Today we're excited to announce that Microsoft Studios has acquired the rights to the “Gears of War” franchise from Epic Games, including rights to all existing and future games, entertainment experiences and merchandise. In addition, we are excited to announce that Black Tusk Studios in Vancouver, BC will take over development of the “Gears of War” franchise and that Rod Fergusson, former Director of Production at Epic Games on the “Gears of War” franchise, will join Microsoft and play a key studio leadership role at Black Tusk on the development of the franchise going forward. We had a chance to chat with Phil Spencer, Head of Microsoft Studios, Hanno Lemke, General Manager of Black Tusk Studios at Microsoft Studios, and Rod Fergusson about the big news.

Didn't even bother to rent the last game, so this is meaningless to me.

If Rod comes back to it, MAYBE the next gears of war won't suck. If they want the game to succeed though, they need to stop being stubborn and actually listen to the fanbase for once. Tying to casualize everything to appeal to the COD player will NOT work.

So are we ignoring Fable and Ryse which both are already confirmed on working on sequels?

Good, now Epic can concetrate on making better things than Gears of War.

MS does have a bunch of interesting exclusives lined up for the Xbone, but I'm sure that, same as with 360, the will fall back to nothing but gears/halo/forza for the rest of its lifetime...

maybe it's because both of those IPs suck and nobody cares about them.

The only good Fable was the 1st one.

Gears/Forza/Halo is no more a cycle than Infamous/Uncharted/God of War or Mario/Zelda/Metroid. Fna of those series want more games in them so long as they are good. As for a new IP, the tech demo at E3 wasn't a game, but nowhere has anyone said Black Tusk is only working on one game. Rare is working on more than one and so is Lionhead. I was a huge fan of Gears 1 and 3, with 2 being good but not great. This is great news to me.

Fable was average (at best) with Molyneux's involvement, without him total garbage, remind me the score of Fable Heroes again? Ryse did not even achieve fucking A status. Pretty poor franchises to to associate XB1 with.

@handssss: Well, thats only according too you guys.. Kinda double standard much, new kz (teh awesome), new gt (omfg), new uncharted (holy molly the best).. when its ms securing some of the more awesome titles its (dissapointing, milkage etc etc) if you ask me thats beyond pathetic and again this hatred towards an console.. i mean come on man, it is/was great games no matter how you spin it.

Many like/love these games, just because you think they suck, does'nt make it a fact dude. So get a grip , gears on ue4 and next gen is good news for xbox owners and gears fans.

Infamous and Uncharted were created last gen. Infamous only has 2 games released atm and the makers of Uncharted also made The Last of Us last gen. Sony also has plenty of other studios that make AAA titles. Many of which also created their own new IPs last gen. That's what is respectable about games on playstation systems. there is no single mascot or single flagship. Each gen a batch of new killer apps is created, and at the same time, some of the other much-loved IPs may be given a chance to continue.

Halo and Forza have been around since the original Xbox. We already have 6 Forza games and 6 Halo games (not counting the remake)

Gears Judgment was awful and ever since Gears 2, it's been apparent that the devs were trying to fight the fanbase every step of the way. This new game will only survive if this new team understands that and listens to the hardcore audience. They also need to deliver the content that fans want on the first fucking day of release. None of this excluding one of the most popular gametypes in the franchise until over a month after launch business.

@GrenadeLauncher: You are seriously one pathetic dude, unhealthy obsession you got there. Let's wait and see if crackdown isnt in development shall we? And still this is better, thought cows hated crackdown etc ? That double standard (ye ye single person. Just applying cows logic here)
