drop before getting mine.

Hell, my GTX 670 still rapes the PS4 and that thing costs £195 now.

Shows how overpriced consoles are.

There are probably a lot of factors that went into the target hardware for these consoles this gen. Console makers generally don't make money off of the consoles, but recoup that through games, services, accessories, etc. Due to decline in revenue from new games (used game market eating large chunks), decline in first party accessories (so many fantastic 3rd party ones out there), high development costs and costs associated with exclusive studios. All of that comes into play, and probably made both companies less willing to build a "suepr box" and sell it for way cheaper than it costs to make. I would guess both are priced around what the hardware in the box costs to make.

Its also different this time with the highly customized hardware in each box. Specs on paper I think don't really translate here. Each company put money into customizing the hardware in the box and spent a lot on R&D, so that ate into the acceptable losses as well.

For me, I think its a clear sign of the decline of consoles. Like others I expect this to really be the last generation of consoles as we currently know it. I expect it to move towards streaming and cloud services, with the possibility that Valve brings the PC into the center of he living room with what they are doing with Steam box. The fact that the two next gen consoles are "weaker" comparitively to current PC tech compared to last gen I think is a factor of this. I don't think these consoles are expected to last 8 years. I'd put my money on 5ish.

Maybe I'm wrong (hopefully, would like to see my investment last longer than 5 years).

You can get a Radeon HD 7950 3GB 384-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 x16 Video Card from Newegg right now for $199.99.

If you have a decent PC already then welcome to next gen ownage for half the price of the PS4.  That and it's available now.

That's a 2.9 Teraflop card with plenty of head room for overclocking to push it even further.

I can't believe I waited all of this time for next gen and this is what we get.  It's a bunch of crap.

He already had a monitor, and a legal Windows OS can be found for pretty cheap if you know where to look. Also, unlike consoles, PC's can hook to pretty much any type of display. I use a 42" HDTV with my PC...

Sony is already losing money on the ps4, you expect them lose even more?
Or it would be the same as the ps3, and make it 600-700 euro at launch.

So much fuss over what amounts to so little money in the long run... If gaming is a passion of yours and something intrigues you then an extra 5%-30% more money for one product over another isn't that big a deal. "I can build ___ PC for $572.48 that will ANNIHILATE the next-gen consoles after rebate " So what, I'm not coupon clipping to save some minuscule amount of money. When PC gamers are building their rigs I would assume they get whatever parts they want not whatever parts are on the biggest rebate sale at Newegg...
